On Fort he is very much a project player. I remember watching him in a finals game and he was quite good. Very good tap ruckman, athletic and can take a good mark. However, I'd back Nahas against him in a wrestle. Very skinny, lanky, I think we should pass and go for a safer option if we do want a ruckman.

You wouldn't need to be that great to beat him - just good enough to be able to hold the Fort.

This is the part that is of concern for me - Do we pick & focus on a particular player too much that it clouds our judgment when it comes to selection time - Do we become so Bias towards that player that we fail to see the greener pastures that may be over the yonder

Yes, I have felt this for a good while, too centralised, not seeing the woods for the trees.

Vlastuins kicking worries me a little , bit to up and down, he is no hodge with the kicking thats for sure.

I rate Macrae, and Mayes clearly ahead as well as others not worrying about Grundy, simply not convinced

The kids he dominated likely won't get drafted though...

The other rucks that seem in contention are Fort who didn't play and Hannath/Currie (mature age recruits)
Longer did ;)

I don't think too many people compare him to NicNat, they just suggest he's as good a prospect as NicNat was at that point of his career. Obviously their traits are completely different. NicNat and Vickery debuted in the same game, so it wouldn't be anything ground-breaking to follow in their footsteps.

I'm another who is happy to take him at 9, but don't care if he spends a season or more at Coburg. I also expect whoever we draft at 9 to do an initiation at Coburg, unless something dramatic happens in the pre-season.

If we take Vlastuin, what would have to happen for him to play in the first six rounds, say?
One of our starting mids would have to go down, or maybe one of Ellis/Conca/Edwards/Nahas/Knights. Then, does he get a gig before the likes of Helbig/Arnot/O'Hanlon?

If someone like Arnot gets off to a flier in Jan/Feb, Valstuin may not even see AFL this year.

Won't it be awesome when we get to this stage. Have a team / squad strong enough that a freshly drafted young kid won't be able to walk straight in.

Therefore if whoever we select is spending most of the season at Coburg please let Grundy be avaliable. Yes we need a tuck replacement but who would we struggle without more Tuck or Maric????

I'm happy with either Grundy or Vlastuin but like someone said a week or so back I'd hate to think we would pass on Grundy if avaliable.

Pretty much how I see it, although I'd not be surprised if FJ goes Lonergan over Vlastuin.

All you Vlas haters, how much of him have you actually seen? Any more than a highlights package?
Tipping the answer is no, which is the same as me which is why I don't pretend to be an expert like a lot of YouTube recruiters like to do...

You wouldn't be happy with a Lenny Hayes type character at the club for the next 12 years?!?

I would be extremely happy.
As I stated in my post, I think he is the right fit for our team.
Some people are arguing that he isn't the best available at pick 9 and I would also agree with this.
However, I like that our recruiting staff are picking players based on character more so than actual footballing ability. Think it's the way to go.

Not sure there are heaps of haters tbh.

ignoring character it would be good if we get a Lenny Hayes type footballer, but I have question marks Vlas is that, will be good, can't see the star quality though

His Combine results will probably see him be lucky to get drafted.

Top 97% in 3km trial.
Top 79% in repeat sprints.
Top 99% in V02 max.
10.5 beep.
Top 87% in agility.
Top 80% in all sprints.
Top 77% in standing jump.

There'd want to be a reason for that.

You can't really get a fair look at these traits from watching highlight clips on the Internet though can you?

I'm not a Vlastuin hater nor would i not support the clubs decision, but its things you don't see or know that concern me. Doesn't appear to have speed or a tank and without combine results I have question marks over being a top 10 pick. Seems to be straight ahead sort of player, haven't seen elite evasion skills. Haven't observed him kicking any goals. Contrast Lonergan who answers many of these questions.

I think he will be good for us, just get the feeling that the RFC recruiters are playing it quite safe with this one.
Hopefully he turns out to be an absolute jet as opposed to just a solid footballer.
I have faith!

Yes you can. In fact if a recruiter can't weed out possibles and probables from player vision they are in the wrong game.

Number one criterion is how they play the game what you see, then stats/how prolific, quality/effectiveness, polish etc... Vlas does not move like Hayes , he isn't Hayes, still might be whatever who knows might become a star yet but he is no Hayes in the way he plays with body movement , poise etc..

You understand what a highlight package is dont you?
You can't correctly judge a players attributed from a computer chair

People are missing my point. My point isn't that he's a spud, it's that he's ready made to come in and be in our best 22 as a 2nd ruck/CHF. He's far from that.

As a second ruck he'd play forward and he didn't kick a goal. Games where he played first ruck he couldn't get near the footy.

I have two points here.

1. He's not ready made and likely won't get many (any) games over Ivan or Tyrone.

2. He's not clearly ahead of others in the top 10 and that's the reason GWS won't take him top 3 and he'll likely last till the teens.

Look if you want to be cautious go for Vlas- serviceable. but if you want x factor go for menzel or grundy if avail. Not many times a kid like grundy comes avail- he is a bloody ruck- how many rucks have we got? the russian is all- and he can also go fwd and kick goals- those of you that think vickery is this are way of the mark now- vickery is a goal kicker (has to pull his finger out- prepared to give him another year) who can sometimes jump in the ruck. This kid has it all. he is specialized and flexible. for my 20 cents worth I would go with him if avail. we have mids lined up at picks 2 and 3. do it tigers!no regrets ( I have had a few!)

Yes you can, remember it is not about the highlight but how they go about it, move their body etc.. For example some can mark from all angles like Garner, some can't, some bodies let them do this , some that, some can't,

we are not talking about apples and apples here!!

Coaches make moves from the stands, they don't ask the dna of each player what to do next do they?

I don't:( in terms of the attributes being valued, good luck to Vlastuin:thumbsu:, but if this is the basis of a trend we will make finals but never break the top 4 IMO through lack of game breakers!!!
