2013 National Draft

Pretty happy with the draft. As far as needs based goes it really cleans up our lack of outside players. Impey and Byrne-Jones with ability to defend is a great bonus. have been keen on Byrne-Jones for about 3 months as a small defender. Impey gives us what i thought we need although fair to say he wasn't my top pick i have warmed to him. Harvey still mystifies me a bit port must be pretty confident he can improve 10 fold and he doesn't really fit a need (really tall marking FF), would have prefered a CHF. here's hoping Hartlett, Gray, Broadbent, Ebert get to play in the positions they are suppose to now.

I'm sure Richo was part of the collaboration too and I suspect he did let Port's first choice slide. I'm sure Port let the Kolojashnij rumour out to force Gold Coast's hand early - they were linked to Impey too. But they outsmarted everyone, maybe even themselves. :p

Port Adelaide fills needs
Speaking to portadelaidefc.com.au, Parker noted a close collaboration with senior coach Ken Hinkley and list manager Jason Cripps had ensured the Power's stocks were replenished with required position players.

"Jason and I spent a lot of time with Kenny and the other coaches working out what we needed and we think we've got some pretty versatile and clever players in this draft," said Parker.
Port Adelaide fills needs

I'm happy with the diversity of the mix of players and needs they fill. Hope the big Broadview ranga dominates! :thumbsu:

so no battersby , hourigan , wilson or conlon drafted?

would love any of them in the rookie draft.

Battersby thought he was going to get picked up also templeton, combe and Reynolds didn't get picked up either, wouldn't mind any of them as a rookie. With picking smalls I think that hinkley and co must have huge belief in the depth of our midfield group; newton young ah chee etc so they didn't really see a need to pick up another mid

Why did we need more small mids? They're like tall mids but easier to catch out on height.

You might as well ask "Why do we need players that can kick well?" or "Why do we need players that can take contested marks?".

Because they are the better choice for AFL football.

How many sides have more player 180cm or less than we do now?

The current premiers?

Jarman Impey- speed and aggression- Geoff Parker couldn't believe he was still available

Mitch Harvey-good mark and kicks goals- has upside

Darcy Byrne-Jones- Kevin Sheehan rates him-X factor

Karl Amon- great kick and work rate

Welcome to Port, may you all be 200 game players.

Jarman Impey- speed and aggression- Geoff Parker couldn't believe he was still available

Recruiter spin 101 - 'I rated player X, Y & Z I picked today as the three best kids alive ever!'

Darcy Byrne-Jones- Kevin Sheehan rates him-X factor

Shifter rates everyone. I legitimately haven't heard him say a bad word about any draftee ever.

Polec better be good.
pick 34 could have been used on Nankervis and 14 on McCarthy.

It's gonna be hard to watch if Polec doesn't deliver and McCarthy does. But then again would Kenny and Parker have taken him if we still had pick 14??

Once we drafted Matt Rendell's nephew statements like this were inevitable. ;)

Chad Wingard at 6,
Ollie Wines at 7
Jake Neade at part of pick 29
are genuine I can't believe he was still available/got him for that moments.

I doubt Impey will be like Parker said, but lets hope I'm wrong.

Impey and DBJ are the two high ceiling prospects IMO.
Harvey just has Wade Champion written all over him for mine. Not that I've seen his play any more than the 3 min package ;)
Amon reminds me of Irons.
If we've secured two pacy HBF/wingmen, I can live with that

The need for speed is the theme for this draft. Impey tackles hard and could be double trouble for the opposition along with Neade.

Power coach Ken Hinkley has earmarked him for defence to provide some more run-and-carry to a side which is starting to ooze class.
"He'll start for us in the back half, that's the reason we got him,'' Port recruiting manager Geoff Parker said after snaring Impey with the first of the club's four selections.
"He'll develop further up the ground as he matures but we really like him in the defensive role.''
Port clearly felt the need for speed, drafting quick defender Darcy Byrne-Jones from Oakleigh Chargers (No. 52) and outsider midfielder Karl Amon (68).
"Both Darcy and Karl were in the top 10 at the Draft Combine for speed and were pretty high up for endurance as well,'' Parker said.
Port used its other selection to boost its tall forward stocks, selecting North Adelaide's Mitch Harvey, the nephew of current Collingwood and former Crows recruiting manager Matt Rendell.
"We were hoping to get one tall forward somewhere along the way and it was great to get Mitch because with his pedigree he was there for us to pick,'' Parker said.
"Jay Schulz is a fantastic player and we are hope he is with us for a while yet but he's getting on a bit so we needed to bring someone else in.''

I don't feel well after this draft.
We will be talking about this in 3-4 years time saying how much of a mistake/masterstroke trading for Polec was.

Yeh, more pressure on Polec with no slider reaching us at #21. Acres, so close!

Reasonably happy with the draft although I would've preferred one less pacy outside small and a genuine inside mid instead. Maybe rookie that Tsitas kid? Had we taken Hewett at #21, I'd have been well satisfied.

I like tall midfielders, but ever since Scott Pendlebury has come along, the obsession with them has gone way over the top. Bar Watson and Pendlebury, the vast majority of great midfielders are still shorter.

Judd, Josh Kennedy, Mundy, Fyfe, Ryan O'Keefe, Bartel, Corey - All grand finalists or premiership midfielders all 187+.

On the flipside.

Cousins, Wojinski, Chapman, Mitchell, Sewell, Bird, Jetta, Jack (did not realise he was only 178cm), Hill, Bateman - Premiership mids 180cm +/-1-2cm

That will be pretty sad considering guys like Renouf, Daniel Stewart, Hitchcock, Blee got games this year

Renouf, Stewart, and Blee all played to plug holes... Hitchcock got used because we lacked outside pace. But now we have White, Polec, and Flynn its a different story especially if Hitchcock only suffers from Aami Stadium-hamstring-itis.

Unless Butcher, Shaw and Schulz are injured Harvey shouldn't play. And I don't think a couple of undersized in height (imp) and weight (byrne and amon) will be able to fit into our team quite yet. 2015 is more likely for all of them. Let them develop in the SANFL first.

Also. Don't forget these kids will join Newton, Ah Chee, Shaw, Clurey who are yet to debut.

Highlights are just that - highlights, but there is enough in the video footage of all 4 players for us all to get genuinely excited about I would have thought.

Not immediate impact 2014 excited, but I feel pretty confident that they can all add some quality, or at the very least, hard competition for spots in our team in their own right...and I think it will happen sooner than what some of the "nay sayers" on here believe will be the case.

Jeez Harvey looked a unit...the worst that I saw in his tape was a ruck contest in the forward lines where he didn't get off the ground...but still managed to kick the goal.

Jarman's kicking would be my "negative" from his tape, while I pretty muched loved the run and carry sequences displayed by Amon - he looks like one smooth mover.

DBJ looked like he "exploded" away from several contests and opponents, and while I would again be most (albeit only slightly) concerned with his kicking, his agility and ability to get away from a contest looks to be quality. Break the line, carry, dispose...and hit the target!

I am far from being a great judge of "potential" in players so young, but from the video tape I think my "like" ranking from these 4 draft picks would be Harvey / Amon / DBJ / Impey.

First the upcoming Dubai sandblasting sessions, followed by some Kern and crew spit and polish for them all over the few months after - then it's time to show what they look like under the spotlight...

I hope we are not going to be disappointed...and I don't think we will be.

Welcome to the Club boys...

If Impey is fit, he'll get games. I'd expect ~10. The other three probably wont next year you would think. We'll be hoping for Newton to add to our clearance ability next year.
