2008 lions draw

Yeah, many have us tipped to go top 2 for chrissakes!

We're gonna get called underachievers no matter what next year.

How long until someone on the main board tries to insinuate that it was Brisbane supporters who were claiming we'd go top 2 next year?

I agree with you Warwick and BrownDog way to early to be discussing top 4, lets at least see how our side comes together from round 1 to 11 before we get into talking top 4. I think we are a good chance to make finals but lets wait till at least after the Christmas break before we get serious.

Hey,

I just noticed that both times we are scheduled to play back to back games in Melbourne, the weekend off is in between.:(

I had planned to spend a week in Melbourne both times and catch two games.:(

Oh well.

Yep. Worst case scenario with our tough start to the year and we only win 1 or 2 out of the first 7 games, and play catch up all season.

Can someone explain the logic to me for having the Broncos and Lions on the same night?

Wasn't the Broncos v Cowboys match scheduled a fair bit back (so not a coincidence that it clashes with the AFL?)

Madness!

The NRL has only announced which teams are playing whom in which round. They don't control who plays whom at what time - Channel 9 does that. You can't plan around an event that doesn't have a fixed time and day.

That's true Spanner. I guess with 2008's draw the Vic members are not happy. The draw is a werid but we could have done alot worse.

It's not great for Victorian members, but at least there is a Geelong game if you want to make the trek. Same with the Gold Coast game for Queensland-based members.

Its just amazing a huge Qld Derby is on the same weekend as Brisbanes only FN game of the season.......Nine will schedule it for FN and unfortunately the AFL will be flogged in both tv and attendance, it'd be great if it were up against a NSW derby game or say Cowboys v Roosters.

A lot of us don't mind going down to sleepy hollow for a match as it's quite entertaining watching the locals there but you simply can't get a ticket unless you pay through the nose, and I'm not talking about $30-40, last time I tried I was looking well over $100 for a ticket! It was U2-esque!!!!

Geelong has made it impossible for lions supporters to go there and since they've been really successful, it's not going to get any easier.

Referring to the Gold Coast game; I was envisaging going to Launceston to watch the lions play against my 2nd favourite non-Lions side and then I saw the week before we were playing at the Gold Coast against my 1st favourite non-lions club and thought "Launceston or Gold Coast?"

Didn't have to think long!

Apologies to anyone whom might have been going to the Apple Isle with me. Stuff that, Queensland here I come!

Sure you wouldn't rather come to Brisbane for a game and come see the Den? ;)

Either way, will be good to finally meet the Toolman.

:(:(:( The Geelong game on a Saturday, now I have to hope that my club gets the bye that week. The Saturday night games are too hard to get to after footy.

At least there is the Melbourne game at the G on Sunday.

Looks as if the trip North with the Father In Law is a real option this year.

We will not be playing the Kangaroos Round 1 of the NAB Cup. They will play the Western Bulldogs in Darwin instead. Looks like it will be Brisbane Lions Vs. Essendon (the Dogs were to play the Dons) at Carrara on Saturday 16 February. Would be good if it were the Dons as we only play them once during the season and they don't visit Queensland for the 2nd year in a row.

Yep, happy with this. :thumbsu:

I'm surprised Essendon doesn't make the trip to the Gabba for the second year running, but if this Nab cup schedule is true, make sure you give Mal a nice reception.

I hope Clark kicks 8 on him.

Personally I would prefer Mills, Tippett or a more lesser known player to dominate all over Mal - I am sure that would be a more embarrassing return. As long as we are able to play with at least a functional forwardline he shouldn't have it as easy as he did in 2007

Apparently the AFL should have been aware of a possible clash back in August.

A CROSS-code feud is brewing, and Queensland football fans are in the firing line.

The AFL and the NRL are each blaming the other for a blockbuster night of Friday football next year that is sure to stretch Brisbane's public transport system to breaking point.

