At the end of the day people are entitled to have opinions. We can just continue to be disappointed, either in those with little faith or our own football team. But I prefer this TBH. I think I would stress more knowing that everyone has tipped us to be a top 4 team.

Anyway the opener against a nearly full strength Geelong team at GMHBA will be revealing.
Look away now:

The Guardian has us finishing 4th.

Fourth – St Kilda

Ross Lyon squeezed every drop of ability out of the Saints last year, but the elimination final was an abrupt end – and a reality check.

It was sixth versus seventh but they were in different leagues. The Giants went into hyperdrive and St Kilda stood revealed.

The Saints are watertight down back, conceding less points than anyone last year, including the highly rated Melbourne and Collingwood backlines.

But it’s a pretty plain, one-paced midfield and Lyon knows it.

They were the 15th most potent team, which has been the story of his career.

Lyon didn’t have much to work with however, with Tim Membrey and Max King playing together just twice.

Now those two are fit and healthy he has an abundance of speed and good ball users off half back.

The second season is often a sweet spot for Lyon-coached teams, and he’ll be hoping this list can finally emerge from footy’s middle class.

Before the injuries leading in we might have been a chance, but with our tough early draw I am beginning to question if we can win enough games to play finals.
If we don't get any further injuries and the estimated returns on our current injury list are accurate then it's not that serious and we should be more or less full strength by round 2 or 3.

But those estimated returns are usually tripe, so who really knows.

For perspective , here's what the "experts" said going into 2023.

If there was a closest to the pin for where the Saints would finish, the prize goes to Purple at 13.
Doesn't say much for the standards of their guesswork though.

Probably the most positive predictor I've seen on us so far. It feels like if everything can fall into place at the same time there is a potential surge. It could be the opposite to last year where we set up early and hung on for dear life. This season we have a harder run in and a few players that we don't have as good cover for missing players. If we have a slow start I can see us doing what GWS did last year and coming home hard in the last 200 meters.

King, Steele, Membrey play a full season uninjured and we are a lot better off. Butler, Howard and Sinclair are the biggest losses with downgrade cover. The rest we can probably cover. Dow will be an interesting addition. I think he's a potential upgrade and development into the kids could go either way but new kids should also be pushing up.

They all underestimated the Ross Lyon factor..
I don't think that's the case , I think they know our midfield is average at best and that our key forward has trouble playing a full season due to injury and we are just a few injuries away from being a 10th - 12th team IMO

He's right about our forward line, i think we have to go back to Gehrig , Riewoldt, Hamil for it to have been that good, and we still have Hammer in waiting.
All we need is a Schneider, Milne, but we have Owens, and hopefully Collard turns into something special.

Didn’t really say anything but glad he’s ok and doing better

When you entertain those thoughts, he said enough. That he said if not for his wife he might not be here, take that to heart from someone that actually made a noose that that is a meaningful statement. Speaks volumes.

I hope that was off his own bat and not the club pushing it but what a legend to do the video anyway. It would have been traumatic to have to get in front of a camera and open up. He comes across as a shy, quiet reserved type and country boys get brought up learning to smash shit down and laugh away their problems.

That takes massive bravery and probably a million times tougher than anything he's ever done on a footy field. Great to see him n a good headspace. I reckon a fit and focussed Membrey might terrorise a few defences this season but even if not just good to see him back out there.
