    AFL Player #37: Nic Martin

I feel the exact same way. Every time I read a post bemoaning of our lack of elite players (so every week) I think of Martin and what could be. Still reckon the sky is the limit.

Opinion Elite Potential on our List

Currently Elite: Merrett Near Elite: Langford/Martin Probably would be elite/near elite if they stopped getting injured: Ridley/Parish Too Inconsistent but can play at the level at times: Redman, McGrath Shown some signs but development to go: Caddy, Durham, Roberts Pure hope: Kako, Tsatas...

AFL Player #19: Kayle Gerreyn - Welcome to Essendon!

Watching his highlights and reading a few things his agility at ground level really does stand out, genuinely moves like a much smaller player. I love that he's got a solid size about him and that his kicking action looks pretty good Honestly he looks a bit like Draper with better kicking...

Opinion Has this Carlton list already peaked?

Their list demographic is what you want if you're going to win a flag in the next 2 years. They need to perform better but its not like they are too old. They would be counting on improved injury management to make up the difference between where they were this year and where they want to be...

AFL Player #16: Archie Perkins - Re-signed for two more years - 3/6

I know this year was poor for him but I still think there's a lot to work with. One thing he has is good disposal going inside forward 50. So yeah its a no brainer for me to move him back to half forward. He never really knew how to find the ball consistently in other roles. His strength through...

    Traded #25: Jake Stringer - 📦 Traded to GWS for Pick #53 - 16/10

Personally I hope we keep him for 1 year and then see where things are at at the end of next season. I don't think we'd get much in a trade for him given his age and off-field history (seems a bit of a beat up for the most part except for his poor training standards). I think the biggest issue...

    AFL Player #17: Todd Goldstein - re-signed for 2025 - 20/9

I'm happy with this personally. Gives us a 3rd AFL ready option in the ruck. Can keep teaching Vis and even Bryan/Draper probably learn plenty from him. Keeping him in mind Draper always misses games and I don't think Vis will be AFL ready next year. If we didn't have Goldstein we'd be...

    AFL Player # 7: Indefatigable Zach Merrett (c) - 5 time Crichton Medallist! 🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅

There's no way we'd trade Merrett so not even worth entertaining their offer. I think Merrett will probably be playing pretty good footy into his mid 30s. Probably only 1-2 years left of his absolute peak though.

    Traded #25: Jake Stringer - 📦 Traded to GWS for Pick #53 - 16/10

With Stringer I kinda think we already saw (this year) his best and most consistent season that are we likely to get for the remainder of his career. Finished just outside top 10 in the Coleman, was a pretty reliable contributor, played every game and averaged about 2 goals a game. That's...

    AFL Player #20: Peter Wright

I think there's still a handy player there. When you can kick at goal the way he does I think he's well worth persevering with. Yes his marking isn't the best but he's still capable of making the most out of few opportunities and he can help out in the ruck. He also demands a good opponent and...

AFL Player #35: Matt Guelfi - Re-signs on a 2 year deal! Teenage girl fans rejoyce - 30/8

He'd probably go well if we had some other more dangerous small forwards. As it stands though I'm not sure if he's exactly what we need but he's still better than our other options.

Coach Men's Senior Coach: Brad Scott

Personally I didn't mind what Scott did with all our best players (I still reckon Martin will have learned a heap playing in defense which will round him out as a player in future years which seems a worthwhile investment to me and he still played pretty good). He was unlucky with Parish and...

AFL Player # 9: Dylan Shiel - Sticking around for 2025, training in the backline - 18/10

I thought Shiel has had a good finish to the season but i would still trade him. He's good enough to be best 22 but he's getting on in years and he's only barely better than his replacements who are all much more likely to be part of our future. I also don't like the mix of Merrett, Parish and...

Does Izak Rankine have the highest natural talent in the AFL?

It depends on why they aren't elite. For example maybe the only thing holding them back was fitness. Dangerfield and Gary Ablett Jnr were a lot like that early in their careers. Clearly huge talents but limited to the forward line early on until they were able to build up a tank.

