If I'm Petty after than foot injury as well in taking that offer an running.
For sure wouldn't blame him at all.

Interesting that he knocked back the extension from us but we probably offered him about $200k less per year than Adelaide.

Yeah makes no real sense for him to extend. He comes back and kicks 55 goals he could get a million somewhere no problem

Take with a grain of salt and don’t shoot the messenger but saw a few things swirling on random fb groups that the Oliver saga isn’t over.

Apparently at Footscray hospital having a CT scan and x-ray. No details as to why.

Discharged and he is ok but reasons why is unknown.

Why are AFL players such homesick pussies i don't understand it? This happens maybe 0.001% of the time in American sports, not sure about soccer but i assume its the same. Like in the NBA you almost never hear a player ask for a trade to their home state team for family reasons. They ask for trades, usually because they want to team up with a superstar friend to win a title or because they want a bigger role or more money but almost never to go home for family reasons. I can think of 2 times its ever happened in the NBA in the past 15-20 years, Kahwi Leonard did it in choosing to go to the Clippers and is from California and Lebron did it in returning to the Cavs in Ohio but this was because he felt he owed the state and city a championship not for family reason and he left a couple yrs later.

So why is it so prevalent in AFL? I dont quite understand it. Most people in their 20s want to leave home and leave their home states to go explore other cities and other parts of the country and world, and we don't get paid 6 or 7 figures to do it. This might sound a bit weird but i respect Tom Scully (yes i know we all dislike him immensely and im with you there) leaving us for a huge bag of money more than LJ, Hogan, Scott Thompson & now potentially Petty acting like they're homesick puppies and need to run home to their mums. (though yes it sounds like Petty might be leaving for more money too though the fact he wont consider an extension means even if we offered him the same amount or more he wouldn't be interested)

Anyone have any theories on why its so prevalent in AFL and non-existent in other sports? Do you think its just that they're paid a lot more in other sports? I think the AFL needs to squash this, they are trying to make the rugby states stronger and that's why they have access to their academies, i know the players would never sign off on this but i think the AFL should look to get rid of free agency compensation and allow clubs to trade players without the players consent to stop this nonsense. You want a trade to SA but uve got 3 yrs to run, ok were sending you to QLD. As it stands, we have the Eagles potentially trading a franchise player and one of the most hyped no1s in memory because he's from VIC and they know he's a flight risk, North drafted a SA gun at 1 and lost him a yr later and now they find themselves gifted 5 free draft picks as a result. (could argue had they kept JHF they wouldve won a few more games this yr and not gotten such a ridiculous assistance package) Every yr the trade period is dominated by these home sick grown men asking to go home and its honestly just ridiculous for all involved. Freo have lost quarter of their starting lineup from a yr ago once Schultz leaves and yes they added LJ but it's just a bad look all round.

Like why would we draft Curtain at 6, prob a 30% chance he leaves back to WA. Clubs spend 4-6 yrs developing these kids and then lose them in their prime. JVR is the future? Or is he the future for WC? I dont trust a single one of our non Vic players to stay and this certainly isnt a Melb problem, this is a league problem so i dont think anyone can seriously say this is a bad look for Melbourne coz its happening to every club.

No one's assuming anything but you'd be silly to think picks 2 and 3 arent a way better chance than 12 17 30 and 35

To be specific to the current circumstances, given a choice between taking four picks at 6,11 in the 20s and in the 30s, or exchanging all those picks for 3 and 15 and only taking two picks, I'd prefer the former because I'd back us to a really good player with one of those picks and at least one other good senior player.

With just two picks even if one is 2 or 3 there's a pretty good chance one of the two is a bust and then you're relying on the other to be a superstar otherwise you've wasted a really good draft hand.

Different if we were in the market to get 2 and 3 but that's not happening.

When does Goodwin take leave? Feel like the bloke is running all over Melbourne having dinners and talking blokes back off the edge.

Yeah but that's where the argument ends, what If the club literally doesn't rate the talent later in the draft this year.

I reckon it is more of a money issue.

Adelaide allegedly offered him an average of $800k per year, with a million bucks being paid next season, and they were going to give him extra years too. That type of money would make him a top 5 paid player at the club which is good business if you are an injury prone fringe player.

He would be earning a fraction of that on his current deal. It is hard to say no to that sort of financial security, especially when you are coming off of an injury. He might be a complete gimp when he returns.

I wouldn't be in a rush to re-sign with a club that makes empty platitudes about being a required and untradeable player whilst refusing to re-negotiate the final two years of the deal. With all the recent departures it is not as if the club is constrained by the salary cap. Loyalty cuts both ways and the club is treating him like s**t.
If this is true then the club should indeed think about upping his pay and front end it this yr, not like were spending that money on anyone else, if theres some grand plan to bring someone else in then of course do that but if not you actually have to spend between the salary cap floor and the limit so we as well pay Petty and keep him semi happy ffs.

If the pull is genuine for Petty to go back to SA and we can manage to turn that into Harry McKay
The **** we want Harry McKay for?
We got plenty of dudes who can't kick a sausage from 5 metres directly in front.
