I think there's a desire to add players who can impact short term hence why many believe we are looking to trade up for a Reid or Duursma type.
Cant help but think if thats the case we'd have been better off just trading 27 and 35 for 18 and keeping 14. (yes i know nth now have that pick, but they did the deal like an hr before our deal so that was an option) Surely Wc or Nth wouldve preferred 6+14+18 rather than 6+11. Hell then we could've just gone to the draft with 3 top 20 picks and actually improved our list. For a team with apparently only 2 spots free we sure have a whole lot of list cloggers, not to mention we have 2-4 list spots free as Scythe94 pointed out yday, we can have 36-38 spots on our senior list and 2 picks takes us back to 36 after upgraded rookies, so we could actually have another 2 guys on our senior list and we certainly have the cap room unless we make a big move for someone which is seeming unlikely.

Before anyone points it out i know the club isn't done and im not melting im just critiquing the moves made like everyone else here.

If we think blokes at 27 are s**t then no way in hell we think blokes left at Rookie draft are better
We obviously think the guys at 10 to 20 are uncertain or not top end talent and we need to get right up to the pointy end of the draft. So we're using mid range picks in exchange for those to draft A grade talent. Then we might unearth some diamonds in the rough late or as rookies. It's surely not that hard to understand?

They got 10,14,20 and a future 1st. That’s 4

They can also get currency from Elliot Himmelberg to GWS
Forgot about the 10 deal but what part of 20 is first round? Especially after the 5 academy kids it's like 25.
They aren't giving us a future first either just give it up mate.

It's not linear. Maybe our recruiters think that after the top 20 that there's a group of 50-60 players that are all a similar chance to make it. Why bother picking one out of the herd at 27 when you can get a similar player in the rookie draft and instead use that pick 27 to get up the board and secure someone we really want, or who has shown to clearly be above the next group?

It's about getting the best value for the picks we have, based on all the data that the team has collected over 2+ years of scouting.

I was just going to say (and the above fits with my thoughts) that we probably know we’ll have to trade Petty next year which will hopefully give us a couple of first rounders or close to it.

Next year is a midfielders draft so if we can move up the order again we should be able to find a couple of good ones next year too.

Then we’ve also prepared the war chest for a Hail Mary contract to a free agent KPF.

If we were able to bring Hawkins in for a couple of years I bet we would have taken the Petty offer.

Twomey also said there's only probably gonna be about 40-50 kids taken. No point just grabbing s**t kids for the sake of it

Drafting is a probability game. Everyone pretends all the best players are in the top 10 every year and it never turns out to be true. When you take 4 picks across the top 35 you give yourself a much better chance of getting 2 really good players than just assuming you'll go 2 from 2 with top 15 picks.

Nothing to do with the coaches or club, he just wants to get back to SA at some stage.
Sure and that's fine, but he sounds like he's already thinking about home with 2 years to go on his contract. He only signed it 2 years ago.

Feeling home sick during a long term injury rehab is also quite normal. Hopefully he recovers well and starts kicking bags in 2024 and doesn't want to leave.

I don't want another LJ situation where all anyone talks about next year is Petty wanting to go home. It's so boring.

Which I'm fine with.

Staying at least one more year gives us time to A) hopefully contend again next year and B) prepare fully for his departure and find a great replacement

But what if the deal offered next year is way worse than this year?

No one's assuming anything but you'd be silly to think picks 2 and 3 arent a way better chance than 12 17 30 and 35

First round goes up to pick 21 currently. So yes 20 is a first round.

Collingwood first rounder doesn’t suddenly get classified into a second rounder just because a compo pick lands in front. It’s still counted as the first round.

Yeah you never know what might happen during the next year, he may even change his mind again, either way, best thing for the club if he stays at least for next year and apparently Petty isn't in a rush to get home but does want to.

Again. When 20 becomes 25 that's not a first rounder. I could give a stuff about technicality.

Goodwin talking everyone off the ledge makes for a dull trade period.

The fact Petty doesn’t want to discuss an extension beyond 2025 is telling.

Petty not considering an extension isn't a great vote of confidence in the club/coaches if true.

I reckon it is more of a money issue.

Adelaide allegedly offered him an average of $800k per year, with a million bucks being paid next season, and they were going to give him extra years too. That type of money would make him a top 5 paid player at the club which is good business if you are an injury prone fringe player.

He would be earning a fraction of that on his current deal. It is hard to say no to that sort of financial security, especially when you are coming off of an injury. He might be a complete gimp when he returns.

I wouldn't be in a rush to re-sign with a club that makes empty platitudes about being a required and untradeable player whilst refusing to re-negotiate the final two years of the deal. With all the recent departures it is not as if the club is constrained by the salary cap. Loyalty cuts both ways and the club is treating him like shit.

Considering we never really heard what Adelaide were actually offering I'm happy with this result.

If Petty turns into a gun forward next year his value will only go up even if he does request a trade again.

If I'm Petty after than foot injury as well in taking that offer an running.
