Strategy Draft assistance 2023 [Twomey: NMFC get #19 in 2023, x2 end of 1st rd picks in 2024, and x2 extra rookie list spots in 2024; no Sanders/#11]

Can someone explain why gold coast have access to jed Walter? Didn't they scrap that access within first 20-40 picks?

NSW and Qld academies have different rules to the NGA’s.

Just list McKercher as an NGA, get the old AFL-brand liquid paper out and make him pre-listed as a North player.

It is no different to Walter waltzing into GCs squad for half a bag of peanuts or the other 50 times it has happened in the top 50 picks of the last ten drafts.

This would go a long way to solving the outside holes we have in our list and strengthen our draft hand by allowing us to target a small forward and multiple KPP talent.

Whatever assistance we receive will aim to strip the club of any freedom in how we use it. Instead streamline it into an elegant solution.

Everything the afl does is about optics . I’d say 95% of the footballing public would have no idea that Walter is a top 5 draft prospect. Similarly with the 2 tassie boys likely top 20 picks . If it’s the ‘look’ the afl are concerned about then instead of giving us a priority pick just give us access to these 2 tassie kids pre draft . No one outside of the footy nuffs like ourselves would have any idea of the assistance provided to the club

I just don’t get why we should be ok with much less than what other clubs have received just because we are North Melbourne.
We 100% should be getting a priority pick after our first, plus more.
We’ve won 6 games in 60+ or something. We need assistance. Done.
What we should get and what the AFL will give are two completely different things. We can make our case that we should get what GC got and our record is worse but only GC got early 1sts since 2016. Blues got nothing I believe. Lions an end of 1st round in 2016.
The AFL hierarchy don't want teams to go through full rebuilds as it takes to long to rise up the ladder. Gil has said this numerous times recently.
I'd expect the assistance to be very little, limited to extra list/rookie spots and/or picks to trade for mature players in 2nd and 3rd rounds.
Now whether they are consistent in applying that going forward is the question.

Hope you are wrong Chubbs. 2nd and 3rd round rubbish is not what we need. There is still an absolute dearth of class on our list.

If we lose McKay after losing judas the year before , we should be getting a PP at worse after our first rounder
Our recruiters are pox - since this rebuild has began what player have they picked from late rd or rookie draft.
Nga has been a wasteland except for a guy that thinks he’s a badass rapper
This is a club that has won 6 in 60 - it’s a joke this uneven terrain for certain clubs

It's always going to be tough for a side like North to get off the bottom of the ladder. If you compare to Adelaide, they got Rankine and Dawson (two of their best players) who just wanted to go back home.

If someone wants to go home to Melbourne then there is more competition. They will never pick us.

We end up with guys who are struggling to get a game or want a different role.

West Coast will get a sped up rebuild by good players wanting to go there. We never will.

We won't get that boost until we are already good.

This is taking away from Adelaide's astute drafting and list management. We went a billion deep on too many midfielders while they spread it around. Guys like Keays were available to everyone.

They made Dawson a bonafide midfielder. He didn't come across as a ready made midfield star.

I don't think that I was taking anything away from Adelaide, at all. I never said that they don't deserve success.

I was saying that we will never get that sort of boost (Dawson and Rankine) until we already get good.

West Coast will get a similar boost. We won't.

Agree on the dearth of class on the list but I'm not expecting any established club to get the GC package.
We may get more sympathy with the assistance package this year given how our season was derailed by the Hawks racism saga but I just can't see them "disrupting" the 1st round order with Tassie coming in as all the other clubs would object for sure.
I wish they were creative and gave us a 1st round PP that we have to trade, but as we see fit on players and/or picks, which may give us the ability to get multiple late 1sts or something to get more talent onto the list but I can't see it happening based on the messaging from AFL house and other clubs wouldn't agree to it.
