Tyler Sellers is a good player, but if we keep the list spot open for the MSD, then it could be anyone. It could even be Tyler Sellers, and you know how much we need KPF depth behind Larkey.
If we need KPF depth for Larkey then just sign Sellers now, no need to wait to the MSD.

Not sure how much it means, but he didn't look out of place in that match sim.

But I'm not really across the paperwork side of things. If we were going to take Sellers, would we needed to have submitted something that nominates him as an SSP candidate to AFL House beforehand?

Or is that only necessary for players you don't already have in your VFL program?

(I'm imagining it might be necessary for external prospects because of insurance and payroll?)

My thoughts exactly.

He is arguably the best player available, is young enough to have upside, fits a position of need, and you get the benefit of promoting a player from your own VFL team.

It makes too much sense, but I can't help but cynically wonder if the club's insistence on free list spots and not signing any Cat B rookies is cost motivated.

Even the argument of needing a selection in the MSD doesn't hold up very well with Thomas looking likely to miss the season.

Sellers nominated for the 2023 draft, which makes him eligible to be a SSP selection.

at some point the club is going to have create a pathway from the vfl to afl.

If you’ve got a bunch of players in the vfl team who believe they can make onto a list if they train and play hard, standards will improve immensely. You’ve also then got a recruiting tool for the vfl system.

Why is it cynical? The club is still run very lean in comparison with the largest clubs. We are not spending the full cap. And we are working very hard to establish alternative revenue sources to replace the Tasmanian money when they get their own team. I understand that this list spot is not so much an issue but it stands to reason that Cat B rookies are an expensive gamble and take a lot of development coaching. Probably not a great use of limited resources.

Your reasoning makes sense, but as a fan it's a little disheartening that we aren't capable of taking every possible advantage that's available to us. The AFL introduced the soft cap to level the playing field, yet we are still disadvantaged.

It's basically ancient history now, but Rhyan Mansell is the name that stands out to me as somebody who should have been listed as a Cat B rookie. I think had we pushed the AFL as we did with Ryley Sanders, then potentially Jack Callinan could have been listed this year. I don't think the investment in Gaelic or Basketball prospects is always worth it, but we definitely aren't taking full advantage of the new NGA rules.

How have we possibly not signed someone?

Key forward- Larkey and then nobody. Relying on CCJ is an absolute disaster.

Key back- Corr (injured) and then nobody.

Ruck- Xerri and then nobody who is ready.

Would be inept list management of epic proportions if we don’t use the spot available to bring in key position depth.

Edited- SELLERS PROMOTED! Great stuff.
