That's as bad as us losing to bulldogs in 2020 when GOV touches the bont goal and ARC ruled it a goal when 1 min later the reverse angle clearly showed a touched ball
From what I recall, they spent ages looking for a sliver of daylight between ball and post to confirm the goal; forgetting there was still 2 inches of padding before the ball crosses the goal line.

Goal umpire was right under it and called the decision straight away, so will give them the benefit of the doubt.

But, gee, on camera that looks like a goal.

Imagine having your season ended based on a decision like that...
I cant give him the Benefit of the doubt.

He completely ****ed up

Probably cost himself any shot of umpiring finals too.

Me right now..

Crows completely robbed of a win which would have given them a long awaited and thoroughly deserved finals berth in 2023.

Absolute debacle. Ramifications of that call are huge to the top 8.

I honestly don't see where the AFL can go from here.

Can't change the outcome of the game, even though they should... or swans will cry saying they still had 1 min left to win the game.

And they can't hide behind anything or say they back their umpires or that there's insufficient evidence or whatever else..... because it's straight up blatant. Everyone can see, this is a total howler. There's nohere to hide for the AFL. Nothing they can do to smooth this over.

All this with the umpire being SOOOO confident, that he chooses to completely ignore the review system they've built for situations such as this.

GOODNESS GRACIOUS ME. BIG NON DECISION THERE I RECKON DARCE.

Most controversial moment since....

I think it is hard to be critical of the goal umpire. He's made a tough call in the heat of the moment and got it wrong. I just had a look at the rules and I'm surprised that the field umpire was not able to call for a review there. That is the failing here in my mind. A lot of unnecessary reviews take place already because goal umpires don't have the confidence to make a call. I reckon the goal umpire here should be applauded for making a decision but a check comes in to allow a field umpire to call for a review or ARC automatically reviews ALL score decisions within a certain amount of time from the end of the game.

Yeah, on further inspection, agree that's a howler.

Mills smacks the padding with his hand and the umpire takes the noise as ball making contact when it is three feet away.

Closest it comes is at this point - still a clear gap between ball and post.

Wouldn't be happy if I were a Crows supporter.

Nah sorry, im pretty critical of the goal ump.

They call for a review for much less.

Very easy to be critical of the goal umpire. This is the exact reason you have a review system for decisions that can change the course of games and in this instance the season for three teams. Something like edge would have been absolutely perfect in this instance.

Why the umpire thought he didn't need to check that given the ramifications on the afl when there were players jumping and slapping the posts all around him is inexcusable.

May as well do away with goal umpires then.

I think the better solution is to encourage umpires to make decisions but make sure the processes behind them allow decisions to be reviewed as required.

Yep and the reverse angle that they didn't bother to check clearly showed touch ball . I have never been so angry at the end of a game . I know how the crows are feeling now

At least pundits can STFU about our big losses compromising the integrity of the competition, as it's pretty obvious the competition has no integrity anyway. Eddie McGuire might as well run out during the grand final and hit Zak Butters with a steel chair now. Who gives a shit?

No that's bs all he had to do was look at the central umpire and say I believe it hit the post but can you check

Apparently edge would be useless anyway here as Mills made contact with the padding and it struggles to discern ball contact when that happens.

What would have been handy, is a headcam on the goal umpire who was looking right at it.

My feeling is that had it gone to review it probably would have come back inconclusive because of cameras and angles stuck in the 20th century and then be deemed "umpires call", which would result in where we are anyway.

As has been argued for years, the review system is a gimmick that has been tacked on at the lowest price possible and is trash as a result.

Unless HQ actually invest in specialised cameras with higher framerates at multiple positions around goal, independent of those used for broadcasting, this issue will continue to go round and around to the frustration of everyone.

But he didn't believe it hit the post.

Think about it for a moment. You're employed to do a job. Something happens and you're required to make a decision. In the heat of the moment, you're not pausing to say 'hmm, maybe I should check this'. No, you're making the decision you're employed to make.

If he wasn't sure, I imagine he would have checked. But he was sure so he made the decision that he did.

Humans make mistakes sometimes. We have technology available to help with decision making when it is required. The check is in providing the field umpire the opportunity to review the goal umpire's decision, not saying to the goal umpire 'don't make a decision. Just check everything with us'.
