Player Watch Pick #5 (2018) - Connor Rozee (AFL Captain)

Rozee is an absolute thoroughbred.

Not a club in the AFL that wouldn't match our offer.

Maybe not my first choice as captain and that's just an experience thing but I'd back him in if that's the deal.

I've no doubt we would have offered Butters the same deal without the captaincy but Butters knocked it back.

Really excited with him as captain and no mention of co- captains.
But why does every single thread have to be ruined by Stinkley comments?
Can’t we just be happy for once?
That’s what people are wondering. Why does the club and its peons have to add him to every good news announcement.

I'm not a fan of the captaincy thing. They're trying to mould him and Butters into leadership roles which they probably aren't naturally suited to. I can only see downside risk to that - let's face it, they're hardly going to become better players with those roles simply because they're already close to maximum output.

I do acknowledge though that the cupboard is extremely bare on the leadership front and that the only other option is a guy who is a short time removed from being suspended for hosting a night of debauchery with Lil Pisty at the height of covid.

I think Rozee will be a more skilled version of Boak as captain. Good looks, speaks OK, good boy vibes, etc.

Lance Franklin and Alistair lynch both worked.

And of all the current long term contracts most of them seem to be working out fine: Petracca, Martin, Lynch, Whitfield, Coniglio, Greene, etc

Tom Boyd’s didn’t work out but then again he probably should’ve won a norm smith.

Grundy’s is the only big one that I can think of that was a 100% fail.

Sydney never won a flag with Franklin.. we all assumed they'd win plenty when he signed. I agree they won out in other ways though $

for real this is exciting, it's good to feel something positive. like others have said every club in the league would've offered this deal to get Rozee. and what a leadership group: "Fellow midfielder Zak Butters has been appointed vice-captain, while Sam Powell-Pepper, Dan Houston and Willem Drew form part of the broader leadership group."

A conservative choice for a conservative club.

He’s the homegrown poster boy with the big long-term contract, so there’s marketing value in him having the captaincy alongside that as well.

Love Connor, but Butters was the most obvious “next captain in-line” in our AFL history for mine. An absolute lay-down misere.
