Strategy Draft assistance 2023 [Twomey: NMFC get #19 in 2023, x2 end of 1st rd picks in 2024, and x2 extra rookie list spots in 2024; no Sanders/#11]

I started this thread 2+ years ago if they don’t give us a legitimate priority pick this year they might as well say they don’t exist any more. No other team has won less games over a four year period than the current north team.

Yes, and we had our ability to attract players last year severely hurt at the worst time possible through Hawthorn leaking a sham report that resulted Clarkson facing no penalty.

AFL have to take that into account.

In our last 37 games we’ve lost 17 of them by 8 goals or more and 12 of them by 10 goals plus.

We are an absolute mess and are in desperate need of an assistance package.
Supporters and the wider AFL community have become conditioned to us being losers.
So the odd 16 goal belting here and there is okay.
Its okay if it was just this year.
Not the past 4 ****ing years.
We have been bottom 2 during Covid compromised drafts and had our number 1 pick leave the club on top of 4 different senior coaches.

Priority pick is a must.

I think currently pick 3 for McKay and 19 as a PP.

Give us 2,3,*16 & 19.
We wont get better than that. And if we can't work some magic with the above we may as well give up. Plenty of options with later forst rounders according to those around these parts.

*16-18 Poorts first.
With how WCE are playing here that could be 1, 2, 16, 19 to start with and end up 2, 5, 6, 16, 19 and a GWS player.

The problem is that the AFL is too slow to react, West Coast need help now, we did two years ago. If they make WC wait as long as we did their issues probably resolve themselves which is probably reason enough to scrap the priority picks altogether.
The automatic PP formula was more proactive. Rocketed hawks, tigers back up the ladder.

I can accept the timeline they have put us through but there has to be concrete triggers and relative compensation.

The previous system may have been too lenient time wise but no one would purposely put their club through the horror story we have endured.

The current draft system is worse than ever for developing clubs. There are a myriad of issues but foremost amongst these are:

  • Corruption of draft by constant NGA / academy / FS shenanigans
  • Additional teams pushing every selection out further and further - teams are finishing bottom four and they often are lucky to get two dips at the draft before the 40th best player at under 18 level
  • Cap minimums are too high. This one is squarely on the players and AFL who have pushed hard. Developing clubs should have massive free agency leverage, instead they have minimal

Yep. Almost all the biggest free agents and the sole salary dump have gone to reigning or recent premiers.

It's a big issue. There is just not enough leeway between the worst and best clubs to use their position to lure players. Teams like ours who have done nothing remotely of note for 4+ years should be able to plonk money in front of good players from other teams and have them falling over themselves to move because their clubs can't even begin to compete financially. That's not happening, or at least not often enough.

Leave aside our woes I personally am sick of watching a competition where a bunch of easybeats playing the best teams determine critical top 4 positions with a lopsided draw. Teams should have the leverage to move up the ladder within 1-2 years of rock bottom.

I’d rather push for pre selecting academy kids rather then pick 19.

16 and 19 will end up being 22 & 25 by the time you take in to account:

Himmelberg Compo
Walter (academy)
Read (Academy)
Rogers (Academy)
Croft (Father Son)
McCabe (Father Son)

Not all that flash really

Not flash at all unfortunately we don’t make the rules. Sheesh we’ve suffered through these last few drafts .

Hope that gets acknowledged

Can't compromise the first round or give North a helping hand but we can give the bulldogs the #1 pick after finishing 7th. We can also give the franchises a leg up every season. Nope, not North.
Collingwood, Brisbane, Bulldogs, and likely Brisbane next year, top three talents for ‘points’. Nothing to see here. And that’s just recently.

NGA rort. Academies should be GC Suns and GWS and only pick 30 or beyond.

Its an absolute joke that we can't draft Jed Walter this year. And we can't even access McKercher or Sanders after the 4 worst years in modern history, along with a number 1 pick ans (soon) McKay leaving us.
