Because it is a really poor way to run an organisation - and club boards aren't that sophisticated. A deliberate strategy is a lot less likely than some dickhead director or staffer wanting to big themselves up to a journo as being in the know. That is the driving factor behind Caro's career. Getting dickheads to spill their guts.

I'd move heaven and earth. I know it would be very difficult , but we've got cap space and a club in turmoil is likely to present some opportunity for poaching.

They seemed to be a tad stagnant despite the immense growth on their list, but I personally am not convinced any coach in the game right now will go up to the Gold Coast and get them firing into being a finals danger.
The club's culture as a whole, despite having improved a lot always appears hollow and malaise.

Thinking selfishly, I think Dew's sacking makes poaching their players less likely (those that haven’t already decided, most who leave have decided by now) - assuming they sign a strong, experienced coach as I expect ie. that they'll take the Essendon, St Kilda approach.
If they missed finals again and Dew stayed I could see some players being disillusioned and moving on. Similarly if they now sign an untried coach.

We - as a competition - need Gold Coast. Just like GWS. It is a 20+ year horizon. Leaving aside the Bears, who copped the Fitzroy benefit, these two are the first expansion teams in a non-footy region starting from scratch.
