Scummy ****s.

We have been absolutely open to these f***s and then we ask for one modicum of privacy for one of our blokes and they do this shit.

IMHO a tweet from Heath is not enough Buckley should call another press conference and tear the ****s apart.

This frustrates me for a number of reasons.

This is as serious as it gets. North respectfully asked for them to give Majak and his family the privacy and space they deserve two times prior to this and it’s still going. It’s trash journalism at its finest.

We’ve revolutionised footy media access and this is how we’re repaid? Cut them off next year.

As someone who struggles with depression and anxiety on a daily basis, it makes me angry. We say we care about mental health and implore people to come forward to discuss their struggles but then we report this stuff? Why would you bother. Especially as a high profile person.

I may be reading too much into this but Simonis is listed as a crime reporter for the Hun

Is she junior? Blame the papers imo. They’d be making them do the stories. A senior journalist can say no but I can see them telling a someone trying to make it in the industry they have to do the story.

As for doing live crosses from the hospital, that shit is grubby as it gets.

Aneeka Simonis is the journo responsible

Media are reportedly doing live crosses from outside Maj's hospital
That’s disgusting. I can’t imagine how angry everyone involved would be, including the medical staff involved in Majak’s care, who would understand the importance of privacy and the need to give people space to recover.

Perhaps the “friends” quoted in these articles need to actually consider Majak’s best interests and not give out quotes to journalists. “No comment” is the respectful approach here.

WTF ban the journo's out there. Someone go get a pick of them and paste it over social media, so we can see what these low life's look like

From what I've read in the past about full time Psychologists at sports clubs it's more about having that resource readily available and in your face on a day to day basis.

If you're constantly reminded its there for you, you're more likely to use it and lean on it.

Even a short survey regarding emotions and thoughts at the start/end of each week could help identify when someone is having issues and then the psychologist could pull them aside and try and speak with them.

If clubs have full time psychologists, it should be part and parcel of training that each player (and coach) has an allotted time slot for a one on one, just as they do for gym sessions, skills, goal kicking practice etc. That removes any sort of stigma, and makes it a totally normal thing to do removing the onus of people to put their hand up to seek help.

I feel there a tenuous similarities with Jason McCartney's situation post Bali. I say tenuous because nobody yet knows the extent of Maj's physical injuries but I would assume it would be fairly likely to attach the words career threatening.

Anyway, your club could not have handled McCartney's situation any better at the time and I'm sure they will step up to the plate now.

I've said it before that McCartney's comeback is just about my favourite football moment of all time, even above many of my own clubs achievements.
I look forward to seeing North and Majak writing another chapter in the history books. :praying:
Awesome perspective mate, thanks for sharing! You are absolutely right we will come out the other side of this as a club and a community.

The afl? If the afl make it mandatory it’s on them to pick up the bill
Of course. That's exactly what I said. Just that if they are they will look for funding to support it and highlight "see we are good people!!! see!!!"

As much as I detest the AFL and appreciate the emotional calls to arms from many for increased vigour around mental health it might be a bit unfair to pin this kind of tragedy on them.

Relationships, personal struggles and bleak times are a human condition. It’s right to seek to improve things but ultimately both players AND admin in the league are just ordinary people fumbling along like the rest of us.
People that pin it on the AFL are going a bit overboard, but I think the onus is on them now to do whatever they can to get ahead. The questions have been asked for a while now and I think now is the time.

In regards to the AFL hiring full time psychologists, it’s probably easy to do in theory but how many players would actually go visit the psych on a voluntary basis?

The stigma around mental health still exists sadly.
Which is why you book them in for mandatory meetings once a fortnight.

Exactly. There doesn't need to be anything wrong. Could just be a simple Likert scale to get them thinking at least or asking how they felt after the game / social media etc. Just opening up and a player may find an underlying issue.

I think a mandatory meeting once a fortnight with an open door policy for a few hours here and there for drop-ins or even just a 10-min chat.

Exactly. What are they going to do...write bad stuff about North next year? I don't think it could get any worse so who cares. Majak first.

It is pretty shitful, but it is how it is these days.

Rest assured the poor bugger won't get any peace from them when he gets out. Like Cousins, they'll hound him to his grave if required.

Recall what that fat drunk Essendon supporting prick Robinson said about Fasolo.

I've enjoyed (for want of a better word) all of the posts in this thread. Must admit I am having trouble getting my head around all of this.

My son and I were mucking around this morning with a ball and he threw it to me and I instinctively went" Majjaaaaakkkk!". Took me a couple of seconds to regain composure after thinking I may never feel that feeling again and why that would be so.

What did you say?

I can’t remember and I can’t find the tweet. Think it was something about how hard it is for someone to say they need help. Probably called him a w***er or something too. There was another time when I had a crack at him for predicting which coach was going to be sacked first. Either way, I’m blocked. Dudes blocked more people then Mutombo

Who was the writer attributed to that piece, gr? We should be naming and shaming, even considering a club boycott of journos or publications that pull this kind of shit after explicitly being asked to respect the man's privacy.

Cannot believe that, who the hell reports that shit. I can't see who the original article was written by.

From recent chats, it seems the South Sudanese community is struggling to come to terms with the mental health aspect to this too. There is a lot of anger and frustration that Maj is being discussed so publicly as someone with mental health problems. The stigma towards mental health in this case also involves perceptions that Maj's image and that of the community is being hurt by this public discourse.

My friend was saying Maj and the family should be given the same privacy that other players have been given. There is a sense that his situation is being treated differently. There's a lot of cultural baggage at play that takes this beyond issues of mental illness in the AFL.
