What I would like to see

FB (Gillies/Brown) Rivers J.Hunt
CHB Enright Lonergan Mackie
C J.Corey Bartel Duncan
HF Johnson Taylor Menzel
FF Varcoe Hawkins Christensen
R Macintosh Selwood Kelly
Int (West/Vardy) Chapman(sub) GHS Caddy

Doubt that will happen because we will want to play both West and Vardy. So Taylor will go back, Rivers to pocket and Vardy at CHF.

Senior player biased 22

B: J.Hunt Lonergan Mackie
HB: Enright Taylor Rivers
C: Duncan Selwood T.Hunt
HF: Johnson Pods Menzel
F: Varcoe Hawkins Chapman
R: McIntosh Kelly Christensen
I: West Bartel Corey Stokes

Vardy, Caddy, Guthrie, Smedts, Stringer, Motlop, Murdoch, GHS.

Decent squad of 30 right there. Balancing it out into a 22 will be the tough part. Can't see any of the other talls getting a run sans injury or the token rotation game against GWS or whoever.

Pre season is going to be brutal for the last 3-4 spots in the side.

Does anyone have Mitch Brown in their best22?

I'd love to say yes, but not right now. That said, I would not mind if they gave him 6-8 games in a row in the seniors (in one position preferably) to see what he's got. West and Lonergan are two who've shown a consistent run of games in the side is more valuable than 1 or 2 here and there.

wow didn't think he was that tall, if he put on a bit of weight and strength he could be moved permanently into the backline, he is only 22 after all, still a lot of improvement left in him.
He weighs 92kg.

Needs to do some upper and lower weights with Kelly, Corey, Selwood and Hawkins over this preseason, and he should be fine.

Just did some reading on his wiki page, says 85kg o_O Either way with a height of 196cm you'd hope he would be pushing 100kg's.

Wikipedia doesn't always get updated, but close enough.

True, could be a Hawkins-type defender if he had the confidence and weight

Pretty much as l would have it. Would swap Vardy for West and also would like Smedts in there for either Corey or Stokes.

No Menzel due injury. Mitch Brown as a winger?

Kersten has to get games - perhaps in place of Pods.

Now that trades are done...

Core team:

B: Enright Lonergan Rivers
HB: Mackie Taylor Guthrie
C: Varcoe Bartel Duncan
HF: Johnson ???????? Christensen
F: ??????? Hawkins ????????
R: McIntosh Kelly Selwood

Fringe (roughhly in order of likelihood of playing)

Back fringe: J Hunt, Bews
Mid fringe: Corey T Hunt Caddy, Stringer, Murdoch, GHS
Fwd fringe: Chapman, Podsiadly, Stokes, Menzel, Smedts, Motlop, Brown,
Ruck fringe: West, Simpson, Vardy

A few others will get a look in too. I can see us playing ~ 36 players for the season.

I see Corey, J Hunt, Chappy, Stokes and Pods as the senior players most likely to come under pressure to keep their spots which is why I have them listed in the fringe. Knowing the character of those players at least a couple will make me look silly for saying that.

The ??????? At CHF and in the pockets are the spots where I see the most scope for fringe players to get a go as I don't think anyone has automatic claims to those positions now that the above senior players are potentially going to slow down some more.

You might want to see your barber for a refund if you have walked away with a back fringe and a mid fringe to go with the more customary forward fringe.

Ba-dum tish!

Seriously though, I think this is a good way to look at it.
I would perhaps replace guthrie with ???? and add him to the back fringe.

Could easily do that. I'm tipping Guthrie for a break-out year though. I think he's a 200-gamer.

Just as a matter of interest (and because I was bored), I decided to go through this thread and make up a "consensus best 22". In the interests of fairness, when two players were named in a position (ie. x/y), I picked the first named player. Also, for catempire's team above which had a few gaps missing, I named Chapman, Pods and Stokes as the forwards, and put the two Hunts, Corey and West on the bench to flesh the team out. Some teams named Gillies or another player in the back pocket, so I just added the other name since Gillies has been delisted.

Overall, there were 80 teams listed and 36 different players were named at least once! Interestingly, only 6 players were named in all 80 sides (Christensen, Hawkins, Lonergan, Mackie, Selwood and Taylor), but another 7 players were named in at least 90% of the sides. The "voting" went like this:

80. - Christensen, Hawkins, Lonergan, Mackie, Selwood, Taylor
79. - Duncan, Johnson, Kelly, Varcoe
78. - Bartel, Enright
74. - Chapman
70. - Menzel
69. - Vardy
63. - West
60. - T.Hunt
53. - Guthrie
51. - J.Hunt
49. - Motlop
47. - Smedts
46. - Podsiadly
36. - Caddy
35. - Rivers
34. - McIntosh
27. - Corey, Murdoch
16. - Stokes
13. - Brown
12. - Simpson
9. - Kersten
7. - Horlin-Smith
5. - Stringer
3. - Walker
1. - Bathie, Troy Menzel

Therefore, that leaves the consensus 22 as the following:

B: J.Hunt Lonergan Guthrie
HB: Mackie Taylor Enright
C: Varcoe Kelly Christensen
HF: Johnson Podsiadly Duncan
F: Chapman Hawkins Menzel
Foll: West Selwood Bartel
Int: Vardy T.Hunt Motlop Smedts
Emerg: Caddy Rivers McIntosh

Wow, that's a fair effort!
Hope you didn't have anything more important to do - in real life, that is ;)

Yes, winty, but how many of the teams were named before and after Caddy/Rivers/McIntosh were confirmed?

Don't know the exact number, but I do know there were some teams who had those players listed before they were officially Cats.
