With Bonar back next week 1 of those 2 May miss out unfortunately.
The biggest the NMFC VFL side will have what happens if the VFL side make finals we could have 18 or 19 AFL ready and available which means a good number of quality top up players may miss out as I know Edwards won’t.
So Butler,Leinart,Free-if available,Downie and Sellers who I thought looked good today could miss out if the VFL side make finals which will be a real shame.
It will come down to listed players who qualify, also. I also see a bit in Sellers.

I’d be dropping spicer from our vfl team soon to make room for better players
If team balance comes into play Spicer Hansen and Edwards selections maybe the most difficult to make all 3 can’t play but at least 2 will in the same team the ones I will feel sorry for will be the top up players that don’t get a game.

Edwards being a KPP will help him stay in for structure

Happy to drop spicer tho as Hansen looks better and has the contract for next year. Spicer will be delisted in 2 months

A few others not mentioned:

  • Young deserves a game at the top level. He is just plain reliable and makes good decisions. Doesn’t get a stack of it, but you don’t see him get beaten all that often. Ziebell and L Mac keeping him out atm.
  • Perez has been another who has been good over the past few matches. Not as much footy today, but his disposal, pace and contested stuff was excellent. Had a brilliant third quarter.
  • Hall was very good today. Had at least 4 GAs, intercepted, contested well and used it well, besides 2 bad clangers.
  • Hansen had one of the better 8 disposal games you would see. Does a lot of the little things right. Growing in confidence with a couple nice runs and moves. Raw, but you can see a player there.
  • Laz clearly too good for this level. Likewise Howe.
  • Taylor was ok. Used it fairly well in tough conditions.
  • Goater was excellent on heavily managed minutes. Took 2-3 contested marks against larger opponents. Used his leap and pace really well today. Mostly played as a deeper defender on tall opponents.
Thanks for the report K4e.

Your comments on Young ring true from his form in 2022. Has he been down in form, or is this his consistent baseline, more or less? While he's far from spectacular the traits you mentioned are what he brought, and what he'd bring again, I'd have thought. I'd love to be a fly on the wall with match committee and list management discussions regarding him and Dawson. Bewildering.

From what I know, apparently Lachie didn’t have the best preseason, but his early form was comparable to last year. Some of his disposal and defensive efforts were slightly off though. I think he just has people in front of him.

He doesn’t accumulate quite like Ziebell or Sheezel, and his lockdown capacity is not as trusted as L Mac. Strange that he’s not getting a game ahead of Bergman, but I would say we are trying to pump development games into Bergman. Plus, I think he’s just vying for Ziebell and L Mac’s spots and L Mac isn’t getting dropped…

Like many of his vfl compatriots, his disposal and defensive efforts has steadily improved as the year has gone on.

That co-captaincy call...

internet seriously GIF

Forgive my ignorance, but Greenwood was allowed to play in the league team & the VFL?!

Yep. Not sure what restrictions apply for him while doing so but he was on limited minutes apparently.

I thought Lachie Young was developing really well over the previous two seasons. Stinks of a new coach not wanting to rock the boat too much that he has had no looks in over senior players like McDonald and Ziebell.

That’s not how I read it.

Reads to me more that the coach doesn’t see him as a long term proposition and therefore not worth dislodging a senior player who can play out the year in the 1’s and retire with more dignity. I reckon if we had Goater and another player ready to go a couple of our backline locks would have had the Cunnington treatment already. They still might before the year is out.

Leaving aside the merits of Spicer in the team or not… I think the forward lockdown and harassing pressure against the Crows showed why he was kept in the team for so long. We could literally carry two full time fast, aggressive pressure players in the team for the next 12-24 months until the whole team’s level improves and it would make the rest of them look better every single game.

Yeah spot on, it was obvious why he was in pre bye during the weekend's game.

Its almost worth sacrificing a player to the VFL just to have him just chasing and putting on some sort of pressure.

Pretty much and I hope we can get another like him up to speed ASAP - or trade them in - as we would be better for it. He may not be the solution but it is stark how much we need pressure on the carrier that our current setup just doesn't seem capable of providing. Another with pace and pressure around the back half would be ideal as well.
