Retired 14. Liam Jones

The Bombers also played the bottom 5 teams 8 times. Plus another 2 outside the 8. That fixture would have had Richmond in the 8, possibly even Adelaide.

Our draw won’t be too much worse next year.

The point is you can still perform to a reasonable extent if you get your defensive structures right. Personnel is only one aspect, and luckily for us we’ve got an elite full back in Weitering anchoring everything.

Young and McDonald have played enough footy and should be able to cover to some extent.

Must be so serious, whatever has made him decide all this. He worked so hard for his footy career with us , turned it around wonderfully , and now retiring over a vaccination. Interesting. Didn’t see this coming, hoped and thought he might have stuck around.

One of my favourite players, wish him all the best.

(The other day, my daughter had three operations. She’s all ok. But my point is this: I had no idea what was in any of the medication given to her, no idea how she’d react to all the sedatives and anaesthetics -I reacted terribly to mine - no idea what was used when the surgeons sealed her wounds, infact, I have no idea about the fancy schmancy writing on the back of panadol and what those ingredients mean. You should see the list of side effects on the oxycodone sheet she was given!

My daughter is 3. I fully trusted the specialists and nurses. I didn’t think twice, other than normal motherly panic snd worry during surgery.

We don’t jump up and down over medical treatment normally. I don’t understand why anti-vaxxers are doing it now when a needle isn’t just about you, but about helping everyone else.)
Hope your precious girl is doing well after surgery. So stressful when your kids need hospital care.
Have nothing but the utmost respect for all front line workers, especially at a time like this. Dedicated, professional, working in highly stressful circumstances.

Like you, I'm disappointed by Liam's decision. Hoped he'd reconsider his stance. He and Weitering - what a combo. So sad to see their partnership end this way.
Had also hoped that Doc's situation, would have contributed to Jones, altering his position. Doc is the very definition of courage and stoicism.
Two gf's of mine were diagnosed with breast cancer in past 12 months. They and their families have endured an additionally arduous and challenging time.

None of us is promised eternal good health. Life circumstances can change on a dime. Like you AWG, I'm trusting my GP. I'm trusting the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) and esteemed epidemiologists. IMO, vaccination, especially during a pandemic, is critical to protecting majority of community. Especially health care professionals, front line workers, immune compromised people and our most vulnerable.

I wish Jones well in retirement. New and unlimited opportunity for his replacement and a different looking Carlton backline. Bring on 2022. Go Blues.

Exactly my opinion.

How ironic it would be that a forward revitalises his career down back……AGAIN!

McGovern 191cm. Liam Jones 198cm. Not a replacement.

Congrats to Liam Jones on turning his career around and becoming one of the best defenders in the league. A brave decision to stick to his beliefs and give up his career. Your body is your own and what you put into it should never be mandated.

Thank goodness we picked up Lewis Young and hopefully Marchbank can get a good run at it this year.

No one is irreplaceable (maybe Sammy). It’ll be tough but a combination of Young, McDonald and hopefully a mature age draft pick is enough to work with.

The real shame is Weitering probably becomes more lockdown and defence conscious. I was hoping he’d move towards the opposite in 2022.
It's definitely a moneyball solution to this problem. I think we will be fine with a more team based defence.

Turned into a great player from the absolute scrapheap and ended up contributing enormously to the team.

Injured a number of his own players with his kamikaze attack on the ball, and playing so far off your man to back yourself to get to the contest first was always a high risk strategy that was sometimes exposed badly, but on the whole, he won his position.

I loved the combination he built with Weitering and that will be the biggest thing we miss next year, because we can maybe fill the position, but the chemistry will take time.

Like others have said, there's more to a person's story than meets the eye, so no judgement from me.

[Edited by Mod]Sorry but I’m done with listening to people that think they know better. If you can’t make this small sacrifice for your club, a club that incidentally gave him a second chance to reinvent himself as a player down back…or for your immunocompromised captain…good riddance.

I'll say this. I was told by a former Carlton player not to go hard on Liam a couple of days ago. I don't have specifics but was told if and when the entire story comes out the court of public opinion would well and truly turn in Liam's favor.

I had already decided before then against railing on him.

We all have decisions to make regarding the vaxx or otherwise. There may well have been much more to it than a stance on the vaccine. There's a whole lot of racing to conclusions without knowing the facts. Way too many assumptions being made.

Liam was a helluva player for us and deserves our respect and appreciation for what he brought to the club. As a collective fan base we death rode him harder than any player that I can remember ever doing. Then he and Josh Fraser turned him around and he gave us several years of the best combinaton KPD's we've had since Silvagni.

All the best Liam. Thanks for your years of service. Whether all of your story gets aired is on you and I hope the infestation of maggots in the industry let you, and yours, reach that decision.
Classy post for a classy player.
I will miss him but the team will miss him more I suspect.

F*** Covid

In the absence of any good reason for his decision…what a complete and utter flog. Sorry but I’m done with listening to people that think they know better. If you can’t make this small sacrifice for your club, a club that incidentally gave him a second chance to reinvent himself as a player down back…or for your immunocompromised captain…good riddance.

There are much bigger things in life than kicking around a red ball. Bit of class wouldn't go astray.

Courageous decision whether or not you agree with it. The full story will emerge in the coming weeks.

Good luck Jonesy and thanks for the memories.

Not a great way to leave the club that gave him a lifeline.
Oh well, courageous and talented for sure… but his final act is to burn his mates and the
club. So he leaves with an *.
A decision he’ll live to regret but possibly never admit? Sad day.
Step up Gov, Marchy and Young. It’s there if you want it.

In any event, I came here to pay tribute to a bloke who re-invented himself from an average forward to a premium KPD just like a former Swans legend in Heath Grundy. I wish him all the best in retirement .

The Club will now work closely with the AFL regarding options available to replace Jones’ spot on the list for the 2022 AFL season.
