It was a fantastic crowd at Adelaide Oval today, great to see the Power supporters coming along. Hopefully it is a good sign for the future with the upgrade and move to Adelaide Oval in a couple of years.

Finals Crowds:
2010 - 650,924 (65,092) - This is also the current record for a TOTAL finals crowd

it should be noted that during the years 1968 -1971, there were less finals, but the crowd average was well clear of the 100k mark. The record average for finals crowds is held by 1970.

1971 - 420,279 (105,070)
1970 - 446,988 (111,747)
1969 - 437,221 (109,305)
1968 - 425,727 (106,432)

From 1961 - 1968 average finals crowds were in the 90k + region. (also in 1956)

Where would 2010 sit without the 90k at the GF rematch?

2011 could go close regardless. Optimistic predictions, assuming highest placed teams win each match:
- this week should see at 80k, 70k, 40k and 90k
- assuming a Perth final in week 2 looking at 40k and 70k
- then 80k each for the prelims
- 100k for the final
So roughly 650k again, without a GF replay.

That was a shocking crowd. Two entire sections at either end were empty. I was expecting 85K easily.

We do this every year.

Expect through the roof numbers for finals, yet they always disappoint.
It had very little to do for the rain last night for those sections being empty, and all about the money.

Collingwood fans will show up today and a crowd of 65+ should be there.
Tomorrow will draw an early 80s, but not 90s like has been suggested.

I would have gone (glad I didn't) but all week in the media we were told there was going to be a blizzard and the game was on TV live, so sitting in front of a widescreen TV with an open fire sounded the better option. I definitely would have gone if it hadn't been live on TV and I suppose that goes for many others as well.
I wonder what the TV ratings were.

Given the weather and live tv, the crowd was ok. Given that the general public sections were empty, is it a case of the week one ticket prices being too high?

Will be interested to see where the empty seats are in the other games this week.

As has been said, it's the same every year. People expect these massive crowds to finals, and it rarely meets those expectations. You could always blame high ticket prices (although they're not too bad in the first 2 weeks), but IMO it's more to do with supporter bases not being that high. 2 mid tier clubs, 73k is a decent crowd. You would have had more neutrals in the MCC and AFL members if the weather had of been decent.

I actually think there was a high number of neutrals there last night. AFL members and MCC were pretty full. One problem is a Friday night game for Geelong supporters who live in Geelong. Would be hard for some to be able to get to the game on a Friday night considering the traffic and weather last night.

What I mean is in the regular season these areas are full and it is the afl member and mcc sections with the empty seats. Perhaps fans budget for attending a preliminary and grand final which makes the 50-100 bucks for the first two weeks out of reach.

And the weather would have changed the minds of many who wanted to take kids to the game, it was bloody freezing last night!

From TV it looked like the AFL members was pretty full.

The real shock is how many public seats were empty. So many empty bays. Poor showing by Cats and Hawks fans.

For comparison's sake, other recent week 1 MCG finals crowds:
2010 QF StK v Geel 63,608
2010 QF Coll v WB 66,545
2009 QF Geel v WB 74,007
2009 QF Coll v StK 84,213
2008 QF Haw v WB 76,703
2008 QF Geel v StK 71,653
2007 QF Geel v NM 77,630
2007 EF Coll v Syd 64,645
2006 EF Melb v StK 67,528
2006 EF WB v Coll 84,284

So, last night was, indeed, ballpark. Especially considering it's battling for neutrals along with three other Melbourne-based games.
