Piss weak from the top 3 SANFL teams to once again bail on this competition

Well done to Port Adelaide for jumping at the chance to represent our state... same can be said for Westies and South

Port Adelaide went pretty well last year winning 2 games and losing the 3rd to Claremont

Interesting to note that we lost by 17 points and in that game we only had a couple of AFL listed players while Claremont stacked their team with current and ex AFL listed players

Thought we did pretty well to be honest....

Dont write off the SANFL clubs in this...

Must say (even as a Boroughs fan) it was a good effort by Williamstown to win the Foxtel Cup and make the VFL Grand Final.

Also, Williamstown rested some of their key players during the Foxtel Cup.

So really, Williamstown has proven, there are no excuses for those top SANFL clubs.

One word for them... WEAK

All the AFL listed players helped:rolleyes:

I hope the mighty West Perth do well in this comp, I am sure they will get through the early rounds, they have recruited well and now seem front runners to get Leon Davis which of course will be a bonus.
How they go against the top VFL sides is a different story.

Great comp this for exposure for the second tier level.

That's just the Claremont team, best junior club in the country=AFL listed players.
It's not like they went out and recruited has beens and fringe AFL players, it's where they're from.

Yes, because the team was clearly full of seasoned AFL players.

The most experienced players for us in the Grand Final were Josh Hill who is flaky as all hell and Dylan Addison who is an honest battler. Outside of those two, nearly every single Bulldogs listed player was a 1st to 3rd year player with only two first rounders playing (Howard and Wallis).

Professional players against part timers.

I don't get this aggressive SANFL side basing because the majority of SANFL clubs have declined invitations in the past 2 seasons to participate in the Foxtel Cup.

SANFL clubs have made a decision based on what they've thought are in the best interests of their club. It's clear they see the Foxtel Cup as nothing more than a Mickey Mouse competition that has no positive impact on their club.

We saw last year that the Foxtel Cup was little more than an afterthought in most peoples eyes, even in participating club supporters eyes with abysmal attendances in the stand alone matches. With most games now relegated to Saturday mornings, I can see the interest levels dropping even more.

Funny how you are a Centrals supporter and bagging the Foxtel Cup. Personally I enjoyed the Foxtel Cup- it rated better than expected (it beat rugby league Toyota Cup at times) and was never designed to be well attended. The name "Foxtel Cup" must suggest that it was for TV purpose.

Pathetic of those SANFL teams not to get involved-why not use it to blood a couple of promising youngsters., and give their players a great experience.

IMO the state leagues and the participating clubs should have 2 goals, and they are both important.

1. win the premiership

2. development of players-
This includes assisting young talented players to get drafted to AFL.
It also includes helping young players develop into good people as well (helping with employment/discipline etc)

The top SANFL clubs need to get over themselves and understand goal number 2. The foxtel cup can help players get drafted and give their players a good experience. I would have loved the opportunity to travel interstate and play on an AFL ground on Foxtel.

Will the likes of Centrals ever see the full picture?

So tell me how the Foxtel Cup achieves either of these objectives.

Nope.

Because Centrals like being the bully in their school yard.

The simple, unavoidable fact is, they *could* be embarrassed by one of the WAFL or VFL clubs, thus supporters, sponsors and media would see their 'achievements' in a lesser light.

Then how come Norwood, the Eagles, Glenelg and (last season) Sturt have declined to participate?

Why is Centrals being singled out? They're not the only club declining invites.

SANFL is 'sure' they're the No2 comp, and so long as they don't actually compete with the other comps, they can retain that delusion.

As for developing other players, why do that when the AFL will just steal (promote) them?

Remember this is the comp that bleeds their AFL teams to ensure the SANFL teams have a greater salary cap than they can afford internally and thus boost the self importance of their local league.

The fact that our only KPD on the day was James Mulligan kinda points out the fact that shit players can be full timers.

Bag out your shit players, but almost all of the players running around in state leagues are shit compared to regular AFL players. And those on an AFL list are generally going to be the better shit players than those not on an AFL list. Not always - look at Port Melbourne as an example. But they managed to attract some of the best non listed players in Victoria, probably because they're not affiliated.

But that's why the VFL is the highest standard league outside the AFL - you can't add over 100 AFL listed players to a state league every week and not have a substantial improvement in standard.

I thought there was going to be a south pacific team in it next year what happened to that?

I hope they bring in an international all-stars team next year. Would be great for the promotion of the game.

Thats not strictly true either. Most players not on senior lists at an AFL club are development players. SANFL/WAFL clubs/Pt Melbourne have a more natural progression, players promoted from juniors over time, experienced talent, and in a lot of case, retired/resigned/fired AFL talent. So a VFL club isnt necessarily going to be of a higher standard, but of a higher potential standard. Theres a difference.

Most WAFL clubs are full of guys who weren't good enough for AFL.
Didn't have the talent, the drive, the fitness etc.

There are one or two guys every season (like Krakouer and Priddis) who are AFL standard but the majority are inferior to professional players- especially given that their main concentration is on their day job.

A shame that it seems only the VFL and WAFL care about this comp. Hopefully the SANFL sides give a good account of themselves this time.

Port were a few kicks away from the grand final last time!?!?!?
