Opinion 13 Premierships Shared Between Just 4 Teams in the Last 17 years

What about a system wherein WA get the WA players, Vic's get Vic players, SA get the SAplayers and so on.
No need for drafts except in your own state.
Is that a workable system?

Sydney proposed this year's ago.
Unfortunately GWS came in and NSW won't have enough for 2 teams yet

As much as I love this idea and the endless grand finals us and the dockers would play each other in.

Especially if we nix the salary cap, the fairness streak in me says no. Its a national sport.

Rather than engage in a want for the flag to be shared around every 18 years like it's not a competition, how about the other clubs try and work out what exactly the likes of Geelong, Collingwood, Richmond and Hawthorn are doing to achieve sustained success?

I'd even throw Sydney in that mix too, even though they only got one in the past 17 years.

Don't aim to win a flag. Aim to create a dynasty. Take that up with your club and stop looking for big brother to provide you with handouts.

So we have to end the MCG monopoly for gf’s

Got it.

3 father son, 1 nga

A couple of free agents then ask other clubs to follow what we did

Rugby league did the same stupid thing to the western reds that victoria did to the eagles.

Made them pay visiting teams airfares. Western reds were popular and did alright on field, but were financially crippled by the airfare idiocy.
That is true. They did it very poorly across many fronts.

My take on what has happened is that it’s a consequence of equalisation. “Building a list” is now much more structured and planned with the knowledge that you can get access to much elite youth at the same time, and then the aim is bring them through together.

We never used to have the term “premiership window”

So now the aim is very much to win multiple premierships, because then you have to go back down and start the process all over again.

In this period Geelong, Hawthorn and Richmond managed this.

West Coast, the Bulldogs, Melbourne, Sydney and Collingwood didn’t.

Collingwood have won two, 13 years apart. Nothing particularly special about that.

We paid near enough to full freight for our F&S/NGA's. They come at opportunity costs too FYI, as sometimes you might need a different type.

You could have targeted any of our FA's and trade targets.

Our chief recruiter Derek Hine has been involved in 20 drafts. Surely you're not putting all of our 2 flags, 4 Grannies (5 if you include the draw), 7 Prelims and multiple finals appearances down to some F&S /NGA successes?

If you are, then as you are a reflection of the whole, it explains the defeatist mindset of your club.

No not just that.

This year you had 15 either Thursday, Friday or marquee time slot.

8 father son picks , 1 nga.

Several free agents. Of course that makes you more attractive.

You don't win a flag this year with father son

We had a shit tonne of Sunday games post ANZAC Day, when they all of a sudden turned from being the graveyard shift of the weekend, to the highest rating matches on telly.

You make your own marquee games. You make your club be a destination club.

Eliminate the victim mentality, otherwise you’ll be stuck in limbo perennially. I note the Eagles don’t have the same inferiority complex and they go out and win flags.

Haha

You survive off 1 Friday and Thursday night games , 3 national broadcast games on average for 10 years, 1 father son and we can talk.

Until then stfu

Not really. It is when the Victorian clubs started dominating. Since 2007 non-Victorian clubs have only won 2 premierships, both winning them in the dying seconds so it could have very easily been no premierships.
Non-VIC teams had won 8 of the previous 10 premierships. 11 of the last 17 GFs have also involved a non-VIC side, so it’s not as though it’s an all Victorian affair.

Do you think it’s the AFL’s fault or the Victorian club’s fault if Port Adelaide dominate H&A then choke in finals? Or if Fremantle continues to play an unattractive and poor game plan? Or that GCS continue to make poor decisions despite huge handouts by the AFL?

This VIC bias BS seriously has to stop. This country has become overrun by a very loud minority with a victim mentality.

How many years of Vic teams dominating will it take to convince you??

The truth is many Victorian fans don't want to see the issue. They don't want things to change and it possibly hurting their teams chances at a premiership.

If they refuse to see the issue then nothing will change and they will continue to benefit from it.

How come there was a decade long spell where 8 flags were won by non-VIC teams. What happened there?

The AFL is quite different now than it was 18 years ago.

Also the period you mentioned the AFL were so upset by it they tried to launch an investigation. It is worse now for non-Victorian sides but not a peep about an investigation.

Have a more NBA style free agency system. It’s by no means perfect.

Cap years and money that can be offered to free agents from other sides. Have soft and hard caps for TPP which encourages teams to develop and retain players rather than being rewarded with more draft picks for saying goodbye.

There needs to be greater incentive for retention for both teams and players.

Yep. I suggested yesterday a 10% retention bonus so if a player is drafted to a different state they are given a 10% retention bonus on top of their contract for the life of their career as long as they stay at the club they were drafted at. The moment they change clubs that bonus disappears.

Cola 4 or 5 flags
Foundation squads 3 flags

23 of 33 GFs we’ve had since the AFL era started has had an interstate team playing in it.

That’s almost 70% of GFs.
