For a team that watched a small Boomer for more than 400 games, I get confused why we even discuss physical limitations.

Yes well Boomer had elite endurance & pace. Now no one is expecting Jack to be the new Boomer, but I think questions need to be asked about any small fwd who averages 0.45 goals per game. He is not getting the job done currently.

Yes he's getting more of the ball up the ground but he doesn't seem to be able to play that small forward role at all.
When we're trying to build a side around fast n good baller users or if you prefer 60 plus metre players which is a Perez type for example. I personally struggle to see where Jack fits into our plan moving forward.

I have no issue if he can become that 25-30 per year goal kicker. I'd be over the moon, I just don't see it.
Time as they say will reveal all and just to reiterate any side bottom side desiring to climb the table should continue to churn its list.

not sure that tells the whole story - he averaged .3 goals in his first year, .5 in his second, and .8 this year, so it's open to interpretation that he is improving his scoreboard impact year on year (and, need it be said again, in a bottom 4 side)

the only question that needs to be asked is "what's his role?" and then once you get your answer; forward pressure, then mystery solved. his work produces goals whether he's the one personally kicking them or not. he spends a lot of time up the ground playing a link role along the wings when we're transitioning, i.e. too far out to score, getting involved in scoring chains, often being the one to extract the ball off the deck and give it to a runner. he's consistently getting to contests inside the 50 and applying pressure that makes it harder for the opposition to score on the rebound, which is how most score is generated in the modern game.

do you think you're like some kind of footy genius who can see something none of the coaches have noticed? like this "named as a forward = must kick goals" thing is some pearl of wisdom they've never considered? maybe there's things they see that you don't, things they're asking of him that you don't understand? maybe even things you don't understand about the modern game? it's baffling to me. this is the kind of logic that would lead to someone coming out after the 2015 elimination final and saying "yeah Trent Cotchin had a quiet one but Ben Jacobs only got 9 disposals, delist."

Look forward to something along the lines of "yeah, but what percentage of games after that did Jacobs play? Coaches must have agreed with me."

Papley was averaging 30 goals a year hitting his 3rd season it'd be a hell of a lift if Jack entered that territory.
They played finals every year and had a much more effective transition thing happening. Mahony has been building every year, Papley got a few moRE goals last year but before that he'd just stagnated.

I'm a Mahoney-lover, but I do agree he should be hitting the scoreboard more. And all it would take is converting the opportunities he already gets. Unfortunately for him, if he had an extra 10m on his leg he'd be a goal a game forward at a minimum. I hope he's working with a biomechanics coach on that front.

Good idea
Put him on the Rack
Lengthen his arms while they’re at it

Well Jack is so Crafty that he has been able to compensate for his lack of “penetration” by having the opposition land in his back after marking the ball and snaring a 50 for 2 of the 3 goals he has kicked this season. :stern look

Absolutely, his work rate is fantastic.

More importantly, he knows how to play, gets to the right spots at the right time. This is an invaluable commodity as it means he can read the game and make in game adjustments when the game dynamics change.

Honestly have no idea why people lose their mind about height and skills under pressure, there are a ton of players similar height with great game sense that make a decent career out of it.

Agree. Look at Caleb Daniel and Cyril Rioli. Identical attributes.

Had 8 tackles (second most on the ground). Kicked a goal. Wasn't all negative for Jack.

He's 20.
I thought he was close to a very good game. Competes and gets to the right spots. Will make the most of those chances more consistently.

I’ll say it again - him getting to the fall of the ball, being tackled and creating a stoppage in our F50 is a big win and important for team set-up.
I’m sure some see that as a loss and a slight on Mahony - but the coaches would be loving it.

you'd think after watching brisbane kick one billion goals against us on the rebound, people would learn to appreciate a guy who's always shutting those rebounds down by gumming up the works.

Yep he plays a solid role. Hitting the score board a tad more would make him a better player. Might come once all our mids are back and he doesn't have to work as hard

i don't disagree with you but a. he's 20 and b. he doesn't get enough credit for the good work he's already doing. i've spoken about this before but i feel compelled to over-praise him to compensate for the whipping boy treatment he gets.

Jack Mahony copping a bashing again.......he is 20 and has played 30 games.

Meanwhile Kayne Turner, has played 100 games and managed 5 disposals and 26 Fantasy points vs Sydney on the weekend.

You reckon you got the wrong person as the whipping boy?

Sheesh Johnny , this the Mahony thread the Turner thread is thataway. And Jack is a high fwd/pressure player.

Turner is a high back/ pressure fwd player two different beasts right there. Winnie Abraham wasn't either of those things, he unfortunately kicked the ball 50 plus metres either foot and soared like an Eagle. Was quick as well. Poor Winnie wasn't nearly as gifted as those mentioned.

Didn't see much defensive pressure out of Fruity either. All he did was time his runs perfectly past Carey and kick 3 goals every week.

Imagine what he could've been if he'd put the pace and goalkicking away and concentrated on forward pressure?

Yep how the heck we won flags is beyond me?
Ps- stop encouraging me lol

This thread certainly struggles to find equilibrium.

You have a crew of posters who just can't see the upside with Jack no matter what he does. That's not a criticism, everyone's entitled to an opinion.

Then a diametrically opposed crew who use some creative accounting to compare him to (IMO - yeh my opinion only) superior players in his position.

2006 Qualifying Final.

Brett Allison was stationed in our forward line to stop Geelong rebounding the ball.

What he should've been doing was applying forward pressure to stop the Geelong HBs generating run out of defence be drawing free kicks and making lunging tackles.

What he did instead was ignore his opponents and kick 7 goals.

Shows how far we've come in understanding player roles properly these days.
