Pointless playing Murphy if the Captain won't bowl him. I guess that has already been canvassed with Cummins and Murphy will see more some action.
If the next pitch they dish up is like the last three, even though they did vary in pace, he isn’t worth the spot.
Lyon is a different type of bowler on day 1 to 4 pitches, so his haul can’t really be compared.
A lot of this is also down to the batting style the pitches are curated for. I’d rather go the extra bat or all rounder.

Reckon he isn't worth the spot if its more of the same either. Boland probably goes for Haze, Green will probably come in, but I dont see how they get rid of Mitch, so that leaves Warner or Marnus. Can't see either of those going as much as I'd welcome, so Cummins will get his preference and Murphy gets it in the neck.

In: Green, Hazelwood
Out: Murphy, Boland.

I’d still like Warner to go, he’s been woeful for a long time.Give Renshaw or Harris a go.

England women win the first ODI to level points for the series, with two ODIs to go. It’s like we served for the match at 5-2 and now it’s 5-5. All close matches but - unlike the men - England really have all the momentum now after winning the last three in a row.

Over to the men and selection, what else does Michael Neser have to do? Should have played for Boland at Headingley, now they will probably bring Hazelwood back.

A year or so back, the selectors told Michael Neser he was a specialist in English conditions only and wouldn't be picked for any other tour, yet, here he is on the Australian tour of England and cannot get a game.
Not just that, but he's dominating in Country Cricket too. It's not like he was told he was an English specialist and then has struggled - he's been good with both bat and ball. They've obviously put a black line through him, because there's no other reason to explain his absence. I've been telling my mate he should have been picked for the first test - he would have outperformed both Hazlewood and Boland, as well as strengthening our tail. Likely another Cummins call, the same way that Murphy not bowling at all was a Cummins call.

I like Michael Neser, but for all the hype, he's taken fewer wickets in the county championship this season, at worse average and worse strike rate, than Nathan McAndrew.

Everyone salivating over a big hundred is the same as England picking Jonny Bairstow because he bats faster than Ben Foakes.

Has he done more in English conditions than Scott Boland? Deserved a spot. Likely academic now that Hazlewood is right to play again.

Michael Neser took only one wicket as Leicestershire racked up 6/451 in 90 overs last night.

Still picking him?

In a whopping 11 overs, he took 1/36. Hardly as poor as you make it sound by listing the entire team's score. They were obviously told not to bowl him into the ground, presumably because he's in contention for the next match.

Neser's overall record with the ball in the country championship division 2 this year is nothing special. He's taken one 5-fa. We're only talking about him because he's been good with the bat.

He averages 16 in tests, 23 in first class cricket, has hit 4 first class centuries including 2 this English Summer (averaging 81, with almost 500 runs - that's not one good innings only) and averages 26 with the ball this County year, including playing on some roads. He's previously been told he's an English specialist, and we're playing an away Ashes in England. Other than Cummins and Starc having sporadic good innings occasionally (with a lot of dross in-between), our bowlers have been ordinary in the Ashes so far.

Neser is busting down the door. I get why they haven't picked him (I disagree with it, but I get it), but to act like he's just a nothing playing who people are only calling for because he slogged a few runs is well wide of the mark. It feels at this stage like he has a black line through his name and won't ever be picked for Australia again, and it's difficult to figure out why.

His average in two tests, both with pink balls in Adelaide, is irrelevant to the conversation. Scott Boland came in with a ridiculous bowling average, too, and they've taken him apart. Despite Allan Border saying "Boland’s style of bowling and his general accuracy makes him the prototype English bowler. In those conditions Boland is just about first picked....If they start playing Bazball, his style of bowling will be very hard to get on top of."

Shitting on Mitchell Starc when he's taken at least two wickets in every bowling innings is a bit rich, too. 17 wickets at 26 in three matches of test cricket vs 20 wickets in six matches in county division 2?

I never thought they should have picked Boland in the first place. I would have gone with Cummins, Starc and Neser. It allows Starc to bat 9 and Cummins 10 (a very long batting order) and takes nothing away from the bowling.

Boland is not a swing bowler. His weapon is his accuracy and his ability to hit the top of off stump consistently, with a bit of nibble. The flat pitches have taken away from him, and he’s lost his ability to hit the top of off stump, and he’s been taken apart accordingly.

I didn’t shit on Starc either, I stated that Cummins and Starc, along with all our bowlers, have interspersed a lot of crap between the good spells. That is objectively true, not sure why you got worked up about that?

Interesting article saying that Warner has been been given more chances on less evidence than any other Australian batsman ever has, especially given his performances since the sandpaper thing, and wondering if it’s because Australian cricket feels they owe him for quietly taking most of the responsibility and consequences for that scandal.
