Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach (Part 2) - Full Support of the Board

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

So Rachele on 9News tonight said he would ‘seek clarity from the coaches as to why he only had 2 x CBAs on the weekend’.

Is there so much of a disconnection that the players have to seek out the coaches for feedback? And surely this should have already been addressed by Monday?

Something stinks!
Also been managing an ankle niggle for several weeks, I truly hope they're not giving him the Crouch brothers treatment, jab, jab jab you'll be right mate type treatment that saw both boys miss a complete season of footy. In fairness that was probably filmed before the players had done their match reviews

It's because there's no real plan, at least long-term on how we're developing young guys. It's just get the win this week.

I've still seen no logical explanation for how we didn't extend Nicks at the end of 2023, waited the entire preseason with no movement, then a pitiful Round 1 loss was the clincher?

If we were sold on him, why the 6 month delay?

If we weren't sold on him, what was it about our 1.2 opening half that convinced us to pull the trigger?

It’s plausible that he had already been signed, as a few posters had said. My conspiracy theory is that they wanted to create media hype around ‘when will?’ and then issue one of those feel good vids of the players being told and it being described as a boost to our finals campaign.

The fact this is even spoken about by a player on TV tells me that Nicks has lost the players.

Surely he'd have had some feedback about midfield performance after the West Coast game? Had 14 CBAs for 13 disposals and 0 clearances, not too surprising that they looked to a different alternative option in the midfield next game. Definitely odd if that's a surprise to Rachele though.
in an elite sporting environment, that should have been clearly verbalised to him.

Well if I were a player, I would worried about his ability to be a decent strategic matchday coach.

There was a clear plan when Nicks played both Rachele and Soligo in the midfield for the first 8 weeks last year and he has continue with Soligo's development this year but not Rachele. You can argue he has prioritised Rankine yet he only played him in the 1st round in the midfield and then waited until the 5th round and Rachele still didn't get any midfield time during those rounds despite the report during the preseason was both will have more midfield.

I wonder how frustrating it must be to continually go back to a short, slow chip kicking gameplan and then have your coach come out and voice his frustration that the players "didn't play with their usual dare" after.

Yep, as soon as they extended him. There’s enough losses to sack him now, but it won’t happen. There’s no way they’re paying him out his extended years. He’s coaching next year unless there’s a player mutiny led by senior players.
So Adelaide finish 0-23 and have the worst season in AFL history and Nicks is still coaching in 2025? That's your honest view of a real thing that could have happened?

WTF.

2 issues with this, he doesn’t know why? WTF
Second a player would think it’s ok to be airing grievances on tv

I saw it and it didn’t come across as a grievance. He was just really spitballing about getting into the game to help out when he’s not getting his hands on the ball up forward. Glad he did it though, pretty embarrassing for the coaching group. Fancy going into a game with no idea that your CBA attendances had been all but eliminated. Fantastic stuff from the SuperCoach.

This might just be Rachele of course and I'm sure his form is playing a role, but that's a shocking interview that really does sound like a player who is not happy. A really bad look to be complaining in the media like that. That's not something we've seen a lot of with Nicks and definitely a bad sign for any coach.

Suggests that someone has lost the players if they feel the need to discuss publicly.

What’s the difference between 0-23 and 4-1-18? There’s no way the board sacks Nix after extending him this year. They’re already rolling out the excuses.

Well I don't think Nicks would survive either of those records, but I think there's a pretty big difference. One is a poor season finishing bottom 4, the other is historically awful. Particularly since these 4 wins include beating some good sides etc. But 12 losses in a row would be career ending for Nicks, given where the team is at now (not in 2020).

I think Nicks would survive maybe 3-4 more wins this season as long as the side is mostly competitive, but not a massive slide. Again though I think it's unlikely we'll get to test this as I can't see losing to Richmond etc. as a probable outcome.
