The Americans shoot themselves in the foot (metaphorically of course, they shoot their children in the chest and head). The indoctrinatiated belief is "The only thing to stop a bad guy is a good guy with a gun".
When you bring up the response to Martin Bryant all you get is "that's different it wouldn't work here".

They expelled them but they never expelled a senator that is child molester ( not charged but has admitted to it and on record apologising to the victim).