Almost 90,000 football fans will flood the city on March 28, with the Brisbane Lions scheduled to play Collingwood at the Gabba and the Brisbane Broncos set to take on interstate rival the North Queensland Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium.

Collingwood is the AFL's biggest-drawing team and the Lions are expecting a record crowd of about 40,000.

And the Broncos-Cowboys derby is a feature game of rugby league's Centenary celebrations and the crowd at Suncorp should exceed 50,000.

Queensland Transport is bracing for peak-hour gridlock and is already in discussions about how to avoid a traffic nightmare.

A further complication is that the start times for each game are within 10 minutes of each other and ticket holders to both matches are entitled to free public transport.

Yesterday, Lions chief executive officer Michael Bowers and Broncos boss Bruno Cullen laid the blame at each other's feet.

"The biggest concern for the club is that the clash has to happen," Bowers said.

"The AFL goes out with its draw well in advance and it's disappointing that rugby league has decided to create the clash and therefore create this situation with public transport.

"We provide free public transport, as do the Broncos, so it's going to be quite taxing on everyone now that the NRL has created this clash."

The AFL releases its draw in October with exact dates for all 22 rounds. The NRL releases its draw at about the same time but without the precise days and times.

The NRL confirmed the details for the first five rounds earlier this month. This included the March 28 Broncos-Cowboys blockbuster clash.

However, Cullen said the date for the "Queensland derby" had been set in stone since August.

He also suggested the AFL was heavily promoting its 150th anniversary to steal some thunder from league's Centenary.

The match between the Broncos and Cowboys will commemorate – to the day – the 100th anniversary of rugby league in Queensland.

"It's part of the Centenary calendar that was released by the NRL in August and is quite a significant part of the celebrations in Queensland," Cullen told The Sunday Mail.

"I don't know why the AFL wouldn't concede that date. It doesn't make any sense for them to put a game on the same night. It is 100 years to the day that rugby league started in Queensland."

Cullen is confident the traffic management plan for Broncos home games will stand the test.

"We advise stadium management on a daily basis what our ticket sales are and they provide the resources accordingly, so this game won't be any different," he said.

A spokesman for Transport Minister John Mickel said a plan to ease congestion was being formulated but he refused to reveal details.

Translink – the public transport arm of Queensland Transport – provided a vague one-sentence statement when asked by The Sunday Mail what plans were in place to cope with the unprecedented demand on services.

"Translink and its partners are currently in the preliminary stages of planning for these events," the statement said.

Broncos CEO Cullen isn't the sharpest tool in the shed judging by that statement too.

would there be uproar if a tennis game was scheudled up against a swim meet? I think not. Why oh why do the media continue to stir up this crap. You either watch one or the other and neither sport is in competition with each other much as tennis doesn't comepete with swimming etc etc.

Victorian Matches

03/05/08 Geelong SS Sat Day
17/05/08 Carlton TD Sat Night
14/06/08 Bulldogs MCG Sat Day
29/06/08 Melbourne MCG Sun Early
12/07/08 Essendon TD Sat Night
26/07/08 Richmond TD Sat Night

Has anyone noticed that the fixture on AFL website and Lions website now shows the Essendon game at ANZ Stadium instead of Telstra Dome. Has there been a change of name for TD, or does this mean the game is at ANZ (Telstra) Stadium in Sydney? If the latter, then it means just 4 games in Melbourne. Anyone know the answer to this?

I'm not aware of the dome changing names again but i could be wrong. two anz stadiums would be confusing as. but why the hell would the bombers and lions play at the 2nd biggest stadium in aus in sydney??

There was always Telstra Dome and Telstra Stadium. Then before that when Telstra Stadium in Sydney was known as Stadium Australia, there was also Aussie Stadium in Sydney, whch was previously known as the Sydney Football Stadium.

Now there is also two Skilled Stadiums, one in Geelong and one on the Gold Coast..........

Money talks I guess.
