We will have 2 consecutive picks in the first round, 1 pick in the second round, and two consecutive picks in the third round dependent on our final ladder position. Add in our father /son pick for Hunter, dependent on whether any clubs challenge his selection, which could be in 1st round, second round 3rd round or not at all.
Best case if we Finnish 3rd last we get:
2 consecutive first round picks 5 and 6.
1 2nd round pick( about 25)
2 3rd round picks ( in the forties/early fifties)
Hunter F/S last pick (unlikely but possible.
Hunter and possibly Will Beasly may be challenged by other clubs, but unlikely considering there are maybe 3 other F/S picks better than our pick ( Viney, Daniher, Stewart(Collingwood) )
Also best case would be if we finished last from a draft perspective

Beasly isn't going into the draft, i believe he has gone to rowing from post on this topic.

According to Knightmares Draft preview and some other googled sources he is playing and a prospect this year, if people KNOW different please clarify.

Thanks Sharkey

From your reading and what you have heard so far, how deep would you say the talent in this years draft is? 40 - 50 players deep of real quailty?

cheers

Yeah its about that, maybe even 10 spots deeper but still evolving. Hunter is probably early 2nd round but rising at this stage and Beasly still speculative but probably 3rd round at best.
Hard to judge as the majority of talent of the three previous drafts was decimated due to the ability of the two expansion clubs to pick the eyes out of it with the 17 yo draft selections before the rest of the comp had a look in.

The depth question of this years draft compared to previous years is one I would like looked at by the Phantom Draft people if possible.

Gilbee, Hooper, Moles and Mulligan are in a lot of strife. One or two more will probably need to go as well.

All the commentators bang on about the importance of a group of similar aged players coming through at the same time, in order to develop a premiership team. Will the Dogs chase another pick in the top 30 and can anyone identify trade bait to get that pick?

I can't think of anyone aside from Minson. IMO Minson is unlikely to be part of our next top four team (mainly due to the timeframe). So does trading Will leave us too exposed in 2013...? Roughead, Cordy, Campbell are all coming on nicely. Would we get a second rounder for Will, from someone like Hawthorn, Richmond or even Geelong or Collingwood?

We tried to trade Minson last year, no one wanted him!

Wrong.
We tried to trade him 2 trade week's ago.
Gold Coast were interested, but their coach wanted Fraser while Clayton wanted Minson. Coach won of course. Would have been the catalyst (i.e. freeing up cap space) that we needed in order to land Andrew Walker who was open to coming to us.
For memory Port Adelaide were also interested as well.

If we were to trade him, and I think we will look at it if Campbell keeps impressing, we may do him and a pick for a second (not outright for a 2nd) i.e. Minson and 4th rounder for 2nd rounder

from an outsiders view i think doggies have to tank this year,

succesfull teams rely on a good rotation of midfileders and if the doggies tank this year and can pick up 2 top 5 gun mids and in 3-4 years i could see you guys having an incredible midfield.

dane swan and gaz jr are arguably peaking right now at age 27 and 28, so in 2-3 years griffen and cooney(hoping his knees hold up) will be that age,
combine that with libba, wallis, dalhaus, higgins, picken(could morph into a genuine mid like scott selwood) and a few first round draft picks could be a deadly midfield.

grant and cordy will over time put on weight and become genuine forward threats, jones aswell will improve with time and you guys could possibly get another gun forward in the draft.

i think the libba/wallis bargain you guys got longterm could be gold (and possibly cordy/hunter aswell) just as geelong's f/s got em where they are.

roughhead is looking the goods and down back markovic, sherman, williams and wood are young and can only get better.

we really have to capitalise this draft big time. We simply cant afford any mistakes. And i reckon that we shouldn't pick our father son players if there is genuinely someone better before hand as it could backfire.

Maybe we should call the other teams bluffs on Hunter and Beasley and hope that they slide through to the appropriate numbered picks instead of having to nominate early round picks like what happened with Cordy and Wallis etc?

Agreed, we need to quietly tank. It's the system the AFL has set up.

