Anyway, enough of the drug trade, back to the player trade.

I reckon that no matter what happens this year, at the very least we’re still short one proven tall forward, one proven small forward, and one proven tall defender.

Here's a non-exhaustive list of OOC and FA players who would be in our best 22 or thereabouts:

Mitchell Hinge
Hugh McCluggage (RFA)
Keidean Coleman
Caleb Marchbank (RFA)
Andrew McGrath (RFA)
Elijah Tsatas
Nathan O'Driscoll
Jack Henry (RFA)
Jack Bowes
Jake Kolodjashnij (UFA)
Tyson Stengle (UFA)
Zach Guthrie (RFA)
Ben King
Ben Ainsworth (RFA)
Ned Moyle
Harry Perryman (RFA)
Isaac Cumming (RFA)
Blake Hardwick (RFA)
Changkuoth Jiath
Jack Scrimshaw
James Blanck
Ed Langdon
Aliir Aliir
Jeremy Finlayson
Lachlan Jones
Todd Marshall (RFA)
Jack Ross
Liam Baker
Samson Ryan
Dan Butler
Jack Hayes
Josh Battle (RFA)
Errol Gulden
Liam Duggan (UFA)
Liam Ryan
Jamarra Ugle-Hagan
Tim English (RFA)

(I'm not including forward flankers, or anyone who plays exclusively on-ball, or anyone who will be 30 or over in 2025)

I think the categories of players who would immediately improve our side would be

Big fwd: JUH / King
Big def: Battle / Henry (both RFA)
Sml fwd: Ryan / Stengle (UFA) / Butler / Ainsworth (RFA)
Sml def: Hardwick (RFA... pushes McDonald out)

It will be nice if we can have a good enough season where we can plausibly attract some of these blokes.

Our biggest area of need is a small forward/s, we could also do with a super quick running defender.

Liam Ryan would be more than handy.

If Pink turns out to be quality, I agree trading in a KPD becomes less of an urgent priority. But it still remains to be seen whether Logue, Corr, Pink and Dawson is sufficient depth.

I don’t think it will be viable for a finals run to just rely on Larkey, CCJ and Maley either.

We’ve got so many holes and question marks, I mean look at the hbf Goater, Bergman, Fisher and Hardeman, I mean you could chuck Sheez or a couple of others in that lot, all have shown a positive signs but you couldn’t sit there and say there’s a guaranteed ten year player there yet.

I’d love another key forward but we’re already slow as an ox in the forward half, we’d need to really rethink having so many medium marking talls up there.

Argh bring on the pre-season

True.

But personally, I'm confident we'll be able to cobble together 2 or 3 blokes who can play as skillful running back-flankers to a finals standard out of those you mentioned, along with McKercher. (Sheezel has already proven himself to be one, albeit one we might prefer to play elsewhere)

When it comes to our KPFs or KPDs, I haven't reached that level of faith yet.

Yeah completely, it’s probably one of the hardest positions to play.
We’ve got a lot of players who could and will probably have a couple of locks by the end of the year but like this whole team at the moment, it’s up in the air.

The two players I’m most interested to see where they end up is Powell and Ford, those guys have so much talent just no best position yet.

I see Ford as a half forward, roaming anywhere between half back and deep forward. Powell is a centre man. Great hands and vision. Hopefully both their bodies hold up this year

I wouldn't say "no matter what" in the context of trades at the end of the year.

If Comben and Pink look decent this year then Logue, Corr, Comben, Pink, Dawson, Nyuon, Dawson is plenty of KPD depth.

There’s a hell of a lot of competition for that medium tall, off the top of my head we’re talking Zurhaar, TT, Curtis, Taylor, George, Dursma and Stephenson.
Ford is way to talented to leave out of the team but I recon a couple are in front of him.
Powell pretty much is in the same spot with midfield rotations.
I’ve got faith in Clarko to find a spot for them thou.

Only TT and CamZ should be picked before Ford off last seasons output

Yes they would be, but I think with Stengle going from a maybe player, to Geelong taking a chance on him and now being a premiership player that loyalty will stick fat, he was pretty much at the crossroads with his career. Ben Ainsworth, the ability is there but at the moment he's still inconsistent, had three really good games against Hawthorn, Carlton and Brisbane and some other games where he played well and at 25 going on 26 now is the time to go to another level for him.

Having said that I would be very surprised if he left Gold Coast now, the way they are improving and with Damien Hardwick at the helm and going through the tough years {a bit like us} and the faith of selecting him with their first pick in the 2016 draft {pick 4}, also worth remembering they lost another small forward not long ago {Izak Rankine}.

I feel Cam gets treated harshly. Would like him to improve his conversion, but his role in a s**t side is one tough gig. He walks into our best side, for many years to come. And that is 100% correct.

I am being harsh.

My expectations of him reflect the fact he's nicknamed 'The King of Marvel'. He's a power player and we'll need him to have huge impact if he's best 22.

Our senior players need to show the way for our youngsters. Show us the consistency required.

He just needs to start seasons strongly and stay somewhat consistent for the remainder. I’ll give any north player the benefit of the doubt in the last 5 years for dropping their heads with 6 or so games to go in this shit storm we’ve been in, but Cam, TT, LDU, Stephenson and Jy are all in this group in my opinion

Cam Z didn't exactly have the flashiest 2023 either. He'll have to prove himself to get a spot.
16 games out of 23. He never really got going. His highs were still super impressive. Bullocking through Maynard for a goal from 45, that massive mark (followed by a near miss from the square) against the Dogs, 4 snags against Essendons. Not worried about him given his talent and power, and especially given he supposedly looks in good nick

I think the problem with Cam is, sometimes he loses concentration and allows the defender to take uncontested intercept marks, or his man runs off him and sets up attacks up the field. I would expect a young player to be making these mistakes, but not someone who has been in the system as long as Cam has. Yes, he does the spectacular, but he can also let himself down by not doing the team things.

Cam's first four games had 7 goals and 77 possessions. Nearly 20 and 2. In one game he didn't score but he did have 26 possessions.

Had a shit gather round (9 and 0) and averaged 15 and 2 for the next 2 games. The 20 and none.

Then another 15 per game with 2.33 goals per game for 3 games.

So off those 11 games he kicked 18 goals and had an average of about 16.5/1.66 per game. He didn't score in three games but averaged 23 touches in two of those. One shit game at gather round.

His last 5 games averaged 15.? but he only kicked two goals.

So for once his start to the year was very good but he had a poor second half of the season. Partly cos he only played 5 of 11 games and iirc was probably carrying something for those last few games.

Since then he looks to have lost weight which indicates a greater commitment than any he's shown since he was drafted.

It's up to others to out perform him. He brings swagger and attitude.and the ability to kick multiple goals.

Agree 100% with this.

Was also tasked with playing upfield more to cover our serious lack of senior bodies in the middle which was out of his wheelhouse. Can he get better? I hope so. Is he in any danger for now - not even remotely.
