I'm starting to get a little sick of the umpires guessing.

Don't guess, please. It's starting to effect games in a negative way.

The Lions a few weeks ago and just then Essendon were torched by obvious guesses. (Muston caught high, supposedly, and kicks a game changing goal after the siren at half time) there are more, but these were really costly.

There is no way the umpires saw the incidents in question, they're just guessing.

I'm not alone here, i'd prefer they missed something rather than guessing and completely torching people.

What game were you watching, essendon got a free ride all of the nite, the umpires were diabolical..........what about rioli being grabbed on the head and then his jumper pulled over his head, result essendon goal.......sheeesh

Essendon certainly got a raw deal last night. Hawthorn scored two crucial goals from dubious frees. But then again Hawthorn regularly win games thanks to questionable umpiring.

Yes, grabbing someone by their head results in their jumper being pulled up.

Lol. Last night was the best umpired game in a long time. Yes hawthorn got one or two got their way, but what about the 10 minute purple patch (last 5 mins of the 3rd and first of the last) which was all essendons.

It was the best umpired game in a long time. I didnt think Mustons was high, but on replay you do see him get a whack across the face.

Did one of you ring SEN last night? Finey put it best, you didnt notice the umpires, everything they paid was there, great game by them

There were a couple of bizarre free kicks paid but for the most part I agree with you. Didn't notice them that much at all.

And if anyone tries to claim that Hawthorn won the game or that we lost the game because of the umpires, you're wrong. This bloke called Buddy is to blame.

Good to see it only took 1 post for the point of the OP to be completely overlooked and the rest of the thread degenerate into a sook fest about which team got ripped off.

I completely agree with the OP. Unless the umps have a clear view of the incident they should keep the whistle away from their lips and STFU.

There is no way the umpire that penalised Black for a throw actually saw him throw the ball.

I'd rather see a few free kicks overlooked than have the umps pay them for what they think might have happened. So many umpiring stuff ups and controversial decisions could be completely avoided if only they let the game go until they were certain of an infringement.

Friday's game was pretty well umpired. I even heard Ray Ray apologise to a player about not paying a free " Sorry, I didn't see it and I'm not going to guess." As a player, I would have been ok with that. Go and watch the Carlton v Freo game and you will see the contrast. McLaren et al were disgraceful. McLaren couldn't see that a ball had bounced and he was only 5 metres away with full sight. They guessed on at 3 occassions that I can remember.

I would rather the umpires not guess and just pay the obvious ones. Has anybody else noticed that umpires styles often differ in the last qtr from the first 3? Is it the fact the umpires want to establish control in the first 3/4?

Re: Umpires Survey - how are they going

Greetings footy fans

I am researching the AFL umpires and our perceptions of their performance.

Would very much appreciate you taking a few minutes to complete this voluntary survey (link below). Rest assured your answers will remain completely anonymous.

Please feel free to pass it on to any friends and associates who might like to have their say!

By sook fest you mean fans of both teams saying "I thought it was well umpired"?

Great point - if it is not definite it shouldn't be called!! It may annoy spectators who have a better view - but umpires Shouldn't guess

If the umpire is sure it is a free kick then they need to call it. It sucks thaat often it happens right in front of goal - but they are the ones we remember!

Umpires get tired during the game - this might affect their ability to think and respond as fast. Not an excuse, but a possible cause!

Anyone else notice unusual things happening re fixtures , umpiring , mrp and the like since betting on games was more prevalent ?
Why is one of the sponors of the afl a betting agency ?

etc etc etc

pretty sure i heard jobe watson tell an umpire "dont guess" after he was done for a throw when he actually handballed

its pretty impossible for anyone to umpire and not make a mistake, in regards to the jobe one (and the simon black one) its not really a guess, it looks like a throw so they call it, but as these calls are getting highlighted as mistakes, umpires perceptions of what is a throw will change and they will correct them

If anything, big punters & the scrutiny that will come with that will put more pressure on the AFL to get the umpiring right.

I'm pretty sure I can remember a lot of times where Brownlow favourites have got a pretty easy run at the tribunal
