Because that only works if things go to sh*t. If things go well you are in strife having an unsigned coach that you want to keep and when you’re trying to win a flag.
But you have the luxury of having a uncontracted Clarkson out there as a fallback option if required

What a laughing stock our club is becoming. Good luck getting membership renewals.

Before any nutters get a little hot under the collar, go back and look at our PF finish, then rewatch the GF....then rewatch last year's GF, and then the finals performances we've delivered the past decade....take a look at our squad currently, and then tell me you honestly believe this coach will repeat what was achieved in 2011?

Our squad needed to begin the transition to a rebuild within the next year. Renewing this coach for a further 2 years does not begin that long road, it simply means we'll be in the wilderness for a very long time.

I don't understand why not go into 2022 under the current contract, assess how he is going then make a call on if there is an extension or not?
They just tipped out the assistants.
You can't tip out the head coach as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if assistants wouldn't come if there wasn't certainty around the head coach.

Players still want him. Employees also want to know who the boss is for the medium term. It also prevents against more short term decisions next year when somebody has time to change things. It prevents him from being poached if things go well.

Chris Scott can coach football. If you need that explained to you then I simply can’t help. I’d accept the arguement that he might be stale but the other side of the coin is he’s a highly intelligent guy and I’m sure there is no better footy brain to make the necessary tweaks.

3 years is the perfect amount of time. Most of the older players will have retired and we will have a much better view on if we will bounce with the 10 or so youngsters we have or if we are in for a long cold dark decade rebuild that he need not be around for.

Awesome to have one of the very best coaches in the league at the helm for a tricky 3 year period.

Great news.

You can't be serious? I've defended Scott to the hilt at times, but this is bordering on madness. We changed everything else, but we keep the same senior coach who has consistently kept us playing a bland defensive high possession Hawks era style that doesn't hold up against high pressure teams?

We could have just let him see how things went the first half of next year, and if there were significant changes, then re-signed him. We had no need to extend him now, just as we had no need to do it after our straight sets finals loss in 2018. We keep doing the same thing hoping for different results...and now he will end up being the longest serving coach in the club's history, with 1 flag to his name from his first year.

Clarkson, the greatest coach of the modern era, was at the helm for 17 years, and even they knew he wasn't the right man for a rebuild. He at least has 4 flags to show for it, and multiple different Premiership teams from different eras. Scott keeps getting extensions and he still hasn't got us a flag since 2011 - that was a decade ago.

How can people not think this won't be a bad thing - for all concerned in the club? Scott clearly has his favourites, and he's a very stubborn man who now has some pretty easy going guys in Betts and Pops who will just go along with whatever he says.

Unless we actually play a lot of kids next year, and significantly change our gamestyle like Longmire did, I can't see next year being any different than this year. Then we'll make finals again, get close, recruit more senior discards, and go again - until we're left with nothing but a bunch of has beens and disgruntled kids who can't get a game - due to said has beens consistently taking their spot due to Scott's selection favouritism (see Dahlhaus, Ratugolea, Higgins, Kolo, Henderson etc. as examples from this year).

I've been positive in the past, and I have been very happy with everything the club has done this off-season since my dummy spit post finals - but this is about 5 steps back and 3 steps forward.

Seriously when will enough be enough?

We will know within 5 rounds if next year will be another wasted season playing the kick/mark control the ball style, or if he has finally woken up to how modern football is actually played. How he selects the team early will also be a sign of genuine progress in his philosophy or not.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the chip mark game is here to stay. Honestly what undoes us is our inability to transition to a faster overlap game once we've found a hole in their zone. Training to have a bit more dare and play on instinct will be the major change imo.

Obviously a lot of discussion has taken place and the club has decided to back Scott in and give him some breathing space with what we hope is a rebuild over the next few years. New coaches around him, some new draftees to work with, and presumably an understanding that he's our guy for now but there needs to be some immense changes. One can only hope that Scott still has the passion, desire and belief that he's the right man to lead us into the next chapter, and it's off that basis that he's been extended. Personally I felt that he seemed really stressed and burned out for most of the year, but at the end of the day I'm not a mind reader and I'm not privy to those internal discussions.

