7 news - Port fans complaining about flights prices to Brisbane skyrocketing in last few days... so what else is new? (the annual finals price gouging, not the Paer whinging lol)

Pretty clear example of supply and demand. Unless the airline is putting on extra flights, you now have more people wanting to go with no additional supply. Demand has increased. Of course prices are going to increase.

People didn’t want to buy the tickets for cheap when there was no event on, but now there’s a reason to be there, people expect the airline to offer at the same cheap prices?

Welcome to economics.

The opposing argument to this is…. if there was a long waiting list for Crows memberships, would you expect the club to triple the price of them?

I know for a fact Miami FC (whatever they’re called) increases prices for memberships and tickets when they signed Messi… but football memberships are a bit different, you could argue they have a social responsibility to their members/fans. I also don’t believe they are for-profit private companies.

Airlines are a private company that owe Port (or Crows) fans nothing. Their responsibility is their shareholders. They are offering a service. It’s why if you buy tickets 12 months out their cheap, buy the day before it’s more expensive as less tickets are now available. They don’t care if you’re going to watch the football, for business or to visit family.

Edit: airlines have some type of corporate responsibility (ie. flying Australians back during natural disasters, etc). But getting fans to a football game is pretty far outside that scope…

Duh… I’m well aware of the hows and why’s, the point being that it happens every year like clockwork. so why are people always surprised?

Thank Christ that spud Gryan Miers didn't make the squad despite the talk of his goal assists (and no goals)
Look I don’t even think he’s a bad player, but the argument for him to even be in the realm of making the squad was always ridiculous

Cringed every time he was compared to Aker

Everybody's example of a well run club the West Coast Eagles charges people to be on their waiting list and has the largest membership revenue. So yes I would expect an increase.

Yeah, I’m not disagreeing with you. Just weighing the business argument against the ethical one.

I think in an ideal world you’d be able to do it, but you’d think twice because the blowback might hurt you.

And I reckon there’s an argument to be made that there is no longer any fear of the blowback, that the pendulum has swing too far in favour of the corporation.

Makes you wonder what it'd cost to charter a plane
