May as well do away with goal umpires then.

I think the better solution is to encourage umpires to make decisions but make sure the processes behind them allow decisions to be reviewed as required.
That is basically what the system currently is. The umpire makes their call and unless the technology can overturn the decision it remains with the umpire.

The process you are referring to is to go up for review when there is reasonable doubt.

This is a massive error from the umpire to not check this. I'm just glad this didn't happen to us

Apparently edge would be useless anyway here as Mills made contact with the padding and it struggles to discern ball contact when that happens.

What would have been handy, is a headcam on the goal umpire who was looking right at it.

My feeling is that had it gone to review it probably would have come back inconclusive because of cameras and angles stuck in the 20th century and then be deemed "umpires call", which would result in where we are anyway.

As has been argued for years, the review system is a gimmick that has been tacked on at the lowest price possible and is trash as a result.

Unless HQ actually invest in specialised cameras with higher framerates at multiple positions around goal, independent of those used for broadcasting, this issue will continue to go round and around to the frustration of everyone.
Well we will never know how useful edge would have been.

I for one would rather be a 100% sure that we cannot make a definitive call with all the currently in place resources and technology.

If it was us in Adelaide or GWS position, I could accept the umpires call, if I was 100% certain everything possible was being done to ensure the right decision was made.

If we aren't going to use the technology in situations like this there is no point to having it at all.

Goal umpire is on crack. On what planet is that lunatic 110% confident that the ball hit the post.

If he's going by the "sound" of someone hitting the pad with their hands or whatever it was... he needs to call for a review and make the call of behind.

For him to be so blatantly confident, yet so incorrect, is just laughable.

Then after that it's on the field umpires, or whatever other malaka in the chair to pump the breaks, get on the blower to the umpires via their earpiece and bring it back for a review as there's been a clear error. Letting the swans players quickly take a kick in and run off with it in the space of 3 seconds is a disaster.

Ricuito did very well to keep it together when he was interviewing the players after the game. Gee whiz. Crows would be doing a hell of a lot more than asking for a please explain from the VFL. If this had happened to Carlton, Gillon would've come out of retirement and already be holding a presser.

But he didn't believe it hit the post.

Think about it for a moment. You're employed to do a job. Something happens and you're required to make a decision. In the heat of the moment, you're not pausing to say 'hmm, maybe I should check this'. No, you're making the decision you're employed to make.

If he wasn't sure, I imagine he would have checked. But he was sure so he made the decision that he did.

Humans make mistakes sometimes. We have technology available to help with decision making when it is required. The check is in providing the field umpire the opportunity to review the goal umpire's decision, not saying to the goal umpire 'don't make a decision. Just check everything with us'.
Your word salad won't make me believe that hit the post and that umpire must be on drugs .

But they would have if the umpire didn't * up .

They’d still need other results going their way to make finals but the loss has killed any chance they might have had

Also directly affected the saints as now they need to beat brisbane to make finals as well

What’s the deal with having a hand on the post that is the one the ump says the ball hit? At what point is it interfering with the shot at goal?
ie using the post to get higher to touch the ball.

Using the post to get higher to touch the ball is directly agains the rules as is trying to sway, climb or move the post.

All goals are supposed to be checked upstairs during the break before the next ball up. It is a **** up on every level.

18.12 INTENTIONALLY SHAKING, CLIMBING OR OTHERWISE INTERFERING WITH A GOAL POST OR BEHIND POST 18.12.1 Free Kicks – Intentionally Shaking, Climbing or Otherwise Interfering with a Goal Post or Behind Post Unless Law 18.12.3 applies, a field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player or Official who intentionally shakes, climbs or otherwise interferes with a goal or behind post (either before or after a Player has disposed of the football).

If Saints lose they can still make finals if one of Sydney (v Melbourne) or Giants (v Carlton) or Bulldogs (v Geelong) also lose

If Adelaide had won they’d have needed 2 of those 3 teams to lose to make finals

If Sydney lose to Melbourne they’ll need one of Bulldogs or GWS to lose to make finals

True, but the lose that should have been a win does affect the calculation for other teams.

Oh wow, 4th Grade pie eating coke can holding stand in Goal Umpire would call that correctly.

AFL continuing to add layers of clown makeup to it's circus.

Yeah was probably a goal, but Crom had a heap of other chances to get in front in the last quarter that would've made Ballantyne mk2 moot.

This is James Polkinghorne all over again. No review on an Eagles goal in that game cost us top 4.

Retired North Melbourne great Jack Ziebell was involved in an incident last night outside The Osborne Bar in South Yarra.

He was coward punched in an unprovoked attack and is currently in hospital. He will likely need facial surgery. Details on #CrunchTime at 11am. @1116sen

There’s been some genuine howlers from umpires across the season. Last nights was the biggest and has without question impacted the result of a game

And last week we had the Jeremy Cameron goal after he received a hand pass a metre or more over the boundary line

The four umpire system hasn’t worked and it’s actually made things worse

Goal line technology is farcical

Shit like this happens when you’ve got one CEO doing a totally unnecessary farewell tour while his replacement ****s about in the background biding his time to fully take on the role. Meanwhile, Brad Scott leaves his post in the AFL to coach and nearly a year on hasn’t been replaced

Travis Auld has left. No replacement

There’s no CBA for next season and beyond still with the trade period just 2 months away. Clubs trying to get deals sorted for existing players or to attract players not knowing how much they can spend

The salary cap for this year hasn’t actually been formally set, it’s just an estimate with players to receive back pay once it’s determined

AFLW only received their fixture recently for a season that starts in 2 weeks. They also don’t have a pay deal finalised either

They’re a ****ing shambles at the moment