Essendon are now the one to watch out for - They can win the premiership

Its good to have a thread for Carlton fans to embrace our greatness. Long overdue.
  16. B

AFL Player #30: Nate Caddy - reunited with best mate Kako

He was excellent today- he's got great footy nous, he's brave and really hard at it, flies at everything. Leads with real intent. That said it does seem like perhaps his fitness isn't quite at AFL level week in week out. So I think we have to be realistic that he may need to still be rested...

AFL Toast RND 17: Win Against The Cold Pies

That was a fantastic win. I'd say most of our midfielders won their positions. Obviously special mention to Merrett who was absolutely first rate. Caldwell/Durham have been getting praise all year and they kept up their good performances. Shiel looked the best he has in years especially as the...

AFL Autopsy RND 16: Loss To The Pussies

You'd have to be a little sick to go watch that 3rd quarter again as an Essendon fan.

AFL Autopsy RND 16: Loss To The Pussies

That game really sucked. First got wrecked by the umpires in the 3rd quarter. Then completely dropped off a cliff in the 4th quarter and lost on merit. I'd want to see a really impressive response next week against Collingwood if I'm going to believe in any post H&A prospects.

    Preview Round 16: Essendon v Geelong - MCG - Country Game Apparently - Saturday 29th June - 7:30pm

I'm bemused at how they find excuses to let big name players out of every suspension. Think Butters, think Cripps when he won his brownlow etc. Oh well whatever - I'm not bothered that he'll be free to play us but yeah doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in the system. Once again they make rules...

AFL Player #13: Nik Cox - Subbed out vs GCS

I'm assuming his injury ain't too serious. On the bright side he's now sticking his marks which is incredibly important for him. The whole advantage of playing a 200cm guy on the wing is that he can mark over blokes that he's 10-20cm taller than. He's now starting to make that a reality. Still a...
  22. B

    AFL Player #22: Sam Durham

By the time Parish comes back he might be our 3rd best midfielder. Durham is just such a complete player and his power and speed to break away from stoppages is a major point of difference for us. He's the type of player that we've been talking about for years but haven't had. The way he...
  23. B

AFL Player #30: Nate Caddy - reunited with best mate Kako

Playing style wise I reckon he's a lot like Curnow from his build to the way he launches at the ball and tries to create goals from all sorts of different situations. Is surprisingly mobile at ground level and yet can still take a big grab. If he can stay fit and keep developing I can really see...

AFL Player # 2: Sam Draper - The mullet hath returneth - 22/6

I thought he was good today but lets see him back it up. Can't just play good footy now and then. Needs to actually achieve a level of consistency.
  25. B

Coach Men's Senior Coach: Brad Scott

Its really good to see those improvements. I'm just hoping that the numbers still stack up by the end of the H&A. I do reckon the extra 4 players we added last year will go a long way to helping us run out the entire season, simply by having substantially more depth than we had last year.
  26. B

    AFL Player #37: Nic Martin

I quite like the way we've been using him recently with him starting off half back and then when we need a momentum change we swing him up further on the ground. It also works well together with the flexibility we've been building with guys like Hind, Kelly etc. Its harder for opposition to deal...

AFL Player #30: Nate Caddy - reunited with best mate Kako

Key forwards rarely ever get much senior time in their first year. Normally most aren't even any good in year 2 (even amongst the very best they often put seasons together where they barely average over a goal). So its already a good sign that Caddy is putting himself in the conversation. So...
  28. B

AFL Player #16: Archie Perkins - Re-signed for two more years - 3/6

His impact with the ball is excellent but we need him to win more of the ball and defend a bit better consistently. I don't think he's what we need in a midfielder this year if we were to go deep into finals but he could become that player in time.
  29. B

AFL Autopsy RND 12: Loss To The Suns

I didn't think we were that bad. Suns have been tough to beat at home and we just didn't make the most of our opportunities and they stood up a bit better in some key moments. I thought our effort was pretty good for the most part and we did give ourselves chances. We were due for a loss at some...

AFL Player #16: Archie Perkins - Re-signed for two more years - 3/6

I'm yet to be convinced that he's best playing in the midfield. Seems like more of a forward to me. Think its worth trying but it may be another Langford/McGrath situation eventually. I don't think he'll get too long to start performing though. Our midfield depth whilst being strained by a rash...
