Marc Murphy, Nathan Jones, Andrew Swallow, Richard Doughlas, Darren Pfeiffer, Shaun Higgins.

Those are the pure midfielders in this draft.

Murphy- 179cm, 75kg
Jones- 177cm, 85kg
Swallow- 183cm, 75kg
Higgins- 183cm, 76kg
Pfieffer- 183cm, 78kg
Doughlas- 179cm, 68kg

rate them from 1st-6th

Personally id love to use pick no7 on Higgins OR Doughlas Or Pfeiffer Or Swallow

There are plenty more in the draft and if you rate pfeiffer as a mid, you must include ellis also as they both play a bit across half back/fb.

If we are talking potential...

Personally I think its...

1. murphy - easily no 1
2. hurn - will be a hard go getter
3. jones - ball magnet and hard at it
4. swallow - stocks have risen amazingly since 2004
5. ellis - classy but underdeveloped.

1.swallow-he as pace, class, strength and as an inside midfielder he can also run with the ball. Would be the one imo who will break games open at afl level.he has a bit of a dodgy kick but didnt judd. look where he is now. A brownlow medalist.
2.murphy-has class, he is quick, got a good kick and has an allround solid skills but theres nothing really special about him.
3.hurn-hes got a thumping kick which will definately help him at afl level.he will, well he should trim down over summer when he does a footy pre-season.but im not to sure if he'll be able to play in the midfield at afl level.we'll have to wait and see.
4.jones-he is a ball magnet with a good kick and allround talent
5.pfieffer-

My rankings for the midfielders

Class, quick, good kick and allround solid skills...............nope, nuthin special there!

Dale Thomas seems to get under the radar of a few people. I expect him to become one of the best players drafted in 2005.

Murphy, Ellis, Oakley-Nicholls, Thomas, Jones and Pfeiffer would be my top midfielders.

How do you rate Oakley Nicholls?

I personally believe that in about 3 years the kid will be a fantastic player.

Agreed. Only some injury (shoulder and lack of form sways me.
One thing in his favour is he can play most positions on the ground. I think, as this is predominantly 'valueing' them as mids - he is excluded as he, IN MY OPINION ONLY, will be a half back type. Very attacking one though! He is very quick.

Sorta like McPhee?

I reckon it depends what you want/need in your "midfield". If your club is:

(1) getting killed at the stoppages:
1. Murphy
2. Swallow
3. Jones

(2) lacks consistency, good skills across the flanks or wings:
1. Hurn
2. Ellis
3. Drum

(3) is slow and boring and you need flair and X-factor around the ground:
1. Oakley-Nicholls
2. Thomas
3. Scott Pendlebury

(4) Really need one of the top two players in one (or more) of the above areas to improve your side but because of your draft position can't get them and need to gamble on an "unknown" quality:
1. Muston
2. Varcoe

Essendon definitely need a inside midfielder to compliment the pacy outside midfielders we've recruited the last 3 years.

yeah i think we at essendon need everything midfield can offer, an inside player who can run the lines who has good skills, ala chriss judd but is there one in this years draft that we will get with pick 7 even if he has injury queries like muston or varcoe

In the AFL, I can see him as a back pocket and not as a midfielder. He has good speed and can win a lot of ball but his (180,70) body size and inability to hurt the opposition with the footy make me question whether he could play an offensive role in the midfield in the AFL .

Inability to hurt the opposition? Between his footskills, inside ability and willingness to carry the ball, I guess I'm watching a different player to you.

As for his size, he's a spectacular overhead mark, so him being short doesn't hurt him there.

1.Murphy
2.Jones
3.Hurn
4.Swallow
5.Douglas
6.Ellis
7.Pfeiffer
8.Oakley Nicholls
9.Thomas
10.Varcoe
11.Mills
12.Pendelbury
13.Seal
14.Higgins
15.Grant

'Inside ability and willingness to carry the ball' It's all well and good doing it at TAC level but could he do it at AFL level?? i have my doubts. He will be a very capable BP or HBF in the AFL imo similar to a Nathan Brown of Melbourne or Troy Makepeace of North. Yes he is a excellent overhead mark for his size but when it comes to going body on body against a Mark Ricciuto or Chris Judd in the midfield battles he will get pushed to the side too easily. Will be more suited to playing on a man in defence and using his great defensive skills where he will face players of similar size Miline, Garry Ablett Jnr, Davey etc..
