It literally blows my mind that Essendon haven't won a final in TWENTY YEARS...that's insane.
Since they've last won a final, we've:

-lost a GF then won a GF
-had two brownlow medallists that both left us at the end of 2007 as the club imploded
-finished last in 2010
-another brownlow in 2014
-lost another GF in 2015
-won a GF in 2018
-finished last in 2023

I'm still betting that from here we end up winning a final before the Bombers do

****ing Geelong and Hawthorn. Who is the last big 4 team? Is it Hawthorn or Richmond, assuming the tiges based on your 2/4 comment.
Man 2 of those teams have had 1 grand final in the last 30 years. Collingwood just increased theirs and Richmond have finally fallen of the cliff with the weight of all those cups.
The 'big 4' are Richmond, Collingwood, Carlton, & Essendon.

Blows my mind to still include Carlton and Essington though, they've both been irrelevant for 20+ years... Carlton's last flag was 30 years ago next year. I'd say most punters think of Geelong and Hawthorn as bigger clubs these days.

2/4 of the "big 4" hasn't done much forhalf a decade.
If pies hadn't won last year they would have like 1.
And then Richmond went the lets get a few now then just collapse like west coast.

Third place. A full game clear, nice and safe in the top four. Then this run home.

2-6.

Victories of 12 points and 1 point.

What a stain of a club. No finals, meaning another draft, meaning about 25% of Essendon’s team next year will have never been born when they last won a final.

Imagine getting a cushier travel schedule than the pies.
How do you even.
West coast have to have covid happen to not travel that many weeks in a row.

How does a team end up with 3 actual home games against interstate opposition in a row?

It's bad enough that they get these pretend away games at their home ground against co-tenants, but to get 3 actual home fixtures in a row against travelling opposition? At least try and hide the corruption...

Richmond

From 1983-2012 made finals twice (1995 & 2001) and got as far as the prelim both times
From 2013-2020 made finals each year bar 2016 but didn’t win a final until 2017 when they started their run if 3 flags in 4 years
Have made finals only once since (2022) when they lost in the first week

Essendon
Were pretty good until 2004 when they last won a final. Have made finals 6 times since without winning one
Last flag- 2000. Last GF - 2001

Carlton
Only made finals 5 times since 2001 (might be a sixth time this year). Last year was the only time they got past a semifinal into a prelim
Last flag - 1995. Last GF - 1999
Only St Kilda has a longer flag drought than Carlton

Credit to Collingwood who have been consistently successful with 3 flags from 7 grand finals in the AFL era

I started doing stats, but it was only off of memory and vibes.
Collingwood for consistency of GFs and maybe Richmond for some decent finals if not grannys, as well as a crazy peak.

Do you count both of Collingwoods GFs vs the Saints. 3 from 8? 😆

In fairness* they travelled a lot* at the start of the season.

Overall they have 6 whole trips away from Melbourne and 16 at home. The heart simply bleeds for them.

Did anyone realistically have Essendon making finals at the beginning of the year?

I know they started well and fell off, but outside the 8 is kinda where I expected them to be at the start of the year. A bit of a nothing list.
A very nothing list propped up by the powers that be in the media. They all get the Lakers bump - flick on ESPN and watch role players become stars as soon as the Lakers sign them.

Some absolute no hoper who is a fine enough option if your injury list builds up gets on the Bombers or Blues, and they’re suddenly a real weapon in their role and one of the underrated guns of the game. People waxing lyrical about the shape of their list, think pieces about how phenomenal Sam Draper is.

The Bombers list in Adelaide would be pegged for bottom 4, but it’s very enjoyable to watch a team that was second with a bottom four percentage and the softest draw in footy stumble at every conceivable hurdle like they’ve done for two decades now.

Speaking of preseason predictions:
Former Hawthorn sharpshooter Ben Dixon was bullish on Brad Scott’s team, tipping it to make the eight.

“From last year, having the hardest draw in the first half and withstanding that Brad was only in the chair for two minutes,” Dixon told foxfooty.com.au.

“Having that summer and a little bit more of Brad’s method, plus a few off-season inclusions, I think it’s really going to help them.

“I expect them to be a lot more consistent as opposed to dropping off in the second half of the year.”
Missed it by that much.

My Indonesian teacher in primary and high school loved that phrase.
My hear bleeds for you.
Hardly heard it before or since.
