The West Coast Eagles (2004 +), Brisbane Lions (2001-04), Essendon Bombers (2000-2001) and dare I say it Port Adelaide Power (2001-2004) were able to consistently put a very damaging midfield out on the park week after week. This gave them the impetuous to challenge for the top 4 spots and then to win that elusive flag.
The Adelaide Crows second tier midfield players would the area of most concern and most definitely an area that we need to rectify to become a legitimate premiership threat over the next 4 or 5 years.
The challenge I would like you to do is to come up with list of 10 players who you consider would be out best midfield options. The bench mark would the West Coast Eagles so they would have to have the ability to compete with them and any other top ranked midfields currently in the AFL.
Try and consider who is going to be in the AFC midfield for 2007 and possibility beyond that as it is important that we develop new player and keep a constant balance of talent (or someone you would like to given a go – Darren Pfieffer or Graham Johncock).
We need to find a spot for 1 half forward and 1 half back flanker; 2 wingers and a centreman. Rover and Ruck rover and 3 interchange player (Ruckman not included)
10 midfielders
1) Simon Goodwin
2) Tyson Edwards
3) Brent Reilly
4) Brett Burton
5) Martin Mattner
6) Scott Thompson
7) Robert Shirley
8) Nathan Van Berlo
9) Richard Douglas
10) Chris Knights
I didn’t select Mark Ricciuto as a midfield option as I believe that he should spend 85% of the game in the forward 50 now as a key forward and developing a new generation of player has to be a priority.
Andrew Mcleod adds more value to the side running of the half back flank and as a defender now, that’s why I didn’t include him as a primary midfield player. If he was needed he could go on the ball but like Mark Ricciuto it is imperative that we start to develop a new generation of hard on ball players.
Graham Johncock has more versatility as a back pocket and his creative run out of defence could be stifled if he was roaming around in the midfield. I don’t believe that every player has to be tried in the midfield especially if they have found a niche role in the side.
With Ricciuto, Mcleod, Goodwin and Edwards moving into there twilight years we need to make sure the Mattner, Thompson’s and Shirley’s get more on ball responsibility and then the Knights, Van Berlo and Douglas’s can slowly find there feet over the next 30 – 40 odd games.
Apologies to: Michael Doughty, Darren Pfeiffer, Bernie Vince, Jason Porplyzia, and John Hinge
