Marshall's 4 concussions during 7 seasons at Port are as follows - don't know if he has had any in preseason;

1st in SANFL in 2017, when AFL were playing Rd 18 and he had Rd 19 off.

2nd in AFL Rd 13 2021, v Geelong, played 6:09 minutes, I posted news report in post #3798 - had 12 day break under AFL protocol, missed Rd 14.

3rd in AFL Rd 6 2023, v WCE, played 36:20 minutes - had 12 day break under AFL protocol, missed Rd 7.

4th in AFL Rd 9 2023, v North, played 27:08 minutes - will have 12 day break under AFL protocol and miss Rd 10.

In the review thread I mentioned head gear - but no one has responded in any way. Brad Ebert wore it just before retired. Does it work?

I'd call 4 known concussion incidents a worry.

Pretty sure it doesn't work although I'm not against if it helps a player's confidence.

Up the time a player spends out for concussion, increase list sizes and have multiple substitutions available during the game like soccer.
Watch everyone care more about concussion and do whatever they can to stop it in case they lose players for multiple weeks.

More importantly teach their players not to put their head in spots where it might cop a hit.

The AFL are an absolutely disgrace on this, they talk a lot but they have never seriously got their teeth into stopping players ducking into contact for a free.

I've long been an advocate that the NFL should stop wearing helmets because players are too gung ho and lead with the head something chronic. Similarly in aussie rules, stop paying any high contact as a free and make the free for forceful high contact only. Stop incentivising getting hit in the head.

NFL players for decades have been told by coaches to use their helments / heads as a weapon.

Weren't people dying everywhere pre helmets in the NFL?

Bassett on Todd Marshall’s concussion
“Todd's tracking along well. He'll get some extra testing, he's in concussion protocols so clearly he'll miss this week and will hopefully be okay in the near future, which hopefully for us will be pretty soon. We’ll leave it in the doctor’s hands and they'll make the decision that's right for Todd. We will give him some extra testing, as much for him as anything so he feels comfortable when he comes back that he's right to go.”

And don't get me started on seatbelts.

Having a seatbelt doesn't give people the confidence to plough their car into the car in front them repeatedly. NFL players lead with the head.

Weren't people dying everywhere pre helmets in the NFL?

Sure probably but they didn't know about concussions and there were no other rules to prevent injury because it was 80 years ago. They hit as hard in the rugby codes and people aren't dying left right and centre

I think that’s the last thing he needs is confidence to keep attacking with his head open the way he has the last 2 weeks.
Hopefully he and the club will work on it.

That's not what I mean, if a player feels more protected via head gear that's fine.
Yeah I know. I don’t think I want Todd feeling more protected though. He’s got to have some awareness.

The afl app is lying to me , thought it looked off . Bum league 😆
The AFL app stats tables have major issues. A few weeks ago it was saying we averaged 70 odd tackles a game (fine), from six games (fine), for a total of ~870 tackles (???).

I don't know how hard it is to port a bloody spreadsheet into a fancy table, but it shouldn't be that hard.

Great to see Marshall kick 5 goals on the weekend, after battling his multiple concussion problems as of late.

On top of the 5 goals, there was was sublime assists, couple of good marks and most importantly confidence in his overall approach.

Given all the talk around long term effects of concessions it wouldn't be hard for any player coming back from two recent knocks to be a little hesitant.

Nice form builder coming into dogs and cats before the bye.
