It's funny you bring up Trenners, as I was going to use the same example. Totally agree on both Trengove and Bowey.

EDIT: Trengove is still only 29.
If you could build a footy IQ for an 18 year old Trenners would be that bloke.

Last guy I remember watching with this much composure for us, which is a bad example is Trenners
Trenners was AFL level talent, just a ****ed foot.

Anything around Trenners and Grimes time is a massive head **** and not something I ever look back on fondly, I think that's why my mind has blocked any good memories about it. The club was such a mess.

I get it, I hated Scully from his first game for us and was happy he left, he always looked average to me.

Trenners was different, I thought I was seeing the next Voss or Riccuito

I never remember seeing that level of talent but like I said, my memory refuses to compute happiness with that time line so you very well could be right.

The collar jumpers, Cameron Schwab, Bailey Ball, Jurruh playing GTA in real life, Aussie deciding to eat turtle instead of footballing, $kully, Stynes dying... **** that club

There was a small window between late 09 and the Brisbane Game in 2010 when I thought we'd nailed the draft and we were on track. It faded pretty quick

Grimes looked great across HB, Trenners very composed and reliable. I probably didn't see Trenners being a game breaking player, but more a reliable, steady head. Both very smart players, sadly ruined by the club and injury (throwing Grimes in the guts ****ed him, bad collarbone break I think?).
I thought Morton would be a gun too. His first couple of years were great on a wing. Then his confidence disappeared and he was mentally shot like the rest of the club.

I saw Trenners as more like Bartel. Didn’t have the ridiculous power or eye-catching highlights like Voss or Riccutio etc

I got Bartel vibes. He was so versatile. Really a much better talent then Scully - it’s a crying shame the way it worked out for him

He's up there, but Trenners was the most composed teenager I've ever seen in red and blue, Bowey might just be up there.
Trenners is up there with Matt Egan and Anthony Morabito for injury cruelled careers. I know trenners got back to play another 40 odd games, but he was nothing close to what he was at 18/19. He would have been something like patty Dangerfield who can kick, of not for that foot.

I just loved boweys debut, having the confidence to fly for that mark, and the way he held the ball up and not be overawed showed he has been manager perfectly til now, and ready

I reckon Trenners was Jimmy Bartel v2 - fantastic overhead, courageous, natural footballer. Him and Jurrah are two of the biggest unfulfilled talents of the modern AFL era.

Whats the modern era?

let's not go overboard. most of his touches were pretty standard and if he didn't hit the target they would have been horrendous mistakes. He isn't a slippery as Caleb Daniel who is really herky-jerky with his movements. A good debut.

No-one is more composed than Salem as an 18 year old though.

And not sure why people are talking about Grimes. The guy failed because he was a horrible decision maker in defence and tried to kick the cover off the ball when kicking to anyone. A turnover king.

Jurrah had a way better chance of being something special imo, I swear a lot of this is hyperbole around Trengove and people building something up way more in their mind than was actually really there.

****ing Sylvia had more talent than Trenners if you want to talk about unfulfilled I reckon.

Probably a good comparison, might not have been as explosive as danger. But I just remember he was so strong over the ball, kept his feet well and could pick the ball up at Pace. Plus he was so bloody courageous.

Actually you're right he wasn't quite as fast as I'm thinking, but he absolutely lost all ability to run after the injury.

People compare him to Daniel coz his ball use and size. Don't read into the like for like too much. As far as I know Daniel cant jump on anyones head either.

ImissFrosty you probably don't remember young Trenners. He had more poise and composure than most 200 gamers
Nah, I don't remember yung trenners. I only remember shit trenners. All my Dees memories are from 2010 onwards. First game i ever went to was 2009 vs Freo and i was still a cute little thing so. For some reason though i have extremely vivid memories of Watts, Scully, Grimes, Trengove, Toump etc being shit but not a lot of them being good. I wonder why that is???

Sylvia is a hard one to judge as he had a lot of good athletic qualities but he was a pretty dumb footballer. I don't think Trengove would have won a brownlow but I think injuries robbed him of a career probably a bit better than what Jones had for us.
