The audacity of this guy to call for the ball constantly knowing he'll just turn it over.

What does he provide? Defence is lacking, his offensive work is horrific. Unfortunately we're stuck with him. You don't really trade for small defenders and finding a good one in the draft is difficult. Just have to hope he can improve, but he's actually getting worse as his career develops.

Makes Jack watts look like a great #1 pick. This guy is Zaharakis trajectory without the single highlight to refer back to. Will play 200+ and never be much more than mediocre but this is Essington so his magnet is already Tarzan gripped onto the whiteboard.

That’s probably a bit harsh TBH.

Zaka was a second round pick so it is not really a great comparison and he did have a some really good years before falling off the cliff with a few years to go. But yes I get the point . You do not want your number 1 pick to be a handy back pocket.

His best (shutting down Cameron) and worse (last few weeks) are absolutely staggering.

Unfortunately, we get more of his average to worse a lot more than his best.

It's one thing to be a flop #1 pick but also our VC?
If we dropped Zach from the leadership group a few year's back, I think we should consider McGrath's future in the group next season.

I'd be looking at Zac, Redman, Rids, Langford and 1-2 younger guy's (like Draper) coming in.

Redman and Hobbs should be a walk up for leadership group.
Part of the issue at the club for a while has been atrocious choice of leaders. Pea hearts and fringe spuds are not going to drive standards and we’ve again put ourselves in a position where our leaders should be seriously looked at to be dropped. When you’ve got Joe D, Orazio, David Myers,, McGrath, Heppell etc as your leaders you’re kind of rudderless and can’t realistically expect to be competing with teams driven by Hodge, Selwood, Pendles, Gawn quality. Another massive own goal by Essington and it seems we’re happy to keep lining them up and drilling them home.

I think for me you want a leadership group member on each line who picks themselves so the group would be Merrett, Redman, Hobbs, Draper, Langford and I would add AMT to the group as the Senior indigenous player

Christ there are some overreactions in this thread.

Before the bye he would have been a top 3/4 two way defender in the comp. Yes, he's been disappointing since then, but is it any surprise that a small defender looks shit when there's sweet fa pressure up the field?

Overall he's still had a good season.

Football memory last three weeks, amigo.

The issue last night apart from his kicking was he rolled the dice too often and made some dumb decisions without the footy that saw him unable to get back the other way and defend. It is one thing to back yourself to push up the ground and try and make an option but there is no point pushing up the wing into an area that you end up in traffic and no chance of getting the ball. He did it 5 or 6 times and then had no chance of getting back to defend. Wasted energy running 80 meters sprints because you are out of position. He has to make better choices on when to go and where to run. Liked a lot of his attack yesterday but there was some seriously dumb stuff for an experienced player.

I like that he tried to use his run a lot today but his kicking was terrible.

He should look at Hind's game as to how to run and kick.

And this is a key Essington trait - too much of a difference between a senior players best and worst. I would be thinking this stems predominantly from poor culture. They really need a rocket up them. I reckon Dyson copped one behind closed doors as his physical attack was very poor earlier in the year but has improved a lot since.

He’s not what a supporter wants from a # 1 pick (the messiah) but he’s an ok footballer. He currently shouldn’t be a walk up start but when you’re VC you’re going to get more opportunity to turn your form around. Overall has had his best season in recent memory despite the last 1/4 of this season.
