Can anybody make any sense of the latest umpiring edict?

Your right - some decisions are confusing to the spectator. But why do they make such decisions? Fill in my umpire survey, if you've got a minute: http://opinio.online.swin.edu.au/s?s=AFL_Umpires_2010 I'm trying to get an understanding why many people think the umps aren't doing their best!!

    Paul Roos attitude??

Agree- Paul Roos is probably the best example of pl;ayers playing for their coach I can think of in the AFL right now - in the last quarter he knew the game was gone, and realises that tomorrow is another day!

    Are Collingwood really that good???

I would much rather we started kicking straight - as kicking points becomes a habit - a losing habit! Geelong 2008 GF!!

Umpires: The gods of AFL football

The first consideration should be protecting the playmaker, secondly giving them a real opportunity to move the ball on and then penalise the player (s) who hold the ball in. But it is still a raffle as soon as the ball hits the deck and a player takes possession.

    Attempting to fix the inconsistencies

Is the MRP trying to be too objective and technical - is there not more room for a justiufication system against the context of the play - rather than standardised offences that are categorised into a certain pidgeon hole eg when is a kneeing a trip or an accidental fall - it is not always just...

    The Darren Jolly Collingwood Crucifixion

I find it hard to know what the umpires are going to call when the blow for a throw-in or a bounce infringement. It seems Jolly doesn't either, if he keeps getting kicks against his tactics.

    Rules of the Umpires Forum

Umpiring is a product of the rules of the game, and some umpires do it very well week-in and week-out. Others have bad days. But professional/elite AFL umpires are accountable to more than just the players, eg bookies, clubs, supporters - and should get it right close to 100% of the time.

Minimising pack formations - Ball on the ground rule

The priority is to keep the game open - but picking out a dubious free kick to get the ball moving again doesn't seem fair - if they make decisions on technical indiscretions - then they need to be paid all day in every situation (but I would prefer to see frees paid only for obvious breaches of...

    Holding the ball - wtf?

HTB - should be about prior opportunity to keep the ball in play and moving - if a player does not get that opportunity, then it is a ball up. It seems some umps get carried away with the drama of calling HTB!

Hands in the Back means MORE TELEVISION COMMERCIALS

I am still confused about that rule - maybe if there isn't enough goals being kicked then the rule surfaces again - a bit cynical I know

    Umpires guessing

Umpires get tired during the game - this might affect their ability to think and respond as fast. Not an excuse, but a possible cause!

    Umpires guessing

If the umpire is sure it is a free kick then they need to call it. It sucks thaat often it happens right in front of goal - but they are the ones we remember!
  27. R

    Umpires guessing

Great point - if it is not definite it shouldn't be called!! It may annoy spectators who have a better view - but umpires Shouldn't guess
