The AFL crowds maybe down a bit but are still miles ahead of RL on all KPIs except Foxtel and that should change next year.

From todays SMH/ Sun Herald.

Numbers up for NRL but crowds a concern

WITH rugby league preparing to negotiate the biggest television deal in the sport's history, memberships are rising, pay TV records are being broken and while slightly fewer people are going through the turnstiles, the crowds are relatively strong compared to those for rival sports.

The NRL is finalising its annual ''state of the game'' report and The Sun-Herald has obtained the preliminary findings.

The key indicators include:

❏ Crowds are expected to finish down by about 1.5 per cent on last year's figures;

❏ Average ratings on Fox Sports are up 16.4 per cent, with league notching 63 of the most-watched programs on pay TV so far this year;

❏ Memberships are up 29 per cent, to a total of 171,811;

❏ An increase in the number of female volunteers of 10,000;

❏ A 13 per cent increase in the number of children playing weekend rugby league, to 143,000.

Will be interesting to see how the Foxtel deal will impact crowds. AFL has more of an attendance culture than the NRL to be sure, but I expect we'll see an adjustment of sorts with the new TV schedule.

NRL crowds are definitely a concern, particularly in Sydney where crowds struggle even when the opponent is also Sydney team. That said, Melbourne has broken crowd and membership records this year, the Broncos, Cowboys and Warriors are also pulling respectable numbers.

There's room in this country for two strong codes, would be a shame to see AFL grow at the NRL's expense, or vice versa.

Round 22 crowds

Carlton v Hawthorn (Docklands) 52,052
Gold Coast v Adelaide (Carrara) 16,168
West Coast v Essendon (Subiaco) 38,253
Collingwood v Brisbane (MCG) 47,788
North Melbourne v Fremantle (Docklands) 17,581
Sydney v St Kilda (Stadium Australia) 25,025
Port Adelaide v Western Bulldogs (Football Park) 14,169
Melbourne v Richmond (MCG) 36,321
If the AFL had decided to play the Hawthorn/Carlton game at the MCG instead of Etihad they would have got 85,000 instead of 52,000, and had they played the Swans v Saints at the SCG instead of ANZ they would have got 35,000 instead of 25,000. That would have meant a respectable 285,000 for the round instead of 242,000.

Round 22 crowds

Carlton v Hawthorn (Docklands) 52,052 but 80,000 plus at the G
Gold Coast v Adelaide (Carrara) 16,168
West Coast v Essendon (Subiaco) 38,253 but many more if they had a bigger stadium
Collingwood v Brisbane (MCG) 47,788
North Melbourne v Fremantle (Docklands) 17,581
Sydney v St Kilda (Stadium Australia) 25,025 Over 30k at the SCG
Port Adelaide v Western Bulldogs (Football Park) 14,169
Melbourne v Richmond (MCG) 36,321

3 matches could have drawn more.

Absolutely effing nobody at the Gabba this evening for the Lions/ Eagles match, it was a bit of a 'take back' to the good (bad) ol' days of the Brisbane Bears

It didnt help with the fact the game was scheduled directly against the Tri Nations match between Australia and the All Blacks

It absolutely murdered the AFL *cough* 'gathering' out there tonight

and lets not talk about the TV ratings! The Lions/ Eagles match would have rated even worse on television, even I was watching the Tri Nations :rolleyes:

Yep, 6 hours of rain before the game,13500 turned up.
Funny thing is it still had a bigger crowd than any of the mobile wrestling
(league) that was on sat night.

Brisbane's average home crowd this year is 21,158, which is better than 14 of the 16 NRL clubs.

If the Lions have worries, it's frightening to think of the issues the NRL has.

TBF both the Broncos and Cowboys would probably average higher than that, not sure about the GC.

It's the NSW RL teams that let the NRL down.

Actually, the Cowboys average just 14,000 per home game. The Broncos have the best home average in the NRL but only just reach 30,000.

Meanwhile, Collingwood's home average for this year of 59,000+ (which will probably surpass 60,000 after next week) is higher than the largest crowd for a single home and away game in Rugby League history.

It's not the NSW teams, it's the entire sport that's a let down.

Now THAT is a horrifying stat. With all the "invasion" nonsense the Sydney media is spouting, and the furore it's kicking up with League fans... you would THINK they'd, you know, turn up to games?

Yeh yeh, as soon as the AFL has an inadequate attendance, they decide to go on the defensive and bash an NRL crowd because thats the ONLY form of defense they can do

Effing pathetic I tell ya! How single minded and one dimensional are you neandethals? No wonder we call you all Victards!

Collingwood is going to draw in 89000 next week? I hope they all brought pillows. so they can fall have a nanna nap, then wake up and still find out that the same game is still going on

[/not making friends, and has no intention of doing so]

Not any more pathetic than you coming to a forum dedicated to AFL crowds to crow about ONE AFL team having a low attendance. And Collingwood facing Geelong will probably have 80+ - what with it being 1v2, last round of the season. We dont bash NRL here because ours are down, we bash them because they are practically irrelevant as a statistic.

The last place an NRL advocate should be posting is anywhere near an AFL forum on crowds of all things.

Round 23 crowds

Fremantle v Collingwood (Subiaco) 31,985
Geelong v Sydney (Kardinia) 25,900
Hawthorn v Western Bulldogs (MCG) 42,198
Brisbane v West Coast (Gabba) 13,500
St Kilda v North Melbourne (Docklands) 35,848
Adelaide v Richmond (Football Park) 38,023
Melbourne v Gold Coast (MCG) 21,534
Essendon v Port Adelaide (Docklands) 34,849

The nearly 26,000 at Geelong has to be one of the biggest crowds there for a long time.

The Cats seem to average about 22 - 23,000 in recent times.

The AFL has never "gone on the defensive" and bashed NRL crowds, how is that defense anyway? If they wanted to "defend" a small crowd they would blame the rain and the fact there was a competing game on the same night which isn't "bashing" the NRL at all you neanderthal (helps if u spell it right).

This renders your 2nd paragraph to be irrelevent ramblings that dont make sense, you color-less plain amazonian! (yes i can say a bunch of insults that dont make any sense as well, two of which also mean the same thing).

Im sure the "we" you are referring to is no doubt delighted they have been brought down to your level, and im sure they ALL use this idiotic slander like you. [/ im not here to be smart, just prove how unintelligent you are]
Which is humerously illustrated in the last paragraph, with mistakes such as "brought" and "still found out" and if ur going to go to the trouble of using puncuation, dont use it at the level a 13 year old would.

I love how RL fans brag about the broncos crowds! They are a single team in a heartland city of 2million people! The fact they average even lower than the average AFL home and away game by 6000 is a disgrace.

On the Lions crowd, of course it was low. They're near bottom on the ladder. The game was in torrential rain. Yet they are still averaging far higher home crowds than the storm who are top.

Go back to LU. The TV ratings thread awaits you.

Nice round number on the Bris/WC crowd suggests it's an estimate rather than an actual figure. Inflated slightly perhaps?

Biggest since cats v swans last year, which was 25,970 (which was the biggest since redevelopments).
I think the Gold Coast game a couple of weeks ago was notching 25,000 aswell

Great crowd in Adelaide and the Essendon game. Not great in Brisbane.
