Re: Dust settled. Next move re delistings and picks
If being a good Centre Half Back has anything to do with genetics then he's a certainty to do well there......he could be the next Glen Jakovich :D
There's no doubting they were one of the greatest teams in history but I don't think any team can make 7 GFs without a fair amount of luck. Here's a summary of each year and my opinion on whether or not I thought they got a bit lucky.....
That Hawthorn era probably began in 1982 when they...
I understand that the time to rebuild is now. However, that doesn't mean we are going to discard Scarlett, Chapman, Enright, Bartel, Kelly, Johnson etc now because we don't think they will be there for the next era of greatness. And while these guys are still there, we are still a premiership...
When I was originally typing this post, I was going to add another similarity between the Hawks of '91 and the Cats of '11. I thought for a moment that Hawks also lost their best midfielder to a new club entering the competition (D.Jarman to Adelaide) but then realised he didn't leave Hawthorn...
1990: Hawthorn miss the grand final for the first time in a number of years. The dynasty appears to be over. The great team is too old to compete with a young exciting Collingwood premiership side that looks set to start a dynasty of their own.
1991: The aging Hawks defy the experts by winning...
Re: Round 15 Team - Gillies To Debut
It took me a while to find the answer to this but it was in Round 1, 1997.... the day that our current oldest player Darren Milburn made his debut!
The other three players with 2 or less games experience were Paul Corrigan (0), Matthew Robbins (1) & Carl...
I remember him saying that he had a poster of Matthew Lloyd on his bedroom wall the year he got drafted to Geelong. Which was ironic cause he ended up playing on Lloyd in his first two senior games.
Thought I'd have a crack at trying to rank the current list in order from best to worst. Feel free to pick it to bits and tell me where you think I've got it horribly wrong.
I only included the players who have played senior games (minus Hunt & Egan due to long term injuries).
1. Gary Ablett...
I found this clip on youtube from early in 1984 where Drew Morphett says that Geelong now prefers to be called the Wildcats. If you watch the uninspiring football in the rest of the video then I'm sure you'll agree the name wasn't very fitting at the time...
Round 12, 1991 at Princes Park. Bairstow got 36 touches and kicked 6 goals in a 40 point win against the eventual premiers.
However, despite such a great game, the big news of the day was the return to football of Gary snr after he had walked away from football at the end of 1990. He played...
This is an extract from "The Gary Ablett Story" written by Ken Piesse in 1994:
...Greg Williams shifted interstate just over 12 months later when Geelong refused to add an extra $5000 to his contract demand - despite him having just won Geelong's best and fairest. Williams had been offered...
Re: This week marks 50 games for...
Coincidentally, Joel Selwood also plays his 50th game this week. I'd say he's had a fair bit to do with this amazing run. Has anyone ever had a more impressive first 50?
Hawthorn have definitely got the staggers. Such a shame too. I was really looking forward to seeing the Cats turn the tables against the Hawks in this years grand final. Oh well, I guess I'll have to settle for us beating the Saints in the big one while Hawthorn finish in the bottom half of the...
A weird similarity between father & son....both BOG in their 150th, both games played interstate, both in round 4!
Gary senior had 36 touches (27 kicks, 9 handballs), 8 marks, and kicked 5 goals 1 behind against West Coast at Subiaco in round 4, 1992. Not surprisingly got the 3 brownlow votes...
Nah, Kane Tenace would be a better option due to his superior defensive skills.
....but I'd still find a spot for Byrnes somewhere. Maybe drop Chappy and slot Byrnes into the forward line cause he's such a good goal kicker.
Haha, they just showed him as having 10 goals on Channel 7 news too!! It's the AFL website that has stuffed up though. For some reason they have doubled the totals for all Geelong players kicks, marks, tackles and goals for this week (see link below). This means that Stevie J has been...
As a supporter who has felt a lot of pain over the years, yesterday hurt me more than any other game ever has. I'm not even sure why. Maybe it was the fact we were overwhelming favourites. Deep down I probably thought we just had to turn up to win and was in complete shock when it became obvious...
The logical answer is Hodge, I think Max will play on him as a defensive forward....
...although I'd like to see him flatten Guerra at some stage....then bend down and rip his hairpiece off with his teeth and shake it in his mouth like a wild cat killing a small animal.
Q15 Row U
What an idiot I am...
I did all the hard work by lining up to get a 'queue' ticket then was so buggered when I got home that I slept through the alarm and missed my spot in the queue by 30 places! Oh well, should be happy I still got a ticket I suppose....plus I'm one row in front...
Why would you have three smallish players named as emergencies? I'm sure the whole idea of naming emergencies is so you have an appropriate replacement for anyone who might be injured at the last minute. What happens if Ottens, Blake, Mooney or Lonergan pull a hammy in the warm up? Wouldn't it...
Harley: 192cm 95kg
Scarlett: 192cm 95kg
Taylor: 193cm 91kg
Mackie: 192cm 84kg
Can somebody explain how Scarlett & Taylor (and sometimes Mackie) are big enough to play key positions but Harley isn't?