I like the Tiger

Both Cordy and Wallis were highly rated.

Wallis especially and everyone thought he was deserving of the selection.

I agree with the rest of your post though.

Not all the elite players make an impact the first time they set foot on the footy field. Anyone remember Swan's first game? How about Pendlebury? Remember when Collingwood made the finals and didnt' have one single AA from their list?

Wallis will be a great player for us, he just needs some time, and a little less expectation.

We don't need to "tank"...the natural course of the season should see us end up anywhere from 16th to 13th and get us 2 picks inside top 10.

We are unlikely to have to use a first round pick on Hunter, that would require GWS, GC or Melbourne wanting to grab him. Picks inside top 10 could get us anything and sometimes you can get very lucky.

I'd rather make the 8 with the kids starring than end up near the bottom. That would be a terrific sign for the future. Great players can be got anywhere in the draft.

Pick a team each week to win, develop the kids and do it all while fostering a winning culture. If we pick up a couple of great kids in the draft then fantastic.

If the ladder remains the same as it is now, our first pick would be 7 or 8, as Melbourne have a their Scully pick, not sure about GWS or Gold Coast as the priority pick has now been scrapped. Would this be high enough to snag Mason Shaw?

Any ideas on how the final ladder will look? Would we beat Brisbane both times, what about Norf, would we beat them again? Any other games that we could win that would put us higher than Richmond or Norf (I don't think we will beat Richmond).

To be perfectly honest, Id love picks 7 and 8 - prefer not to make the finals this year. Heresy, I know, but there you go, Im being honest.

I see this year as a stepping stone where the enjoyment is coming from seeing us master the new gameplan, and blooding new kids in ready for a full assault on 2013.

So Im hoping that Richmond and North continue to win a enough games so that we can also win games and retain our ladder position.

Tank? No way - we keep up our take no prisoners apporach and try to beat every oppposition we face. Give youngsters plenty of ground time with an expansive selection rotation policy? yes indeed.

.

Brisbane won't pass on him as they desperately need a big forward forward with brown coming to end, so no it won't be high enough.

Agreed, I reckon we can finish 13th with 9 wins this year. That would probably be perfect, as it'll mean our kids play reasonably well, but still guarantees those picks 7 and 8 that we want.

I reckon our main danger to getting Mason Shaw, is that Brisbane might snaffle him.

Although they also need outside mids...

I'm wondering if we would be thinking about how we can upgrade one of the picks.

If we really, really rate one of the kids who will likely go before our first selection (maybe Mason, maybe someone else) we are well placed to trade a player or pick to upgrade and get an even higher first pick.

Would we rather picks 6 and 7, or picks 3 and 11 for example. Or trade a reasonable player to end up with picks 3 and 7?

If we really want a top 4 player, this will be a good year for us to try to secure him.

why is everyone so keen on mason shaw?, I just looked at a thread and Shaw was eligible for mini draft selection, if he was any good GWS would have selected him and auctioned him off to the highest bidder, yet GWS didnt even bother which means he isnt rated.

Could just be another Panos/Vardy rated to be top 5 by bigfooty pundits but come draft day, they are lucky to be picked up.

Mason Shaw has 7 cm, and 5 kgs on Panos right now. Has been kicking goals for fun, and rated clearly as best key forward in this year's draft.

Use our highest pick on a FF sorry to Redpath,Panos,Skinner who i do not think will be an AFL player, so we need to move forward even with a kid at FF we can one hell of an impact with Grant, Jones, Cordy, Roughy, Dal, Dick all with another preseason . Next we should definitely have our eyes on a good outside midfielder I'm sick of the slow midfield i remember when we used to be nearly the quickest team in the AFL just constant run and push no we are slow insiders and like Boyd just boom it out and it turns out ineffective, inside and outside needs to be evened out. Backline honestly i think is gravy,

Well, the top 3 key forwards in the draft would be:

1. Mason Shaw (top 3-4);

2. Jake Stringer (top 3-4)

3. Spencer White (1st rounder)

However, I would prefer the Club draft Lachlan Plowman with its first pick.
