A small defender with questionable skills who hasn’t gotten near the bests despite two relatively comfortable wins is not what you want a number 1 pick to be

Okey mete

We have 7 players (almost a third of those who’ve played) who have gotten votes from the coaches for being in the best at least 5 on the ground. He has none. He’s a good player but not currently performing at the level you would want from a number 1 pick. That’s ok, it kinda is what it is.

Number 1 pick means the best kid (broadly defined) in his draft, not that he’s going to be the best player on the ground every week at age 24 after playing out of his best position for a few years. Think less Judd and more Hodge.

My question would probably be around his pace/agility, actually. So far he’s been pretty durable but players who have pace tend to lose it and if they have nothing else then they also retire younger. By the time he’s a senior player ready to take the mantle as captain he’ll be about to start slowing down physically.

I think maybe they’ve done it all backwards, should’ve let him be a manic rebounding half-back and collect a few personal accolades that way, then taught him to fill gaps in the contest as he loses his pace and takes on more responsibility for the performance of the team as a whole…

I wonder if they watched the game?
I did and thought he was excellent. Not sure I’d have had him BOG, but has been great in both games. Small running defender is his position imo.

Liking his game across half back. His kicking can be questionable at times but defends well and gets better as the game goes on. Looks natural down there.

He‘s not in the top 100 which isn‘t great for a number draft pick
Need to move on from the pick.
Its now about fit in the side.
Lions have moved rayner to hbf and he's doing very well. Andy has been good-ish since going back.

Attacking is good, but should have focused on blanketing gresham tonight

His numbers might look good but the way the ball comes of his foot is terrible. Generally it’s a raffle if he hits a target. He might nail the short ones chipping it on the way out of 50 up the wings. But who wants him trying the risky one from a back pocket into the centre square to a bloke with not much room? Much prefer Massimo or Redman or Ridley

After that shocker kick in the first his kicking was superb he went at 83% and almost 400 metres gained
They were very safe kicks with not much penetration,

His work around the ball was sub par and some of his defensive efforts were laboured.

Compare his work to what we are seeing from a Collingwood or Sydney defence and you realise how far away we are.

He has never been a penetrating kick in terms of finding 50m targets though and we knew that when we drafted him. Short kicks cutting angles and overlapping runs and receives are his game.

There's nothing wrong with safe kicks if you're keeping possession. Andy's were mostly safe while still gaining ground.
