2003 Draft Camp

No particular surprises, although I'd have to go through the club lists to see if there are any omissions. Bartel from Murray, Batson from NB and Mentiplay from Sandy a bit suprising - they are a good size though.

The ruckman hardly get the pulse racing. Chris Farmer has missed most of the year through injury but was rated very highly at the start of the year, have to think he is a real chance.

My suspicions Dean Chester would be looked at closely have been confirmed.

Burges is obviously a serious candidate.

At 194cm though? Hope he can jump.

His best chance would be if Aaron Sandilands thought he was a rover and hit it to him.

Yeah i was under the impression that Burges was a Koutoufides/Pavlich size........misinformation then im assuming. Must be pretty decent then if he is being invited on the whim of that then

I told you dasler that his school coach wouldn't have a clue.

For you jojo, but only the WA players:

Graham, Adams, Jovanovic, Teague (SF)
Dunin, Franz, Matson, Hayto (CL)
Ames, Embley, Harper (SD)
Salecic (WP)
Curley, Peake, (EF)
Priddis (SUB)

That was as at 22nd Aug, but I think you'll find it's right.

Kellett wasn't invited, perhaps because he went last year, but I reckon he won't even be drafted.

McQualter, Hall, Foley and Travers some others to miss out.

Went and saw Farmer yesterday - once again I was unimpressed. Zac Dawson took him to the cleaners - Zac might be a chance because he is very athletic and skinny still.

Of the other players invited to draft camp, Bentick was excellent, perhaps BOG, McLean was very good again. Trotter didn't play.

Herrington kicked 2.2 but once again was well beaten by Hartigan. Herrington failed to chase on a couple of occassions too, and Hartigan ran down and kicked a goal.

What is a screening camp?

Originally there used to be just the draft camp. The numbers invited kept growing and growing until it got to 120. This made it a bit difficult to manage and they had to run 2 batches.

In response the limited the numbers at the draft camp, and introduced state-based screenings. This allows for arounf 70 at the draft camp and 100 at the screenings.

At the draft camp there are information sessions, media training, physical testing, skills testing and interviews. At the state screenings there is a scaled down program of physical testing mostly.

The state screenings are basically the 2nd-chance camp for those guys not invited to draft camp.

Do you have to go to Draft Camp to get Drafted

It helps. Most of the draft camp invitees are drafted, say around 50-60 of the 70. When you think that there are about 70-80 first-year guys taken in any year (draft and rookie) it shows how important it is. Probably only around 20-30 slots for all the rest of the first-year players.

How's the best way to get into the Draft Camp

Be selected an All-Australian at the under-18s, be a member of the AFL-AIS under-17 academy, be nominated by 4-5 clubs, be 198cm+ and be able to tie your shoelaces.

Do you have to play TAC Cup to make the AFL

If you are in Melbourne pretty much yes. Even many of the guys who come through the VFL (Sam Mitchell, Michael Firrito, Jeremy Clayton, John Baird etc) were very good TAC cup players. It would be very hard to think of too many that hadn't come through that system. Probably less than 10 Vics in the last 6 years or so.

If you are in Melbourne, unless you can play ruck (ie 198cm+) then you pretty much need to play TAC Cup as a 16-17 year old, and then have a 2nd year in the TAC Cup as a 17-18 year old and be in the Vic Metro training squad. Outside of that you are looking at 2-3 years in the VFL where you have to try and get one of the 4-5 positions a week that are available for kids in a week.

Medium, outside forward who finds space and is a penetrating kick. Smart near goals. All-Australian U/18 in 2002. Member AIS-AFL Academy in 2002. Vice-captain of WA at 2003 National AFL U/18 Championships. From Kelmscott FC.

And there it is.
When fullly fit he was considered among the best LAST year. When a year younger than everyone else.
At one stage touted as a top 5 pick if eligible.
Sure might be a stronger draft but had this guy been fully fit he would be right up there again this season.
If he is around pick 14 Freo WILL take him

Absolutely. I had Gayfer, Tenace, Cooney, Dunn, McLean, Moody and Clarke in the top-30 prospects last season but they were all too young to be drafted. Clubs won't drop them too far on this season's form, and will understand that Moody missed preseason. The only question is what position does he play in the AFL.

Next year's draft is not looking as strong. This year amongst my top-40 players only Garruba, Knights, Sharp, Copping and Egan are too young and elligable for 2004. The draft age going up hurts too, there are some guys who are showing out (Deledio, DeLuca, Drum, Rioli, Burke) who won't be elligable until 2005.

Weaver, is the draft age definitely being raised? If so it just extends our penalties from 2 years to 3.

It would be foolish to use the words "AFL", "draft" and "definately" in the same sentance. It seems very likely that they'll push the age to 18 though. It would probably reduce the strength of the 2004 draft by about a third.

Carlton might get lucky though. With new draftees getting a mandatory 2-year deal, some of the clubs are talking about recylcing players in the latter rounds so they only have to offer them one-year. That may see more good youngsters available in later rounds and for rookie lists.
