Re: Dust settled. Next move re delistings and picks

It could be Wojo also. Shouldn't be after his year but you never know.
This is the conundrum : how long do you hang on to Wojo, Dasher and Ottens?
History suggests that when the end happens form wise it is swift and irreversable - do you roll the dice and risk them not performing or do you call it early and bring in the youth.
If we don't delist them we need to adopt the Collingwood model -make everyone earn their spot and play the kids and only drop them when they play poorly.
We are in desperate need of a facelift and positive injection of youth , enthusiasm and speed.
Four years at the pinnacle has worn a lot of our guys out - time for change !!

Re: 2011 Geelong list changes

I think our exposed vulnerabilities in the last season will mean that the old & slow will go rather than the zippy nippers.

Sounds good to me :thumbsu:

Agree, that's probably the best option.

To me, if we are to retire, we do the one who's body is most shot, followed by the next, then the next etc, all under the same criteria, hence why wojo would be the last to go, and you end up with the squad with the least number of passengers in it (i.e. guys we love, but who's bodies are not physically capable of applying the necessary pressure to opposition etc)

Signed til end of 2012.

Wouldn't be going anywhere anyway.

Will be here for many years to come.

Re: Dust settled. Next move re delistings and picks

They're probably the ones, plus Milburn.

Where the seventh comes from I don't know.

The 09 draft class are safe, of the 08's, Brown Motlop and Gillies are all rated highly within the club, and Taylor Hunt's almost in the best 22.

Simpson has a contract as does Drum, so that leaves only West and Hogan. Maybe West, although he's had a good year.

Don't know why Milburn and Wojcinski's names keeps coming up; it's clear now they'll go around again. E.g:

Balme said veteran defenders Darren Milburn and David Wojcinski were keen to play on next season and "that will probably happen".

Hogan is approximately zero chance to be delisted.

West must be some chance to want to look elsewhere.

Well Milburn is logical...he's our oldest player and you can't start renewal if you don't start there, surely.

But maybe he will keep going.

Wojo I'd keep.

If Milburn doesn't go though, even if we delist Gamble and West, that would mean 4 picks plus Pods, which is possible, though I still reckon it'll be 5 plus Pods.

You didn't see his performances just before the navicular flared then? Tom has the talent but he lacks confidence. He also needs to get angry and show some mongrel. Fingers crossed the new coach will be able to instill the first. The latter is a much tougher proposition. He's still only young.

Just by the bye, I wouldn't mind seeing him played at CHB in the pre season where there is more opportunity to run straight and hard.

It's logical if you ignore him saying he wants to play on and the club saying he probably will! :p

Renewal is here. It doesn't require pushing Milburn out the door.

Let's hope the club has the strength of purpose demonstrated by Collingwood and sees him (and a few other seniors) as a top up player rather than a walk up start.

I think it's very likely this will be the understanding on which both parties agree to one more year.

Re: Dust settled. Next move re delistings and picks

All 6 + 75 for Pods.

Must go in my opinion.

Milburn
Ottens

May go due to injury

Rooke
Corey

Should go because I am a prick

Milburn - holding up players
Ottens - cooked
Rooke - (injury)
Corey - (injury)
Ling - there is no role for him
Mooney - cooked

4 of the above have to go. Have to. I don't care if we are using pick 9 million.
4 must go from the starting 22.

If the Mooney offer hasn't been lodged it needs to be pulled.

Have I said this enough times over the past 3 weeks yet?:D

If they take a short cut and drop only Gamble, Rooke (through injury) I will be gutted.

We'll lose 9 players from our 1st 22 over the next 2 years if this is the case

Here here AM the time for players getting game's on name and not on merit has passed we need to be plying the best performed players week in week out regardless of who they are and what they have done in the past

Agree. But the key (in our position) is to detect those that have no improvement left and are on the slide - quick or not.

Really like this idea. It give us more flex with only one ruckman. Either him or West

If being a good Centre Half Back has anything to do with genetics then he's a certainty to do well there......he could be the next Glen Jakovich :D

Can someone clarify some of these questions regarding our current rookies?

Ben Johnson's 24 next year. Is he too old to stay on the rookie list? If not, definately keep him on. Averaging 2 goals a game in the twos as a key forward is a decent return. Good insurance.

Adam Varcoe's already been on the rookie list for two years. Do we now have to delist or upgrade? I think him and Motlop will form a great crumbing duo in the forward line in the future. Can we delist and then re-rookie?

As for the others, it seems like we'll delist Ediriwickrama and Allwright and hang on to Weston and Stringer. And we all know who Pods is.

"Balme said veteran defenders Darren Milburn and David Wojcinski were keen to play on next season and "that will probably happen"."

Since when has it become up to the players how long they go for? Show me any players (other than the rare exception) that are happy to retire, they all think they can go on. The Cats need to make some hard decisions for the benefit of the club not individuals.

The Cats have been very good for a number of years but don't stuff up the next 10 years by holding onto guys like Milburn, Wojcinski, Ling, Ottens, Corey, Hunt, etc. and stiffling the development in the younger players for another year, or worst having more leave due to lack of opportunity.

Anyone seriously thinking we are able to have another tilt at the flag next year without Ablett is kidding themselves. The time to inject at least 6 young guys is now, regardless of the short term loss in ladder position.

Any chance of Blake being delisted? They already tried to trade him so he obviously isnt wanted.

Or with him still having 1 year left on his contract does he still take up a spot even if he is delisted?

6 picks + pods
1) Ablett
2) DJ
3) Laidler
4) Gamble
5) Rooke
6) Milburn/Ottens/Ling/Corey/Wojak/Blake/Mooney
7) West (if he walks)

It's likely West hasn't decided and that one of those 7 are still in discussion about their future. I suspect we could use as many as 7 picks (including pods) in worst case scenario but it could also be as little as four as well.
