He is but dogs have 1 less on primary list so can upgrade 1 rookie without a long term injury at the start of year, given how he has been training he would have to be incredibly bad in the nab cup not to start round 1.

This is my team so far, thoughts?

D - B Goddard, B Gibbs, P Hanley, G Broughton, B Goodes, J Pittard (L Stevenson, D Terlich)
M - G Ablett, S Pendlebury, T Cotchin, M Murphy, R O'Keefe, K Mitchell, J O'Meara, N Hrovat (M Jones, J Viney)
R - D Cox, M Leuenberger (D Currie, J Osborn)
F - L Franklin, T Rockliff, S Johnson, J Kennedy, T Banfield, B Staker (J Simpson, T Lee)

As a Collingwood supporter i'll tell you guys that...

- Shaw is probably going to be tagged this year like usual so don't expect him to make scores higher than 110-120.
- Ball will make an impact but i doubt i see him averaging any higher than 90-95.
- Cloke is set for a big year and at 400k he's a good pick up. He was double teamed by the defence all year last year and now that we have 5 people down there that we can genuinely call 'Forwards' expect the pressure to be off. (Cloke/Lynch/Krakouer/Macaffer/Goldsack)
- Grundy is more physically ahead then Witts and is more likely to get a game providing his groin injury clears up over the pre-season.

This is where the party is at lads:

Backs: Goddard, Waters, Grimes, Yarran, Plowman, Vlastuin (Docherty, Colquhoun)

Mids: Ablett, Pendles, Dangerfield, Cotchin, Toumpas, Wines, O'Meara, Crouch (Vieny, T.Mitchell)

Rucks: NicNat, Luen (Daw, Grundy)

Fwds: Franklin, Bartel, Rockliff, Sylvia, Varcoe, Stringer (T.Menzel, Lee)

DDAMMMMMNNNNNNNNN

Pretty sure the Dogs still have one spot left on their senior list so like any other rookie if he proves himself over the preseason and NAB then he can still play RD1.

* yeah, what StringyDog said. Like the sound of that from a Dogs supporter.

Buckley uses Shaw in a more proactive role however when he's tagged. Under Malthouse, Shaw would be left in the backline regardless of his production, Buckley (and to be fair Malthouse in his last season) would play Shaw further up the ground on a wing to either lose his tagger or to take his tagger up the ground with him which would allow their backline to play a loose man with the extra player up there. I don't think it's an issue with him anymore.

For all people who are making teams with any mid-pricers (such as players who are returning from injury or kids on the rise), a good tip is to look at the top 10 for each position and ask yourself if that player will be in that top 10, or at least close to it by the end of the year. If the answer is no, then you seriously need to think about getting rid of them.

Whilst it sounds mighty appealing to pick up a cheap player like Moloney or Varcoe as they will almost certainly improve for you, they will never reach that top 10 scoring average, so will either need to be traded, or will be taking up space in your team. You can always afford to maybe keep one of these types of players per line, however only if they're not far off from the leaders. The point of these types of players is to get them cheap and keep them all year. If that isn't looking like that's going to happen, then they're only going to be useful as a cash-cow, and they won't be very good at that since they will only rise by approx $150k maximum, whereas rookies can rise by up to $350k.
Varcoe will be a gun

Better midfield rookies than Menzel in the middle,

and worse forward rookies than him in your team imo, so wuld move him forward mate

This is an excellent post and why guns n rookies is still the way to go imo.

I've gone from this:

What do you guys think of this. VERY rough at this stage, will refine it tomorrow.

Backs: Goddard, Broughton, Atley, Ellis, Bock, Plowman
INT: Colquhoun, Vlastuin

Mids: Ablett, Cotchin, S. Johnson, Moloney, Ball, Embley, D. Martin, O'Meara
INT: Crouch, Viney

Ruck: Roughead, Goldstein
INT: Leuenberger, Grundy

Forward: Pavlich, J. Riewoldt, M. LeCras, J. Kennedy, T. Varcoe, T. Lee
INT: T. Menzel, S. Kerridge

To this after some refinement. Backs and Ruck are still the same though.:

Backs: Goddard, Broughton, Atley, Ellis, Bock, Plowman
INT: Colquhoun, Vlastuin

Mids: Ablett, Cotchin, D. Martin, Mzungu, Monfries, Viney, O'Meara, Crouch
INT: Hrovat, Mitchell

Ruck: Roughead, Goldstein
INT: Leuenberger, Grundy

Forward: Pavlich, Riewoldt, Franklin, J. Kennedy, S. Johnson, T. Lee
INT: T. Menzel, S. Kerridge.

What do you guys think?

I'm also a little stunned not many people are selecting Josh Kennedy in their forwards. At $299,600 he is a bargain.

What about competition from Austin and Jong?

What about competition from Austin and Jong?

Jong had plenty ahead of him last year and we got Stevens and Lower that would also be ahead of him now, he might be a future player but won't be upgraded prior to season, Austin is a slight chance if a couple of Roughead/Morris/Markovic/Talia get injurred in NAB cup as dogs are a bit thin down back. Rob Murphy is playing forward this year so Goodes is a key part of that move having someone skilled on backline to fill that role.

Not bad mate, strong side overall although I would trade out one of Grimes or Heppel for a top 5 prem.

This is my first go at it $31k left in the kitty:

B: Goddard - Gibbs - Birchall - Hanley - Staker - Pittard (Coloquan, Docherty)

M: Ablett - Pendlebury - Mitchell - Cotchin - Fyfe - Wines - Viney - Crouch (O'meara, Hrovat)

R: Goldstein - Leunberger (Daw, Grundy)

F: Franklin - Rockliff - Lewis - Martin - Stringer - Macaffer (Lee, Simpson)

THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS WOULD BE GREAT GUY'S!! :)

Very strong side, balanced side for mine. A slight tweaking of the rookies after the nab cup and possibly POD in the ruck might have you a winner.

A very solid looking team some conflicting reports about Daw being injured so might pay to keep an eye on him but other than that looks to be a great base to build from
