Can't believe people are squabbling over how much we would pay him. You pay the best what ever they want. Goddard is well worth it. People who think otherwise obviously don't watch much of St.Kilda
...and you always pay overs to get the best players over to your club. I certainly imagine that the Dees players are not quibbling about Mitch Clarke's pay after this season and he certainly isn't is Goddard's league. Money should not be the deciding factor when we finished an embarrassing 11th.

If Goddard had been on our list since he was drafted at #1 since day #1 he'd be on a large salary anyway because hes a gun, and a marquee player. paymemymoney.

Mitch Clark was playing out of his skin before injury, so yeah, the Dees would be happy about his pay packet :D

Assuming that by "what ever they want" you mean the minimum necessary to get him signed, and not a dollar more, sure. What ever they want though, and you park yourself on a route that ends with the cap needlessly full, or blown.

FWIW, media reports suggest Hawthorn talked Burgoyne down from an initial demand of $750k a year to something around $500k.

If we have any chance to get Goddard to Essendon then we should grab it with both hands, front load his contract while we have the room and pat ourselves on the back for making an excellent aquisition.

Even if we made no other moves during trade week I would be more than happy with this one.

Thinking about it, we might only need one more gun mid/utility. Most teams only tag one player and that player a majority of the time is Stanton. Whilst Goddard is no Watson with handling a tag, he'd offer plenty if he was, e.g. Kick outs, flexibility to roll forward, midfield. If anyone can remember Stanton's form over the first 7-8 rounds you know that it was elite. All of a sudden we'd have that or those players that will pop up if another is tagged. The permutations are endless

Watson tagged, play him forward and roll Myers & Goddard into the midfield
Goddard tagged, Stanton and Zaka escape tag and rack them up
Vice versa with Stanton or Zaka tag. Could push Stanton back or Zaka
If Myers, Howlett, Heppell, Dempsey and Browne can develop and Hocking can return to form, we all of a sudden have a midfield capable of going with the best in the comp. Still might be lacking one gut busting strong kicking outside midfielder.

The Kav!!!

I guess if Goddard revisits 2009 form, Watson does what Watson does, Stanton keeps up his 2012 first half of the year, Zaka has a breakout season in the mould of Beams/Dangerfield, Myers stays injury free we would be a serious tilt.

Goddard is just using the Essendon offer to get another year out of the saints, I can't see him moving on especially with him being tipped as the next captain.

Could it be possible that the saints want him to go via free agency, they would receive pick 13 or 14 in the draft which gives them 2 1st round draft picks, not a bad way to start rebuilding your list while the aging stars still have a year or two in them.
All saints need to do is offer 3 years + 1 as option and he will sign.

If the bombers are really serious about Goddard they should hit him with 850-900 and make him move.

THIS! Anyone who doesn't think Goddard would be worth whatever it takes is kidding themselves. I just don't get it. He's in the prime of his career. Sometimes, even on BigFooty, you have to realise that being young isn't better than being good!

I wouldn’t go over $550k for Goddard.

That said, I realise my opinion of him differs wildly from most people’s. IMO he’s been average – good for 2 years now, and is turning 29 next year (not gonna get better). I don’t even rate him in St Kilda’s best 5 at the moment.

He has showed brilliance, but it was 2 years ago, and lasted for 2 seasons of his 10 in the league.

But I get that no-one agrees!

Turning 28 next year. We get that you don't rate him, no need to embellish his age.

Would tick so many boxes for us.

Not only is he an elite player who could make a dramatic impact on our performance, but he would also be proof that Essendon has finally decided to get real and aggressively target the best.

Agree. He has already said he wants to be a Saint forever.

Because Grant Thomas just isn't interested in the way things are done. By normal people.

All this bullshit about co-captaincy and rotating captaincy... let's hope we never indulge in such nonsense.

No co-captains have ever held the premiership cup aloft. In fact, as far as I'm aware, only one set of co-captains have ever played in a GF.

Maybe we are not in such a bad position to secure Caddy. Surely GC have to get over their obsession with picks and look to sure up its side where it can (and where needed).

Our ability to trade 10 year KPD has to put us on par with clubs that can offer first round picks because GC definitely need a KPD that can step in straight away but still grow with the rest of their side. I wonder how optimistic they will be about Pears' future capabilities.

GC must be a list management blunder in 2012 - They knocked back Hooker and then were forced to trade in matthew Warnock - Who did fairly well - But Hooker is a better player.

I think you'd find Monfries would be on significantly more that $250k. Was the financial beneficiary of our hopelessness through the late 2000's. Between Monfries, McVeigh and Prismall, i'd be shocked if there wasn't $1 - $1.3m freed up.

You are right - Don't forget that Monfries is a RFA - which means that he is in the top 10% of wage earners at EFC - So you think he would be on 300K+.

Is it right that if Stkilda do not much our offer that he has to than come to Essendon? be it 50k or 200k or how does the extra year work?

Im pretty happy with Kavanagh and Hooker, would have lost both of those had we picked Caddy. Lets just hope Kavangh becomes a better prospect and we can laugh at Mufassa and any other BF joke poster on the trades thread in years to come. Had we lost Hooker last year i can assure you our focus would be a key back instead of a midfielder like Goddard, Moloney, Boak ect

I said that figure, and I’m not kidding myself or anybody else... it was in response to what I thought he was worth. I know we’d have to pay $700k +, which is superstar money – which Goddard absolutely is not imo.

I think it’s enlightening that even with the onset of free agency and the related anxiety, the Saints, who know him best, are standing firm on their $600k, 3 years. It’s what he’s worth.

I stand by the ridiculous over-rating of him in this thread and elsewhere. He’s not the tonic many people think he is, his very presence does not make us a premiership contender, just like the loss of him wouldn’t destroy St Kilda – and they know it.

He’s a bloody good footballer who would slot in nicely to our side for the next few years. He’s not, however, the rarefied sort we need to mortgage the joint for, no matter how long it’s been since we’ve been able to feel like we’re movers an’ shakers in trade week.

Well thank God(dard) you aren't in charge then..
Firstly, we have the cash and don't have to mortgage anything to get him..
Second, he is a gun footballer and at 27 is in his prime....
Do you remember Bryan Wood? Was a great get from Richmond in his prime years....I want another one..
We never get expensive toys, I want one....

If people are offering Cloke $1mil a year and Scully is on huge coin, then Goddard is worth at least 800k a year, plus we get him for nothing...Yes nothing, this free agency rule is bizarre, let's be the first to exploit it and get revenge for Barry Davis....