I don't mind it. You know what the media landscape is like, if Scott were out of contract next year it wouldn't take long for all the murmurs around his axing to appear as soon as we drop a game or 2, especially after what happened in the prelim. Look at what happened with Teague, it's an enormous distraction that we don't need and it's not like there are any proven better coaches available (except for Clarko who is very unlikely to come to Geelong, and overrated anyway IMO). We're in a transitional period and there are going to be bumps in the road, so I'm not against taking a more proactive approach, throwing support behind Chris and saying you've got a few years to show us what you can do. And believe me I'm no Scott apologist, I was calling for his head after the prelim like many others. But for better or worse he's our man for now, and in all fairness he's probably earned a chance to have a decent shot at a rebuild with new people around him and some new cattle to put on the park. With a gun to my head I still probably lean towards a new coach, but I do think Scotty is highly talented and has it in him to turn things around.

With that said if we rock up next year with the same old players always on the park chipping it around the backline all game, while all the kids sit around in the reserves becoming disgruntled, I'll be so ****ing over it. There simply HAS to be change at this point.

I told the club 2 years ago I'm not renewing my membership until Scott Is gone and that was after 38 years of being a member.

Looks like I'll have to wait another 3 years.

So what you're saying is we need to move the ball faster from half back rather than kicking it down the line to a contest or kicking it backwards to maintain control? Wow, that almost sounds like exactly what we need to change.

I’m afraid I now must officially call bullshit. No crack at you but your mail was clearly wrong.

It's quite possible that Mad_Catter's mail WAS correct, but Scott has discussed it with the club, they've both made concessions, he's re-considered his position in light of all that, and THEN decided to keep going.

A lot of really good points, however, I still don't understand why we couldn't have just given him the first say 6 rounds of next season, to see if the gamestyle and selection mentality has undergone a major shift, and then re-signed him if we were trending in the right direction.

Just as there wasn't a need to do it in 2018, there was no need for us to re-sign him post-season following a finals blowout, when he was already in contract 'til the end of next year anyway.

Now as it stands, even if nothing does change and it does all go to sh*t, we have no room to move, and will have to pay him out for a further 2 years, rather than not at all.

Hell, even extend him by 1 year if you want to take the heat off...but two... it's just absolute stupidity on the club's behalf. I mean, even if they were looking at it from a purely financial sense, get all the members signed up with the notion that there could be a change of coach on the horizon (like Jack The Godfather for example), and then make an announcement once he's demonstrated that we're on the right path.

This really benefits no-one, and just reeks of us burying our heads in the sand thinking we can do the same thing again next year - but hope for different results.

Scott is in the top handful of coaches in the comp and has been for a decade. I am very happy he will be at the helm over the next three years as our list will undergo significant transition.

I am also very pleased that we are revamping our coaching panel which had no doubt become extremely stale and in some cases ie the Scarlett rumours, counter-productive to creating a happy and cohesive team.

You only need to look at the likes of Bomber and Hardwick to see that significant off-field change while keeping faith in the senior coach can reap huge rewards. I'm not saying we'll win the flag in 2022 but I am more confident that new voices will freshen things up and have a positive impact.

I hope that behind closed doors, the following are being considered:

* requirement to play at least 4 players under 50 games / under 21-22 years of age in the seniors each week. I think Scott had a similar requirement in his early days. Pumping games into Duncan and Guthrie paid off in terms of them becoming very good players and also prevented them from being poached after a few years in the system due to a lack of gametime.
* identify a number of good prospects on the list ie Stephens, De Koning and play them for a minimum of 5+ games next year, obviously more if form warrants it.
* all players over the age of 30 to be rested for a minimum of 1-2 games during the season. This gives more gametime to younger players and gives our senior players a better chance of being fit and ready if we are to do anything in finals.
* no more Misfits, Wolfpack etc. I get how this allowed line coaches and players to bond but from the outside it seems it all become quite divisive. The stories about Scarlett refusing to play Clark in the backline are appalling.
* some serious sports psychology. I've posted before about how relaxed all the Demons players were in the media in the lead up to the prelim. Danger and Selwood seem to play with the weight of the world on their shoulders. Too much internal pressure, or letting the external noise get to them. Look at how Richmond and now Melbourne have gone about it to create a sense of fun for their players, and try to replicate it.

I see it differently. Controlling Football doesn’t withstand pressure of finals. Need to put the other team under pressure so you can capitalise on their mistakes.

Having said that, no coach is better equipped to reinvent their game than Scott. He has done it multiple times in 11 seasons. The question for me is will his ego allow him to concede this isn’t working.

He's up there with the best during the H & A season, but falls away badly come finals.
