Fair enough I wasn't saying he was exactly like Riccuito more that he was gonna be that figure hear mid for his club like Buckley, Voss, Roo, Hayes etc.

I also just feel like sometimes Roo gets left out of the best mids discussion and that guy was a ******* beast.

Roo was pretty much Martin but tougher. The bloke was amazing. Would be in my top 10 that ive seen all time for sure.

He was a violent man, couldn't get enough of watching him smash campaigners and kick goals from 55.

People went a little far with my analogy, don't think Trenners was ever going to be out best ever or anything that's why I said ignore athletic traits because you need a mix of both. As a direct comparison to Bowey though purely on footy IQ from day dot.
I understood what you meant I think, Trengove didn’t have stand out excellence in a particular area, but was exceptional as an 18 year old for good skills and judgement and footy smarts. And I still believe that would have taken him to 300 games as an excellent player if injury and Melbourne hadn’t got in the way. Ah well, shit happens but I felt very sad for him

Better way to explain it is Trac and Oliver, you needed development coaches to teach them fundamentals. They both got buy on explosiveness and power at stoppages etc but had to learn basics.
Trenners had already played with men, back when you could still bump as well and he was so perfect in the way he put his head over the footy and got it. The coaches would have looked at him and gone there's nothing to teach this kid. He gets it. If he had legspeed or explosiveness he was a guaranteed superstar.

This lists are always ****ed to try and do but did you drop Judd because he wasn't at his peak for as long? Id argue Judd's WC days would have him at 4.

Longevity has to play a part in thinking for sure I reckon. Ablett Jnr, Martin and Voss played better for longer. Judd was good at Carlton but not as dynamic as his West Coast days

McLeod holds a special place in my heart, probably bias. But ive never seen a smoother mover with better skills in my time, big time performer in big games too, he was amazing to watch. Probably my fav non Dees players ever.

His only deficiencies were really speed. I reckon if he debuted today Simon would love him. As a debutant draftee he had no fear of the contest - went hard and won more than he should have at his age.

Simon would have loved him. Good contested player. If we had 18yo Trengove on our side right now I would play him where we are playing Brayshaw most games on the skinny side wing. He could do all of that stuff but a bit better. Really good overhead, a natural toughness defensively and less inclined to sky-ball or kick it straight out on the full.

His marking was what set him apart from most mids. Really comfortable over head.

Yeah fair enough, it always gets difficult because Boomer Harvey never got close to these lists but he was basically a very very good player for 20 years.

Haha not quite the same but my fav not Dees player as a kid was Aussie Jones. Loved watching him across HB

To be fair Gus is a decent mark overhead but Trengove was better. Ancient Demon was happy with your assessment of Trenners v Scully btw. He loved Trengove as a footballer and was deeply suspicious of Scully even before he ****ed us. He saw Scully was a great runner but thought he might lack if asked to play football, which turned out to be pretty perceptive

Also loved McLeod. Brother is a Crows fan so watched a fair bit of them growing up. Like you I loved how clean he was, so smooth and effortless running around. Lovely to watch.

He played a NEAFL season for NT Thunder after he retired, even more amazing to watch up close. One of the very few players on a footy field I watched in awe and forgot what I was doing, haha.

I know he was a bit of a pick off field but on pure football talent Jason Akermanis could seriously play. His skills on both feet were phenomenal.

Worth an honourable mention for sure but hes not top 10 imo. Pavlich is another who desreves a mention, genuine freak who could play anywhere.

Not top 10 but he was a delight to watch.

Matthew Pavlich was ridiculously underrated. He notched up 6 All Australians. One as a CHB, one at CHF and then another as an onballer.

Freak talent

Nick Reiwoldt goes close for me and I also reckon Pavlich is often overlooked just because he played for Freo.

Riewoldt couldn't kick. No clutch gene either. You notice the guys I ranked tend to perform best in the big games and big moments. Wouldn't even have him in my top 20 I don't think.
