Been saying for a long time now that we lack anything imposing in the forward half. We desperately need a presence - someone with the focal qualities that draw the ball and make defenders question their positioning… and their existence.
If he’s seen Carey, Ablett, Lockett, Kernahan, Brown, Tredrea, Richardson, and even Modra and Capper if weekly speccies are classified as ‘contested’ , then it would be hard to squeeze Cloke in ahead of any of them.
We don’t. Hence why a said ‘unknown quantity’. However, there is no doubt he has the tools to be considered a ‘potential’ star in defence. We all know what’s working against him.
And if we’re presently talking best in their positions’, this is where players like Cox can’t be considered as being in the conversation for potentially reaching the heights of the elite in the competition. He has nowhere to fit and unless you can find a fit you will likely never get there. Adam...
Melissa is extremely unlucky to have to face off against ex-players being given an undeserved media platform. She is far more deserving of being able to continue her solid contribution toward digging our club out of the mire.
Sheeds genius was in his ability to regenerate and remain competitive. Not many coaches have regenerated like he did and he did it 3 times. Plus we were spoilt to play finals nearly every season up until 2004. He lost the regenerative mojo though when he decided to load up with other club’s...
Going by this, in my time we’ve possibly had;
3 Superstars who you could argue are legends - Hird, T Watson, S Madden
1 Superstar - Lloyd
4 Elite players - T Daniher, Fletcher, Salmon, Wanganeen
5 Great players who you could argue were elite - Long, Mercuri, Goddard, J Watson, Z Merrett...
Showing my age, but the first player I thought of when watching this was Tony Buhagiar who was a bit of a fan favourite/cult hero for his nuggety frame, roving ability, and goal sense. Is it too soon to nickname him The Budgie, out of deference for the original?
My memory of Hird in ‘92 was his marking ability at the time and his ability to drift across with superior judgement. His last 2 games that year were a nice little taster for what was to come but at that early point we all thought he was going to be an undersized key forward.
Zach Merrett is a new entry in that top 100 too. So at least I can say we’ve got a player worthy of being a linchpin for success.
Of my top 100 only 27 weren’t premiership players (Modra was a tad unlucky), including my top choice being Ablett sr and with Plugger not far behind. Both of those...
The team aspect is absolutely of the highest importance. But, as you have highlighted in a round about way, a good team needs elite stars to surround with a unit of cohesive teammates who just get the job done. But for the most part they still need the elite players. It’s not like those teams...
Glad you mentioned Fletch. He was a champion and an elite performer. And this thread is aimed at finding players like him as well as your Hirds and Lloyds. But I’m going even higher than Fletch in my expectations. Will any on our list be a game-changing stars of the comp?
I crave it and I...
Does anyone know why the board has the view that the proposed constitutional amendment to acknowledge the damage of pokie machines would reduce revenue and put the club at a ‘competitive disadvantage’ relative to the rest of the comp? Seems like a huge leap, and a deliberate misinterpretation of...
You’re thinking about the Lloyd who was winding down with a dodgy hamstring and being played out of position by Knights, whereas I’m thinking of peak Lloyd of the late 90s/early 2000s. I’m pretty sure you’re aware of the version we’d love to see at our club right now.
He’s also also kicked a goal from outside 50 on his left foot to seal the win that put the Hawks out of finals in 2009 in the Lloyd/Sewell game which made me sit up and take notice.
Hurley and Hooker both great players for our club, no doubt. Both AA backmen. A tier below the best of the best though. Hurley’s inability to mark consistently overhead due to scaphoid issues early in his career probably robbed us of him being the player he could’ve been. Him and Ryder were...
Team game or not you need those who elevate the team.
Lloyd is close to the best mark at full pace the game has ever seen. He’s also one of the best set shots we’ve seen. He could make goals out of nothing at ground level and brings others around him into the game. He’d have risen above the...
