Probably still a little short on points, although bare in mind the first bid drags the later picks in a bit, probably giving another 100-200 points. If Croft is bid on before Rogers that will help too for the same reason.

If North don't bid on Walter now (or even do it at 3) it's no problem. Come on North, don't be kents!

Hate to say it, but I think that, Walter aside, you're probably being a bit optimistic about where those bids will come in.

Hopefully our trade with North (#18 for F1) is a 'banking' deal that has us trading the pick back to someone the 'live' during the draft for the ~1000 points #18 would have been worth.

So if I have added up the point’s correctly we have 4131, with 70 and 73 next to useless.

Is this enough to match 4 bids? It feels short. Maybe the Chol pick gets us over the line
I imagine between Chol, Hollands, Sharp and our later picks coming in (those 60s/70s picks could well come into the 40s with all the bidding), we should be right. However, we can also watch what happens on the night and if all our bids come in early we can trade a future 2nd etc. for picks this year.

Also, I know its not the a-grader some thought we were bringing in, but turning essentially pick 4 into points for 3 x 1st round picks + Will Graham + 2 future 1sts while keeping our own future 1st is quite an incredible effort considering its Craig Cameron. Should have been ALOT worse based on history.

But now Cameron is really on the hot seat as there is no excuse (outside of us being the Suns) not to go all out on a star talent next year given the picks, cash, Dimma hand he has.

I worry about the Chol trade.

They have 32 and 53...one is too little, the other probably too much. Hopefully one of the players they're losing gets them something we can use, otherwise it'll probably be an F3?

Maybe we can push that a bit....32 & F3 for Chol & 37? It'd at least give us a few more points this year.

IMO it's going to be on Dimma.

Players will come if they see success as likely. Dimma has the reputation, if the team improves it will be enough to get some interested.

I may be an optimist, but I think there will be a number of players and managers watching us very closely next year to see how the playing group responds to Dimma and whether he can get us finally playing consistent football. Will be a very enticing proposition if we look like genuinely pushing around finals (11+ wins).

On paper we have just about everything in place to have a crack at players. Great young talent, IMO a very strong coaching group, elite kids coming in, salary cap, draft picks. Absolutely no more excuses.

I’m starting to get the feeling no trade for Hollands and Sharp will happen
I find it strange that neither have requested a trade yet.

I don't think the club wants Hollands out, and Dimma might not want Sharp out.

Hollands and Sharp might just back themselves with a new coach.

Sharp is a player that dimma would of got the absolute best out of, I really hope he stays, I hope Hollands does too
Realistically dimma made Jason Castagna a three time premiership player, who knows what he could do with those two

The other item I reckon Craig Cameron will look at will be either a trade of the kangas future first on draft night for the blues second rounders. Gives both clubs the required points.

just wanted to give a shout out to chris burgess. it might seem like a while ago now, but before he was lighting it up in the VFL goal kicking awards, his season 2021 where he filled in for the majority of the year in the ruck when witts was injured was a great effort (aside from the few games zac smith played).

hope he goes well at the crows, was a shame we could never find a spot for him to get some consistent games up forward to find his VFL form in the senior team.

Strangely, I turned into pessimist regarding playing finals in 2024.

Probably because we did not improve our list. If anything, we weakened our depth. It will take probably half year to imbed a new plan. I am not excited about some coaches (Miller, Kaesler, even King (some of his comments after games were ridiculous and IMO, our midfield, his responsibility, underperformed).

Then there is rest of competition constantly improving. Look at the teams that played finals. Are we going to replace some of them? Or teams with ambitions outside of top 8 like us? Sure, some teams will get hit by injuries but looking e.g., Swans who they are getting I just don't see us to jump too many teams.

I hope I am wrong.

Fair enough. The silver lining with sacking Dew when we did was that we‘ve already had 8 games trialling our new game plan, so we aren’t starting from scratch and should make it a much easier transition. I also think that Dimma’s best attribute is his willingness to trust his assistants. It was clear from watching the complete 180 in game plan once Dew left that our coaching staff were not on the same page and it was still very much Dew’s way or the highway, so our biggest improvement, if any, will come from Dimma, King, Grigg, and Drummond all working in unison.

The competition is as tight as ever and all it takes is a couple of weeks to make or break a season, but we could not have sh*t the bed any worse this year and were still (mathematically) in the running until late in the year. The expectation SHOULD be that we are better than St Kilda, Essendon, Geelong, Richmond, Fremantle next year which already takes us to 10th And from there, a bottom 6 draw should be a bonus.

Yeah, expectations are by most media that we should play finals.

Believe it or not I am re-watching all games and I was actually surprised that early in the season we did try to take games on often. But our horrible use of ball, bad decisions, bad turnovers, usually killed us.

It's easy to blame Dew for most things. He had his time and did not deliver. IMO, he was rightly sacked but I do put some responsibility on other coaches. They actually spend most time with players, train/teach them. Re-watching the games our skills, disposal is mostly terrible, we struggle under pressure. Not sure what Dew could do about it. We had long patches of opposition getting on top of us, unable to respond, adjust.

Personally, I hope most is mental and Dimma should be great in that area, instilling confidence, playing to strengths. Another year together should help too. We are entering a good age and experience profile. For sure, no excuse but some luck is needed.

Can season 2024 start already?

This is my concern. We had unbelievable luck with injuries, with a mostly fit best 22 for the majority of the 2023 season.

If we are hit with a big injury toll in 2024, we could be staring down the barrel of young depth options.
