As much as I detest the AFL and appreciate the emotional calls to arms from many for increased vigour around mental health it might be a bit unfair to pin this kind of tragedy on them.

Relationships, personal struggles and bleak times are a human condition. It’s right to seek to improve things but ultimately both players AND admin in the league are just ordinary people fumbling along like the rest of us.

Well said, KC. This is a horrible tragedy that has affected everybody involved in footy and much more besides. We on the NM bigfooty board don’t have sole copyright on compassion in this instance. This has touched everybody in much the same way as Phil Hughes. The best we can say is that, at least, Majak is still with us.

Not necessarily a town, but more a get back to basic hunter gatherer lifestyle for a while. Good advice imo
Or if thats not his style, backpacking around Europe can do wonders.

Mate of mine and his GF came back recently from Europe and had an entirely different mindset and pep in their step.

In regards to the AFL hiring full time psychologists, it’s probably easy to do in theory but how many players would actually go visit the psych on a voluntary basis?

The stigma around mental health still exists sadly.

I agree but with just one proviso: any AFL coach who conspires with the club psychologist to do opposition research should receive a lifetime ban, especially if that coach directs players to sledge opponents in a way that could conceivably impact their mental health.

But enough about grubby tactics of other clubs, this should be all about Maj. Get well big guy.

The coach might try, but I hope the Psychologist takes his/ her Hippocratic Oath seriously

Doctor/ patient confidentiality

I don't blame Majak's accident on them. I do find their attempt to be progressive preposterous and as backwards as they have ever been, however.

From what I've read in the past about full time Psychologists at sports clubs it's more about having that resource readily available and in your face on a day to day basis.

If you're constantly reminded its there for you, you're more likely to use it and lean on it.

Even a short survey regarding emotions and thoughts at the start/end of each week could help identify when someone is having issues and then the psychologist could pull them aside and try and speak with them.

Spot on. Lack of access to mental health care is a massive hurdle in the way for many people. First you’ve got to acknowledge the fact that you might need help, which is a huge first step for a lot of people. Then you have to find someone who deals with your particular issue, then get a referral, then make sure you can afford it, then make time for the appointments which are usually in work hours. Get through all that and you get to spend an hour talking about the worst things you’ve ever felt in your life and pay a shitload of money for the privilege. If you don’t click with your psychologist or can’t afford to keep seeing one it’s right back to the start.

Not to mention, severe depression makes you lethargic and unable to do basic shit like shower and eat. In the middle of a depressive episode the absolute last thing you want to do is shower, dress up, drive to a doctor’s office and interact with people. I’ve cancelled psychologist and psychiatrist appointments when I most desperately needed them because I legitimately could not get the energy to leave the bed, let alone the house.

There is nothing wrong with holding onto some hope that he will come back one day.
His injuries are very serious, however with good surgeons he cold be walking even running in 6 months, that ofcourse is taking into account that his injuries are hip and pevic related and no spinal damage.

Got nothing to lose so im gona keep hoping he makes a recovery to run out again some day.

Again wishing Majak a recovery to a life where he is aware of the support he has around him. Health is number one, and if he wishes to do a lap at a home game as I don't see him playing again. Could you imagine the overwhelming response and show of support, it would just as big as any game comeback.

I know many have differing opinions of how swatta is using this, but he is only trying to push the awareness of mental illness. He played the winning Grand final with similar suicidal thoughts in his head.

The AFL do not acknowledge it as a problem, players take time off, we have rounds for so many causes and illness but mental health can't be mentioned.

Majak here's to getting the medical help and strength to get you through the many operations and therapy ahead. And finally you have the time and people around you for support. I hope you get to see this thread to see the support around you.

On the topic of cost as well.

Its important for people to know that in most cases, if you're referred by your GP you're entitled to 10 sessions with a psychologist bulk billed on medicare.

If cost is something holding you back, speak to your GP, there may be something they can do

I read somewhere footy keeps him in straight and narrow. He will now have to face life without AFL football or a players income. It’s hard but it’s the truth and it’s a challenge he will need to face head on. Won’t be easy at all.
If the club doesn't look after him for life I'll be absolutely shocked, wether he stays with North in some capacity or not, he's one of us forever.

If it was part of every players contract then the stigma side would be less of a thing. not because its any easier but if everyone sees the psyche then no one is necessarily seeing them because they are bonkers/soft or whatever else people might say.

I suspect thats also part of what is driving Swatta.

Having experienced that attitude in no uncertain terms at north (and across the league) 20 years ago i imagine it would leave an impression and be motivating.

Exactly, and hoping for more players to seek help.

Must admit I am having trouble getting my head around all of this.

I suspect we all are hilly. I feel like I’ve been in a trance like emotional vacuum ever since I first heard of this. I doubt I’ll ever get my head around it so my only thought on the matter is hoping like hell Maj heals both physically and mentally and that he gets to experience the joys of life which await him, such as welcoming your first child into the world and henceforth seeing the world from a far brighter perspective, knowing you have a purpose beyond yourself which is very much worth living for.

Great work Filthy.
