North Melbourne opened two list vacancies for the mid-season draft, moving injured youngster Miller Bergman to its inactive list before veteran recruit Tom Lynch announced his playing retirement on the eve of the list lodgement deadline.

It meant that star midfielder Ben Cunnington remains eligible to potentially return to football this season, as he continues his recovery from a secondary testicular cancer diagnosis last July.


But the club will give Cunnington all the time he needs to progress from the diagnosis and resulting surgery, saying there remains no timeline on when the two-time best and fairest may return.


"No update," McPherson said.


"Nothing has really changed. He's just progressing along. If he gets to a stage where he's feeling able and ready to play, we'll absolutely go for it. But there is absolutely no pressure on him."


Cunnington has long been one of North Melbourne's most important players, particularly in a young and developing midfield group, with his absence keenly felt throughout the side's disappointing 1-11 start to the year.


But the Kangaroos aren't reflecting on just how big his loss to the team has been, saying they're focused on progressing with a promising crop of youngsters that includes Jy Simpkin, Jason Horne-Francis and Tarryn Thomas.


"It's probably better coming from other people saying that than us, because we don't want to sound like we're making excuses. But the reality is he's a jet of the competition," McPherson said.


"Obviously, he's been missing since the late part of last year and then the whole way through this season. He's exactly what we need in the middle of the ground. We've seen the impact that Jed (Anderson) has had since he came back into the team, just with his hardness around the ball and his maturity and his leadership.


"If you can chuck Ben back in there, he absolutely helps us."

NORTH Melbourne will use the next three weeks to decide on a potential return date for star midfielder Ben Cunnington, as he continues his recovery from a secondary diagnosis of testicular cancer.

Cunnington returned to football drills at training on Tuesday, having recently increased his high-conditioning loads, with the Kangaroos to use an important next period to decide upon if and when the veteran will return this season.

The dual North Melbourne best and fairest underwent surgery to remove a tumour in July last year, before completing a nine-week course of chemotherapy to treat a secondary diagnosis last November.

The club will continue to be patient with Cunnington, putting no pressure on his return, though head of performance Kevin White said on Tuesday the Kangaroos were pleased with the 30-year-old's progress.

"He's going really well," White said.

"He's moved now from two high-conditioning sessions on the ground to three. He's probably had three to four weeks of that now. He's integrated (on Tuesday) back into some of the football drills. Over the next few weeks, it's that percentage of training and percentage of conditioning with him.

"We're looking now at a really strong three-week block to progress and integrate into the main group. We'll take it then at the end of that three weeks to assess where he lies in terms of his head and his body towards a return-to-play at the end of that point

"But, like always, there's no real pressure on him at this point in terms of having a date to return to play. The pleasing thing is that he's got a real return-to-play mindset on him at the minute.



"He's graduating week-on-week through some really good loads and consistent loading. (Tuesday) was another really good step for 'Cunners' in reintegrating with the main group through some skills."

His return game will be up there with Jason McCartney's. He's the definition of Shinboner. So happy for him and his family. Going to be very emotional return
