Player Watch Pick #5 (2018) - Connor Rozee (AFL Captain)

I don't think the idea that Connor is just another vanilla yes-man is accurate, he doesn't display any of that to me. yes he has the clean look required to be an AFL posterboy but he also has the fire and I don't think there's any evidence to say Butters and JHF have more of that fire.
You want your skipper to lead by example, and for mine, Connor has the ability to grab a game by the scruff of the neck and say to his team mates, "Come with me boys." Excellent appointment.

I really love the captain and the leadership group.

Connor is that inspiration player from the midfield who can lead.
We have 1A in Butters who could've easily been the captain but sits as vice-captain.
And then three youngish guys in Powell-Pepper, Houston and Drew.

It shows the club is doubling down on the 2018 draft which is what I would do.

Great work by the club.

I'm also happy to not see Horne-Francis is there... yet.

you get the feeling Connor has bought the Ken Hinkley is God routine by the cultists down at Alberton. I doubt the cult would be making him captain unless he has sworn the oath to stand by Ken's side forever. Its sad really, this guy had potential but looks like he's a Boak 2.0.
I hear what you are saying but let’s reflect on when someone leaves your workplace and a newbie comes in as the replacement. It will be ‘Kenny who’ by the time Kenny is doing a left hand turn into Port Road from Brougham Place after being told to clean out his office.. All, and I mean all the players would have sworn an iron clad allegiance to the new coach at that moment.
Its what happens at all workplaces as ‘liking’ the incumbent and then his replacement could mean your own future success.
Please don’t worry about it.

Hard to split Rozee and Butters. I'm actually surprised we didn't appoint them as co-captains. Would've been on brand for Ken, seeing as though he loves to repeat his past mistakes...

That's a lot of CAPTAIN 1 action going on there for a club that shat on the idea a few years back

Good to see for a change

Well done Connor

Good appointment. So does that lock in Rozee's pay for eight years or does it get adjusted if the AFL signs bigger TV deals etc.

I reckon he'll go well as captain, certainly seems like the type of player that will lift when needed. Really like the rest of the leadership group too, so no failures there.

If only all the other nitwits weren't there pulling the strings

Imagine telling all this to TeeKray before Round 5, 2022.

Even Connor himself has admitted he thought he was about to be dropped, I'm sure he would've been as surprised as anyone if someone had told him 18 months later he'd be signing an 8 year deal and being named captain.

Full credit to him.

Deals aren't what they used to be. These days a club will do long term deals just to structure our payments. At the end of the day, if a player wants to leave, these days it happens, and if a club wants to trade a player it happens. A long term deal like this just means the club has some stake in what happens and it (currently) factors into what kind of deal needs to be done if he does leave. A long term big dollar deal says he's worth a lot to us.
This is the NBA model and players have no problems being traded when contracted. The only real risk is injuries and not seeing out the deal.

People need to chill on loading up every thread with the anti-hinkley bullshit. If you expect the new captain to be anything but supportive and positive about the coach you're a clown. If you're expecting that of any current players, You've got rocks in you're head. They'd all have their own private opinions and the last thing you want is players deciding it's open season on publicly deriding the coach. It's fine when we all agree he's a spud, but it's not a precedent you want to set.

I imagine Conner will be financially secure within a few years and it won't be that big a deal.

I remember someone saying something about the difference in how players managed or had their finances managed from when Brett Ebert retired and when Brad Ebert retired.

Nowdays they get very sound advice.

What I assume from this appointment being in December rather than the usual February captain call, is that Connor is a real leader around the club. Based on performances on the field, Butters 2023 was better than Rozee 2022 or 2023 and for runs on the board, Wines was the natural selection.

It must be what Connor does inside the club that meant he stood above all others. That he stood above all others so much that the appointment was brought forward 2 months, is a really good sign.

Why should we? The club whacks us in the face with the “players love Ken” stick at every opportunity, including today.

When the club is mired in mediocrity and won two finals in nine years, it’s condescending to keep hearing that shit and we’re entitled to get uppity about it.

It’s a performance based industry, nobody cares whether you’re mates with the coach or not.

Many of the current players give off vibes that they’re more than happy to plod along to unfulfilling, unsuccessful careers in order to preserve the status quo and the happy little insular boys club that’s been cultivated down at Alberton. That’s what we get pissed off about.
